For Microsoft office package?

I've just got a new laptop for work things, I'm self employed. I can't remember what I did for my desktop.

I can't really do anything on it unless I pay but it's not really a bill I ever see people talk about, along with McAfee for viruses, it's getting to be really expensive.

I haven't been pushed into a subscription yet. You can still buy MS Office with a one off payment.

I get Microsoft through work, although it is my personal laptop.
If you are with Plusnet, as one of the Plusnet perks you can get 2 years of Norton antivirus for up to 7 devices!

unsync · 06/03/2025 17:34

I do, but I use it cross platform and like having the Tb of storage.

DisforDarkChocolate · 06/03/2025 17:43

Yup, I'm happy with what I get.

WibblyWobblyLane · 06/03/2025 17:55

No, dd signed into one drive on my laptop with her school email and ever since we've had free Microsoft office, I just need to be careful as when I save it automatically wants to save it to her one drive.

strewt · 06/03/2025 17:56

I use google docs. Free with my chrome book. It's a rip off of office which works for me!

MarketSt · 06/03/2025 17:59

No but I can use my work login for my home devices.

And DC can use their school ones.

PenniesButton · 06/03/2025 17:59

I LOVE my MacBook but hate Pages/Numbers etc. I miss Microsoft but I'm not willing to pay!

So I use Google sheets and docs instead, and when I download them I convert them to PDFs before I send them to anyone

KnewYearKnewMe · 06/03/2025 18:00

I also pay around £19 for Adobe,

I really resent it but I do have to periodically edit PDFs and haven't found a way around it?

Please tell me if you know a way!

Give PDF24 a go, see if that does what you want.

Grey market codes, for one off purchases are the way forward. Don't pay Microsoft directly.
Or buy Office 2019 from Microsoft.

Search Google for CJS CD Keys or Software Shop

Frazzled2108 · 06/03/2025 18:12

Yes I pay this

Maddy70 · 06/03/2025 18:13

I refuse to pay so I use docs on Google drive

SoundedCat · 06/03/2025 18:20

I have a Linux operating system instead of Windows, which viruses don't tend to be written for, and use LibreOffice. Both are free. Also use Gimp instead of photoshop (free as well)

I remember buying Microsoft Office 2007 through a home use work program for £30. It is still what I'm using on my very old Windows 7 laptop. Hoping when I upgrade the laptop I can still use my Office 2007 disc in install it?!

Bill Gates was interviewed once and said that in his opinion when you bought a Microsoft product it ought to basically work on future versions of Windows, and that they would try to make sure that it did, or at least not deliberately break it.

I still use Office 2003 from a CD that accidentally found its way home with me when I left a previous employer. It works almost perfectly on Windows 10. There is one tiny issue when opening some Word 2007+ files whereby a few spaces get lost, but in that case I just upload the file to Google Docs and download it again. Ditto with occasional conversions of big Excel files.

My CD is long gone, but I copied the whole tree of directories/folders to a USB stick and cloud storage, so I am looking forward to installing it again when I get a new laptop with Windows 11 in perhaps a year or so.

LillyPJ · 06/03/2025 18:23

There are other free programs that perform the same functions. And if you've paid for Microsoft Word/Excel etc in the past, you can still use those without paying more.

museumum · 06/03/2025 18:23

I do (I’m a freelancer) but a lot of people I know use Google instead.

IHadaMarvelousTimeRuiningEverything · 06/03/2025 18:29

I just had a reminder come through about my Microsoft 365 renewal which is £30 per annum. I think it's for storage but I have no idea what I'm even paying for.

category12 · 06/03/2025 18:30

Yeah, bin Macafee, expensive and not good. You can get free / cheaper antivirus that's better. Heck, Windows Defender is as good as anything.

LovingHare · 06/03/2025 18:30

Open office for me, and avast for free antivirus and opera for browser

ThePeppyMoose · 06/03/2025 18:35

Buy a Mac, all the office stuff is free and built in and you never need to worry about viruses. And it does not make you want to throw it out the window.

Rockfordpeach · 06/03/2025 18:44

I was paying 5.99 a month. Currently get it free whilst doing my degree with the open university and get it for a few years afterwards too which is a nice bonus

DoAWheelie · 06/03/2025 18:46

Stop paying for anti virus as the free ones are better. There are free versions of most office programs too. I've not had office for well over 15 years now and I've been able to do everything I needed without them.

GretchenWienersHair · 06/03/2025 18:47

I use the online version of Word for free. It’s not as user-friendly and doesn’t have all of the features but it does the job.

Silvers11 · 06/03/2025 18:50

Absolutely Not. I used Office 2010 for years before I upgraded it - and currently using Office 2019, which I made a one-off payment for. But as others have said, there are other packages out there which are free and are compatible with word and excel.
