Does everyone pay £90 a year for this?

For Microsoft office package?

I've just got a new laptop for work things, I'm self employed. I can't remember what I did for my desktop.

I can't really do anything on it unless I pay but it's not really a bill I ever see people talk about, along with McAfee for viruses, it's getting to be really expensive.

Isnt that something you write off as a business expense anyway?

MotherWol · 07/03/2025 18:37

This thread's come at the perfect time for me - I'm changing jobs and will need a version of office on my personal laptop. I currently work in a university and use Office 365, but I'm assuming I'll lose access to that when I no longer have access to work systems. Are the ones on Wowcher etc legit? I don't mind paying for a one-off download but really don't want to have a subscription just so I can edit my CV and update my budget spreadsheet!

ClassicalQueen · 07/03/2025 18:44

My work has office 365 so I just log into my work account, not ideal but saves me £90. I have previously used LibreOffice which is pretty good and it's free.

They have automatically updated to the one with AI. Click to bit auto renew and you'll get the option to do the basic one at £60.

I second others, Libra Office is as good. But I'd always save the documents in a windows word file so it can be opened by different programs.

Is McAfee in any way connected to the endless scam email bombardment - not just 'keenly' advertising it but basically scaring and threatening you if you don't get it?

I've had so many 'warnings' about how dangerous it will be if I don't 'renew' my 'expired' protection, when I've never bought their product; and never ever would considering they market it in a scammy way (or are powerless to stop scammers from assuming their identity in that way).

If you uninstall McAfee (it's total junk), it should stop the endless threats and demands. It won't go willingly, but it can be done.

I bought MS Office as a one off payment and use the MS protection. No additional cost and it works just fine.

I pay £1.99 a month to Microsoft for basic office (excel/word etc) which is Office 365, and it allows me bigger one drive storage also. I have had this a long time and suspect it’s probably more now? I’ve never had a rise in the price for a few years now.

TheCatterall · 07/03/2025 19:18

@FrannyScraps kinda. I use google workspace though so pay per inbox I set up (I run two businesses and a hobby from one inbox - 3 domains and 8 email addresses) and pay about £6 a month which gets me the full Google office suite of programs.

if I wasn’t using Google I guess I’d pay annually for Microsoft or buy a one off licence.

Conanno · 07/03/2025 19:29

Was thinking of this thread today when I was considering lobbing my computer out the window because yet again adobe decided to crap out. 57 a month as I have the all apps package 😭

zigzagtriangle · 07/03/2025 19:30

If you log into your account and click to cancel, it might offer you a better deal - I was offered a couple of free months, & lower price without AI. Worth a try.

What do people prefer Microsoft Office for over the free Google docs? I don't know anyone that pays for Microsoft so v intrigued to see why so many do

I do. With large documents google just can't cope. Trying to write a novel on it is next to impossible.

JustMeAndTheFish · 07/03/2025 19:55

No I use Libre Office which, as in the name, is free. And is compatible with MS Office.

Theseventhmagpie · 07/03/2025 20:02

I’ve got this bill this week and been mulling it over. It does seem high but I’m a complete Luddite and think I need it for security??

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 07/03/2025 20:37

Mine is only £79 for family package ( on several computers)

SSD1975 · 07/03/2025 21:34

I’ve recently decided to see if I can save the £90 and learn to use google docs. Took a little gwtting used to, but a mobth in I still havent had tve need for windows.

ThingsPeopleDo · 07/03/2025 22:33

Have a look at WPS Office and Libre Office.

Don't forget you can claim the cost back on your tax return !!!

No you can’t. You can deduct it from the amount on which you have to pay tax.

NotVeryFunny · 07/03/2025 23:21

I use libreoffice too. Which is free.

Ticktockk · 08/03/2025 06:27

To everyone paying so much for adobe, every year on prime day and Black Friday Amazon do a huge discount on the annual adobe package. I haven’t paid full price in years. £70 for the creative package.

DinoLil · 08/03/2025 07:51

I use Open Office. It's free.

SporadicMincePieMuncher · 10/03/2025 08:17

Thank you to the person (or people) who mentioned Groupon for £15 lifetime MS Office. I've downgraded to the £1.99 subscription because I still need the cloud, bringing my total spend for the next 12 months down to around £40 and £24 a year going forwards rather than the £100 ish I would have been paying every year had I not seen this thread and the MSE one.

lilkitten · 11/03/2025 16:59

I use OpenOffice, and I can save it as Microsoft files to send to others. I had a work laptop for a second job I was doing, I had MS Office on that, couldn't notice any great difference that would make it worth paying for

MaroonedinWales · 18/03/2025 08:59

I haven't used Microsoft for 20 years. LibreOffice is free, updates are regular and reliable. I can't understand why anyone would not do the same. If you download Libreoffice you can try using both for a while, existing MS files can be converted whilst maintaining original format copy.

ArabellaScott · 18/03/2025 09:38

Thanks for all the recs for LibreOffice, looking into that now!

YourAzureEagle · 06/03/2025 19:43

They have changed how it works, if you have an old machine with it on, no problems, but now instead of that you have to purchase annual licences if you buy a new machine or new software.

Edited

I think this is what happened to me. I bought a new laptop, and Onedrive perked up. It seemed a good idea to backup everything to the cloud, so I did. They then start harassing me about having to pay for extra storage. In any case, I stored my most important docs on a USB drive. To avoid paying for extra cloud storage, I took back some files for local storage on my laptop. Now I find that, despite this, all my files have been sucked up into Onedrive, including from the USB, and they're either corrupted, erased, or I can't find them. Onedrive dribbles a few through to me occasionally (that's what it feels like, anyway) but essentially I've lost a lot of files. I'm not even sure that paying them will give me access to files I seem to have lost. Luckily my files are all personal, not work-related.
