Does anyone actually work 9-5?

Just that really. I was thinking and none of my friends/family do so I wondered how common it actually is/isn’t.

I’m a teacher so well known to not be 9-5 my day officially starts at 8.35 and ends at 5 so I’m in school 8-6 most days. Husband is an engineer/project manager so works long hours plus a commute (often away overnight as well).

Do you work the classic 9 to 5?

I haven’t done since my daughter was about 6 - she’s now 33. I went down from 37 hours to 30 hours a week over 4 days, then changed jobs to work 20 hours over 2.5 days.

I usually do 9.30-6 and go to the gym a couple of times a week in work hours. Sometimes I need to finish at 3 or 4 for a kids thing or weekend away. I will work evenings if we’ve got something big on though and I sometimes travel for work. I don’t understand how people can routinely do 50-60 hour weeks, I’d die of exhaustion.

I work 7.30am - 5pm for the NHS.

I remember someone once saying to me that they thought you'd have to earn £50k to work later than their alloted hours.

At the time I was on more than that, and I was working 60 hour weeks. I thought yeah that figures.

I've never done a 9 to 5. I don't even understand the logic of doing that. If I have work to do, I work like a demon till it's done.

Depends on the type of work
Like retail - if the shop shuts at 6pm and everyone leaves, there's no more work to do
My job is to answer the phone. If the phone lines close at 5pm I can't sit there and do work as there is no work

Yep, 9-5 Monday to Thursday.

Yes, a couple of people I know who work 0.9FTE and have children so spread it over 5 days rather than one afternoon off. Why do people say 9-5 anyway? It's not full time is it! Or did it used to be? Full time is 42.5 hours/week and always has been where I've worked.

It literally is full time

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 09/03/2025 23:24

I work 9-5. It's great!

EBearhug · 09/03/2025 23:29

There's no official definition of full time, but it's usually considered to be over 35h a week (which would be 9-5 M-F with an hour for lunch.) It apparently can be 30 hours in some cases, but I've had colleagues in a previous job doing 32h week, PT at 4 days a week. My current FT job is 37.5h week, the one before was 40h week.

Booboobagins · 10/03/2025 00:01

My current contract is 8.30am-4.30pm so same hours as 9-5 and its pretty acceptable to just do those hours.

lilkitten · 13/03/2025 13:03

I've never worked 9-5, but I live in an urban area and the rush hour seems to have moved forward: 4-5 seems to be busy, go out at 6pm and there's no traffic around when I used to not be able to leave my street before 6. I worked shifts in most jobs, then self employed working across 7 days whenever was best for me.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 13/03/2025 13:07

I don't do more than 9-5 or take work home usually. I often do 8-4 by personal preference. Occasionally I do take it home/work in the evening to finish a presentation or "work" late (have some drinks and dinner after the meeting) when attending meetings around the country or overseas. Sole counsel for a small organisation.

I do now, but it’s the first job I’ve had in years where I worked those hours. And even better, there’s no expectation to work early/ late. One of the reasons I took the job!
