Does anyone actually work 9-5?

Just that really. I was thinking and none of my friends/family do so I wondered how common it actually is/isn’t.

I’m a teacher so well known to not be 9-5 my day officially starts at 8.35 and ends at 5 so I’m in school 8-6 most days. Husband is an engineer/project manager so works long hours plus a commute (often away overnight as well).

Do you work the classic 9 to 5?

Full time is defined as 35 hours a week plus, generally in the UK @SweatOverdose

9-5 with 30 mins for lunch is 37.5 hours so certainly full time.

Girasoli · 08/03/2025 17:02

I do - either 9-5.30 (with an hour for lunch) or I take a short lunch and finish at 5. I do 4 days a week.

Natsku · 08/03/2025 17:08

I do 8-4 mon-fri but I sometimes work over time, especially lately as I wanted a couple of days off so did 7-5 for two weeks to get TOIL.

Natsku · 08/03/2025 17:09

That's with 3 breaks, of about 20-30 minutes each.

Irisilume · 08/03/2025 17:27

Yes, I work in marketing 9-5. It's hybrid so on three days a week I have a 20 minute commute. I will very very rarely stay a few minutes late if I need to take a call or finish something urgent but other than that I'm out of there at 5 sharp.

11Turtle · 08/03/2025 17:43

I'm 7-3:30pm for work but up at 5 am everyday and in bed it has been seeming lately at 1am.

Zuve · 08/03/2025 17:49

Superstore 8am to 6 20

Loloj · 08/03/2025 17:53

I work 9-5:30 Mon-Thurs with half an hour for lunch. Fridays and weekends off- love it. I would prefer to finish at 5pm or earlier but can’t complain.

CeeJay81 · 08/03/2025 17:59

Nope but work in a supermarket, so my shifts can be anywhere from 6am to 10pm Mon to Friday and from 7am to 4pm on Sun.

No, and I don't know anyone who does either. It's mostly shift work around here.

I'm self employed and work approx. 8.30am-2pm. DH is the same though starts and finishes a little later.

How do you pay bills when both of you are hardly working?!

Loveduppenguin · 08/03/2025 20:15

8-4:30 mon- Thurs and 8-3:30 Fri but I have flexi time so I could rock up at 9 if I want. Or when I have my dc I log on 7:00 work til 8:30 and then drop them to school and arrive at 9.
other days I arrive at 7:30 and leave at 4.

FuzzyPenguin · 08/03/2025 20:19

Technically I do, officially I work 9-5 two days a week but I flex them across 3 days so I can do the school run. During the holidays I stick to my 9-5

Yoyooo · 08/03/2025 20:23

I do, I work from home and have two children. I need to take them to school and pick them up from after school club so I rarely work outside my hours.

Jmaho · 08/03/2025 20:39

If I worked full time I'd be 9 to 5 with an hours lunch. I work 26 hours. 9 to 5 2 days with 1hr lunch and 9 to 3 the other 2 days without a break

Emilyjayne9421 · 08/03/2025 20:41

Yep I start at 9.30, 30 min lunch break and leave at 5 on the dot every day. Never have to stay later.

holidayfever2024 · 08/03/2025 20:44

9-5.30 with an hour for lunch (that I rarely take unless it's quiet.)
WFH ( I work hard unlike MN folklore re WFH)
DH works in public sector also 9-5

Family and friends do similar hours.

My Dsis used to do shifts but now does 'office ' hours too.

Not sure it's unusual but of course many sectors are very different

FaithFables · 08/03/2025 20:46

I do 9-6 one week and 8-5 the next. So not quite the classic 9-5 but pretty close.

reluctantbrit · 08/03/2025 20:47

Yes, middle office investment banking.

we do hybrid work, 3 days office, 2 days home.

unless there is an event or I have project work, I shut down at 5pm, together with the majority of the staff.

Sherararara · 08/03/2025 20:52

My DH is a Project Mgr and works exactly
9-5as those are his contracted hours.

ExtraDecluttering · 08/03/2025 20:54

Yes, most people I know do there or thereabouts, salaried professionals, really the only ones who don’t are shift workers such as NHS and police, or hospitality / retail.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 08/03/2025 20:57

I work shifts and know lots of other people working in retail, hospitality, or healthcare, none of whom work anything like 9-5. The people I know with office jobs tend to have some flexibility and often work from home at least some days.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 08/03/2025 21:02

Pre-teaching, most jobs I had were 9-5, one was 8.30-5 and maybe a couple were 10-6. This was 20 - 25 years ago though. I hate the way the standard seems to be 37.5 hours now. We should be working fewer hours, not more!

At the moment, I guess my standard day is 8-5.30 (sometimes a bit earlier, sometimes a bit later), but nothing at home anymore.

Hexagonsareneverround · 08/03/2025 21:12

Public sector or most quangos - a couple of hours a month. Or none at all of what's contracted and then work late into the night to claim overtime.

Artesia · 08/03/2025 21:30

Nope- honestly can't imagine a 9-5 job. I start anywhere between 7am and 9am depending when first meeting is (lots of work with Aus so regular early calls). Then finish between 6.30 and 8.30pm with odd later calls. On office days I leave the house at about 6.15am and get home about 8-8.30pm

Babycatsmummy · 08/03/2025 21:32

I do 6.30 to 19.00 3 days a week and pick up bank work when I can which ranges!
