Does anyone actually work 9-5?

Just that really. I was thinking and none of my friends/family do so I wondered how common it actually is/isn’t.

I’m a teacher so well known to not be 9-5 my day officially starts at 8.35 and ends at 5 so I’m in school 8-6 most days. Husband is an engineer/project manager so works long hours plus a commute (often away overnight as well).

Do you work the classic 9 to 5?

I do a 35 hour week in theory.
So yes in theory and almost always in practice.

ChronicallyOnLime · 08/03/2025 07:20

I did, I worked from home. Phone lines opened at 9am, and shut off at 5pm. We were never expected or asked to work overtime because it didn’t really exist.

now I work 10 hours a week 😂 much better

Amilliondreamsisallitagonnatake · 08/03/2025 07:21

Yes my partner does. Sometimes isn’t finished bang on 5 but it’s 5.10 or so rarely late

TokyoSushi · 08/03/2025 07:23

Yes, mostly! I WFH full time in a great little flexible company, we work 9-5.

I do have to travel, mostly in the UK & Europe for meeting & events a couple of times per month, but if you're not traveling, then 9-5.

Myengagementring · 08/03/2025 07:23

I work 8-4.45 Mon to Thur (condensed hours) and 8-12 on a Friday so almost. I love doing the longer days so I get a Friday afternoon off.

biscuitsandbooks · 08/03/2025 07:23

No, and I don't know anyone who does either. It's mostly shift work around here.

I'm self employed and work approx. 8.30am-2pm. DH is the same though starts and finishes a little later.

Creamsnackered · 08/03/2025 07:26

I've only done it when temping in office jobs whilst at uni - NHS admin, receptionist in various offices, that sort of thing.

Emeraldsrock · 08/03/2025 07:28

8:30-5. NHS standard is 37.5 hours.

MyIvyGrows · 08/03/2025 07:29

Mostly, unless it’s a one-off evening event or an emergency. I’m not expected to be available before about 8.30 or longafter 5, although I do catch up with work in the evenings sometimes if I’ve been travelling or something.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 08/03/2025 07:30

I do, well it's 8.30 to 4.30 but that's it. need o/t couple times a year at defined times. My kids mainly work these hours too - all office based or hybrid. Dh does shift work, has done all his working life.

SapphireOpal · 08/03/2025 07:32

Lots of my colleagues do. Civil service. We work a 37 hour week so 7h24 per day - so to do 9-5 you'd need to only take half hour lunch, but lots of people do.

HelenWheels · 08/03/2025 07:34

i changed to 8.30 to 4.30 a year ago, gives me more daylight to drive home

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 08/03/2025 07:59

Dolly Parton?

I'm 8-4 with an early finish on Friday (35 hour week)

Sallysoup · 08/03/2025 08:04

I've never had an office job that starts as late as 9. Current office is open from 7. Can technically start up to 9.30 and work till 6 but most people start between 7.30-8 to finish as early as possible.

BloodyHellBob · 08/03/2025 08:07

I work 9-5 but mostly from home. I'm very fortunate in that my employer is quite flexible so if I need away early I can either make up the time or start a bit earlier. However in most of my career I've worked fully flexible hours and rarely worked 9-5.

WhereAreWeNow · 08/03/2025 08:09

My job is flexible. If I'm in the office I usually work 8.15 to 4.30ish.

Playmobil4Eva · 08/03/2025 08:12

I’m a teacher and try to work at school as much possible as I can. My week normally looks like this:
Monday 7-4
Tuesday 7-4:45
Wednesday 7:30-4:45
Thursday 7:30-5:40
Friday 7:30-4:00
Saturday 9-12 (at home)

HoldingThePoisonDown · 08/03/2025 08:14

Nope 8-6.

taxguru · 08/03/2025 08:15

More or less I’ve always worked 9-5 or thereabouts. I’ve always worked in jobs where clients have a reasonable expectation of you being available during normal office hours, and likewise other professionals such as bank officials, tax inspectors, solicitors, estate agents, surveyors, etc. Fair enough for slight flexing ie starting and finishing +/- an hour or so. These days it’s really annoying and massively slows things down and wastes time when people are part time working random hours thus holding up tasks and projects as you don’t know when you can catch them. Especially the Friday afternoon virtual shutdown where barely anyone is working.

HorrorFan81 · 08/03/2025 08:18

Im 8-4 Monday to Thursday, 9-3 on a Friday. 35 hour week

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 08/03/2025 08:21

I work shifts, including nights.

Friends & family work part-time or full-time during the day or evening, mostly in the service industries, or education. I don't know anyone who works 9-5.

Axalotllittle · 08/03/2025 08:24

Also a teacher here but for an independent semh school. We have contracted hours which we aren't really allowed to flex - 8.30 till 4.30. We really are encouraged not to stay later and we generally don't

ohtowinthelottery · 08/03/2025 08:29

My DS does 8.45 - 5.00 M-Th then 8.45 - 4 on a Friday so not far off 9-5

Oblomov25 · 08/03/2025 08:33

8.30 - 4, 4 days. I like that.

BrownPapery · 08/03/2025 08:36

Civil service- contractual hours are 9.30-5.30 but most of us do at least 2 hours a day more than that. 8.30-6.30 is the norm for me.
