Does anyone actually work 9-5?

Just that really. I was thinking and none of my friends/family do so I wondered how common it actually is/isn’t.

I’m a teacher so well known to not be 9-5 my day officially starts at 8.35 and ends at 5 so I’m in school 8-6 most days. Husband is an engineer/project manager so works long hours plus a commute (often away overnight as well).

Do you work the classic 9 to 5?

Core hours are 8-6, so I'm doing 8.45-4.45. Based at head office 4 days a week.

How do you pay bills when both of you are hardly working?!

Not everyone is on minimum wage. Depending on what "self-employed" means in this case, the poster could be coining it in. We don't know. Also, not everyone has the same outgoings- if you've no rent/mortgage or other debts, you simply don't need as much income.

Shock news: everyone's circumstances are different.

Sleepytiredyawn · 09/03/2025 17:44

I did, but I started to start earlier and finish earlier to have more time with my kids in the evening.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 09/03/2025 17:46

I work 8:30 til 4 as a teacher, pick up my toddler, play, bath and bed, then cook dinner , maybe squeeze in a gym class if partner is cooking then I will work from about 8-10:30.

Bellavida99 · 09/03/2025 17:48

Yes I work flexitime so tend to do more like 8-4 but could do 9-5 if I wanted. There is no expectations to work extra hours unpaid and no meetings are scheduled before 9.30 or after 4

namechangeGOT · 09/03/2025 18:07

Both my previous jobs have been 9-5! The one I'm in now (9 years!) is 8.30 - 5pm!

I wouldn't consider shift work. I like to know where I am and when!

asrl78 · 09/03/2025 18:07

Yes when in the London office twice a week. When working at home we start at 7:30 am and finish at the same time.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 09/03/2025 18:22

Another teacher here. I'm at school 8:00 to 4:45, often do a bit after I get home and always do several hours' work on a Sunday. So probably a 50 hour week, not counting commute or parents' evenings (which run 5:00 to 7:30, so I'm in school 8:00 until 7:30).

MyTherapistSaidImAnAdult · 09/03/2025 18:22

I work 40 hours Mon-Fri in the office (8.30 to 5.30) then evening visits and weekends. I'm in the private care sector though and we're always short staffed so I have to cover.

Redlocks30 · 09/03/2025 18:24

Another teacher here. I'm in at 7.30 and generally leave between 5.30/6. Will work in the evenings when needed.

ilovepixie · 09/03/2025 18:25

I'm either 8-4,9-5 or 10-6

Elzibub · 09/03/2025 18:48

I’m meant to do 9-5 with half hour lunch break but usually do 8.30 - 18.00/ 18.30 with no lunch break I work for NHS and am non clinical

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 09/03/2025 19:25

I don't for sure - manager in retail, I do a minimum 39hr week but my shifts can vary between 8-1645, to 1400-2230 with any variety in between depending on what's needed. I work alternate weekends too, so absolutely definitely no 9-5, Monday to Friday here unfortunately.
On the other hand my partner wfh for a local authority and should do 9-5ish, but is generally still online sorting stuff out until 6 or 7ish. It's an annoyance 'cos he's not getting paid for it, and there's no pressure to do it, but he's a big boy and it's his choice. Doesn't really impact on me.

What a way to make a living?!

Yes because I have school age children, one is at primary school so we use wrap around care, and I catch the train in the mornings with my eldest daughter who is at secondary school.

The school day doesn’t really allow for an earlier start. I worked 8am - 4 pm pre children to avoid the rush hour commute, but wrap around care doesn’t start early enough for it now.

babiesinthesnowflakes · 09/03/2025 19:46

Yes I do, but it’s an admin role. In my previous role (which paid a lot more) I was often working 60 hour weeks but decided life was too short for that!

softkitty79 · 09/03/2025 19:47

Not far off, 8-7 days over 4 days per week formally. Which i realise is pretty privileged. Another 8 hours on average over the weekend which is the pay off for the nice weekdays

Beautifulweeds · 09/03/2025 20:05

As a teacher, same as you, full day and commutes, then evening and weekend work, so defo a lot longer. My DH wfh and can be more flexible; sometimes he will little on and can do DIY, whatever he wants, others he will be away and long commutes.

Looking for an office/wfh job, teaching is too much. Xx

LJH001 · 09/03/2025 20:11

I am a TA in a secondary school and I do 8 till 4

anon666 · 09/03/2025 20:37

I remember someone once saying to me that they thought you'd have to earn £50k to work later than their alloted hours.

At the time I was on more than that, and I was working 60 hour weeks. I thought yeah that figures.

I've never done a 9 to 5. I don't even understand the logic of doing that. If I have work to do, I work like a demon till it's done.

Vettrianofan · 09/03/2025 20:44

Gettingbysomehow · 08/03/2025 08:55

Yes I do, I work 9 to 5 with weekends and bank holidays off and almost 8 weeks annual leave a year. I'm an NHS podiatrist. I chose the job for the hours and the generous annual leave.
When I was a nurse I had no social life because of the awful hours I worked. Work life balance is incredibly important.

Or to flip it on it's head, working 9 til 5 is very rigid as a working pattern with no flexibility?

DH works office hours a mix of 7am til 3.30pm and 7 til 5, to get a Friday off.

Gardengirl108 · 09/03/2025 21:00

No, I work condensed hours, 31 hours one week, 39 the next - 8.30-17.15 (17.30 on the Monday), and every other Monday is a non-working day. I work from home, going into the office once a month. I often do extra hours when I need to (no overtime) but generally doesn’t bother me as I have flexibility during the working week. 28 days hols a year and opportunity to buy up to 5 more. We have flexible bank holidays so can use those hours at any time during the year - I choose to take them on the actual UK bank holidays.

Emanresu52 · 09/03/2025 21:09

0800 - 1630 Mon to Fri. Have done shifts and weekends and Christmas days in previous jobs so this is bliss. Suffice to say it the ONLY good thing about my job :(

catlover123456789 · 09/03/2025 21:12

I suppose my job would be described as 9-5 but in practice my hours are all over the place based on meetings, deadlines etc.

BearSoFair · 09/03/2025 21:14

I do 6-13 including one weekend day, but DH does 9-18 M-F so he's close!
