Does anyone actually work 9-5?

Just that really. I was thinking and none of my friends/family do so I wondered how common it actually is/isn’t.

I’m a teacher so well known to not be 9-5 my day officially starts at 8.35 and ends at 5 so I’m in school 8-6 most days. Husband is an engineer/project manager so works long hours plus a commute (often away overnight as well).

Do you work the classic 9 to 5?

Local Authority worker in social care. Contracted 830 to 5 with hour lunch. Might work this but if I've stuff to do in the community I may work later to accommodate the other party.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/03/2025 10:34

Yes, worked 34 to 36 hours a week in most of my (office) jobs.

TheBang · 08/03/2025 10:35

I work 8-3 with no lunch break. It’s good because I finish in time to pick the kids up and take them to their activities but although I am technically allowed to eat on the job I don’t always get much opportunity so I can be ravenous by midday and the next hours are a struggle

I thought anything over 6 hours gave you a break of 20 minutes? You may be able to take a break if you want one

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 08/03/2025 10:40

I’m 8 to 4 now so 37.5 hours a week from a once 70 hour week, I bloody love it. I am thinking to change to condensed hours and have a Wednesday off but still work the 37.5, not sure yet

offmynut · 08/03/2025 10:41

I work 6pm to 6am grave yard shift.

TulipTuesday · 08/03/2025 10:45

I do 8:30 - 4:30. I used to do 9 - 5 but our offices moved and 8:30 - 4:30 works better for the train times.
I’ve got flexibility though and sometimes do 8 - 4. Rarely have to work over but if I did I’d get the time back. NHS admin role.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 08/03/2025 10:48

I work 9-5.30 most days but do the school run at 3-3.30 then log back on.

localnotail · 08/03/2025 11:14

My working hours are 9 to 6. 5 days a week! Would love 9 o 5 ))

Snorlaxo · 08/03/2025 11:19

I’d imagine that people paid by the hour rather than salaried would work fixed hours like that. For example an old job of mine was 8-4 with maybe 10 minutes tops on each side.

PuppyMonkey · 08/03/2025 11:30

No, but I do work 9-4 if that counts. Leave at 4 on the dot and never do work outside those hours and don’t check work emails at home and don’t really even think about work until I’m next back in the office.

This is what I want from a job these days tbh. Pay is not all that great but it’s a five minute drive away, interesting work, nice people and doesn’t stress me out like my former career did (local newspaper journalist).

Owlteapot · 08/03/2025 11:33

8.45 -5.15. Mostly from home, go to office maybe monthly

Cushionseams · 08/03/2025 11:36

I work all manner of weird shifts but never a 9-5. Love being able to get things done during the week.

Apart from training - am on 8-4 this week for training and dreading the commute.

Allatonce2024 · 08/03/2025 11:37

I do 9-5.30 and finish earlier on Friday

I tried doing 37 hours in 4 days as condensed hours but my work is entirely screen-based so I found my eyes were just too tired to focus after 8 hours staring at the screen

SwanOfThoseThings · 08/03/2025 11:37

Those are my official hours, in practice I start at 8:30 to be ready for 9am meetings, and my finish time will vary, sometimes I can finish at 5, sometimes much later.

I tend to do closer to 9-5 when I am in the office than when I'm at home, as I don't want to travel home later than 5 and once I have packed up and put everything away it's easier to think 'I'll leave X till tomorrow morning'.

angelspike · 08/03/2025 11:37

Nope, 8-4.30 or 9-5.30

Ladamesansmerci · 08/03/2025 11:41

Yes! I'm a community mental health nurse. I never open my laptop before 9, and almost always shut it at 5. I also make a conscious effort to take a lunch break.

I used to work for 2-3 hours after work doing paperwork and worked through lunch, but now I refuse to. It's easy in my job to fall into the trap of staying on doing paperwork and skipping lunch, but I refuse. The only time I'll stay on now is if it's to do with risk/safeguarding, or if I'm sat with a patient in crisis.

MyCatNamedCookingFat · 08/03/2025 11:54

I am 9-5, it's very rigid and I work with clock watcher seniors who'll sniff if I walk in the door at 9 am as I'm technically late as I'm not already sat at my desk.

But ignored the fact that I'm extremely hard working, and would stay to finish a task that required before going on leave.

It's also a bit soul destroying for that reason. And I no longer want to be flexible as I don't get it back. So I'm 9-5 on the dot!!

clary · 08/03/2025 11:56

I used to have 9-5 hours tho as a rule I was in earlier than 9am.

I now work 9-5.30 as I have an hour for lunch and I am rarely in earlier than about 855 and usually leave by 5.45, sometimes at 5.30, so yes, pretty much stick to my hours. That’s fine.

I used to teach in school so I know all about working all the hours there are.

SweatOverdose · 08/03/2025 12:00

Yes, a couple of people I know who work 0.9FTE and have children so spread it over 5 days rather than one afternoon off. Why do people say 9-5 anyway? It's not full time is it! Or did it used to be? Full time is 42.5 hours/week and always has been where I've worked.

EndorsingPRActice · 08/03/2025 12:03

I could work 9-5 but find it better for me to flex my hours quite a bit. So I’ll start really early when I wake and then take a long lunch break and so shopping/ swimming / for a walk. I frequently work late to meet deadlines.

ScabbyHorse · 08/03/2025 12:08

I work 9-5 Monday to Thursday

Pedallleur · 08/03/2025 13:13

Where I work some people don't work. Just walk around chatting and having meetings. We have a manager who in 2 years hasn't spoken to us and seemingly refuses to. Just passes on the idea of the week and passes the buck or claims ignorance if he has to

OhamIreally · 08/03/2025 13:19

Yes I have for the last year. 35 hours a week, six weeks holiday, 10 days support leave to take dependents to appointments. I'm in heaven it's the happiest I've been for years.

MajorCarolDanvers · 08/03/2025 13:26

In theory yes. 35 hour week but start and finish is flexible and we don’t clock in and out.
