Does everyone pay £90 a year for this?

For Microsoft office package?

I've just got a new laptop for work things, I'm self employed. I can't remember what I did for my desktop.

I can't really do anything on it unless I pay but it's not really a bill I ever see people talk about, along with McAfee for viruses, it's getting to be really expensive.

OP posts:

My husband got it recently on groupon much cheaper hope this helps x

Tangled123 · 06/03/2025 16:42

I don’t pay for it. I rarely need Microsoft office now, but when I do, I can just use a work computer.

brawhen · 06/03/2025 16:43

Your license will cover multiple devices (5 usually). If you are licensed on your desktop, sign in with the same account on your laptop to install a licensed copy.

Yes I pay monthly licensing for all my employees. Don't know why you would expect it to be free?

Bramblecrumb · 06/03/2025 16:43

What do people prefer Microsoft Office for over the free Google docs? I don't know anyone that pays for Microsoft so v intrigued to see why so many do

Bin McAfee. Junk.

AVG free has kept me safe for many years.

Second this. In fact it detected and blocked an incoming virus from my employer, who used McAfee (the big professional one).

CalicoPusscat · 06/03/2025 16:47

£40 personal use code can be used on 5 devices

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 06/03/2025 16:50

If you know someone who works in an office, particularly the local council, they usually get a discount to get office for about £10 for lifetime usage. It can be gifted to friends and family.

It might be more expensive now but maybe you might know someone? x

Same applies for those who work at a University.

I use a Chromebook and Google docs. No need for Microsoft or anti-virus software. But tbf I don't have to do anything fancy for my work.

@SchoolDilemma17 I think being self-employed and claiming the expense on a tax return only saves you 20% of the price. If you hadn't bought the product you would have had the other 80% in take home profit. Can any accountants confirm?

thegirlwithemousyhair · 06/03/2025 16:55

McAfee is crap imho. I use Norton which is great and I re-purchase every Jan for less than £15 from Argos. Covers 3 devices and never had a problem yet. Any more than three devices costs more obvs but not much. £90?? Good Lord no. A total rip off.

I think for excel over sheets? That’s poss main reason. I have to use both for different clients :0(

AngelicKaty · 06/03/2025 16:56

@FrannyScraps I refuse to pay for MS Office OP. I use Apache OpenOffice instead which is free and replicates MS Office and is totally compatible with it. 😃

Agree about McAff - got a virus which totally trashed my laptop many years ago. They also had the cheek to dip their hand in my bank account and renew my subscription without even asking me. I read them the riot act.

You could use Apache OpenOffice which is a suite of free software and is totally compatible with MS Office (so you can open spreadsheets created in MS Office and edit them in AOO).

SnoozingFox · 06/03/2025 17:02

No, I bought a download copy of Office on Amazon, think it was about £50 as a one off fee.

JustMyView13 · 06/03/2025 17:09

I did in year one. But google docs / sheets etc is free. So I’m migrating my life across, slowly.

Cucy · 06/03/2025 17:10

I could get the online version for free but needed the software on my actually system.

So I pay about £8 a month.

I only need it for a year though and then I can just use the online version/one at work.

I tried doing groupon and things but in the end I had to just get it directly from Microsoft as they would always play up/not work.

tyish · 06/03/2025 17:12

No, I don't really understand because I have a Hotmail account and use excel on it no problem without a licence so haven't felt the need?

Teenybub · 06/03/2025 17:15

I have a work laptop so I’m assuming they pay.

Do students still get it free? Do you have kids with a student email address?

Unicornsandprincesses · 06/03/2025 17:17

I’m self employed too. While there’s loads of software I pay for, Microsoft Office isn’t one of them. I just use Google Sheets and Google Docs instead. But that suits me, it might not suit others.

DivorcedMumOfAdults · 06/03/2025 17:20

This is why I bought a MacBook. Yep they are expensive upfront but everything is included and updated for a minimum (7 years I think) amount of time. Obviously you can get tax relief on the cost as a business expense but that’s only 20 or 40%

ArabellaScott · 06/03/2025 17:20

haufbiskiy · 06/03/2025 16:16

Yes, plus £16 a month for adobe

Adobe drove me up the wall. Recommend Affinity suite as an alternative.

But their software is shit and it's a pain in the arse when everyone else is Microsoft, I use Google suite on my Mac.

gollyimholly · 06/03/2025 16:17

Worse. I pay £5.99 a month. You've just reminded I have this payment going out of two accounts and need to figure it out.

How is £5.99 a month worse than £90 a year ?
