Does everyone pay £90 a year for this?

For Microsoft office package?

I've just got a new laptop for work things, I'm self employed. I can't remember what I did for my desktop.

I can't really do anything on it unless I pay but it's not really a bill I ever see people talk about, along with McAfee for viruses, it's getting to be really expensive.

I bought a license from Wowcher for about thirty quid as a one off payment instead of a recurring subscription. I guess it wouldn’t work online if you wanted a cloud based one but if it’s just one for your machine it works great and no further payments needed!

What do people prefer Microsoft Office for over the free Google docs? I don't know anyone that pays for Microsoft so v intrigued to see why so many do

It comes with 1TB of online storage per user, which is useful for backing up photos and documents securely. Also Excel is far superior.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 06/03/2025 18:59

I've got Office through work, so not had to pay for it for a long time.

But you can safely get rid of McAfee and stop paying for it. The antivirus that comes with Windows, Defender, is shit hot these days and generally considered better than McAfee

@P00hsticks @StMarie4me @ManHereSorry

Sorry I wasn't very clear. It isn't £5.99/month that's worse, it's that I am paying it twice out of two accounts that's worse. And this thread has reminded me I need to figure out what I've done/what devices I've subscribed

Ollybob · 06/03/2025 19:03

Microsoft Word is free online via a browser,
Plus there's plenty of other free ones around too.
There's no need to pay now, years ago it different as it was the only way to make a word document.

TheAmusedQuail · 06/03/2025 19:05

I refuse to pay. I use Google docs and if I need a word/pdf/excel doc, I download the Google doc (or PPT etc) and send the downloaded Microsoft format version.

I would pay a one off fee. I'm not paying a monthly subscription. These programs used to come free with PCs/Laptops.

Am I unusual not to know whether my friends pay for Office?

I'm happy to pay as I use it a lot and the free Google stuff is rubbish imo. I think I pay about £50!a year for a family package

UndermyShoeJoe · 06/03/2025 19:08

We got our on eBay as a digital code for around £6. Crazy to pay £90 a year.

biscuitsandbooks · 06/03/2025 19:11

No - I use Google Docs/Sheets for free.

MMAMPWGHAP · 06/03/2025 19:19

No. I buy on Amazon. They give you a code you load to Microsoft account. Is always substantially cheaper. For the multi user Family access Microsoft wanted £109 I think. Code from Amazon was £78 when I bought this week.
For a personal copy Amazon is currently £62.
Next year I’m going to put a CamelCamelCamel alert on it. There are sometimes Black Friday deals too.

TequilaNights · 06/03/2025 19:20

I just cancelled mine after the price increased a couple quid more a month

arethereanyleftatall · 06/03/2025 19:21

What?!? I've never paid for this! I have a laptop at home with excel, word etc on it. Is that what you mean?

CheeryOtter · 06/03/2025 19:23

Have a look on Groupon, they have a lifetime Microsoft Office package currently at £15. I bought one a couple of months ago and had no issues.

TurtleBarnacle · 06/03/2025 19:24

I get MS Office free as I'm a part-time OU student.

biscuitsandbooks · 06/03/2025 19:11

No - I use Google Docs/Sheets for free.

Similarly I use Pages / Numbers that came free with my Mac, they work fine, do everything I want and open MS documents.

They have changed how it works, if you have an old machine with it on, no problems, but now instead of that you have to purchase annual licences if you buy a new machine or new software.

ThePoliteLion · 06/03/2025 19:46

yes, I pay this too.
i actually paid two bills to Microsoft last year owing to an account cock up which I need to sort it out. Do keep an eye open for unexpected invoices from Microsoft.

Yeah that's definitely stolen 😂

I've just locked in at £60 for another year but I might try to swallow my dislike of the google suite (sheets in particular has always been a hangy nightmare to me) and go for free next year, as I can't justify it if they're going to force the price increase.

For those who use the libre suite, is it much different to office?

I pay for this because I am actively job searching and send out my CV and cover letters daily. I change my CV for every application. Would I be able to do this in google docs? (I.e. send out cv/cover letters as attachments and download them into indeed applications?)

Not sure, but you can export as a PDF and attach that, if indeed supports PDFs

enkelt2 · 06/03/2025 20:13

Oh I was just thinking about cancelling! I'm not letting them take my money for the rest of my life. You could just pay one-time for one machine. Or use libreoffice.

I tried Google docs for a while, but didn't find them as good as Microsoft. I would rather pay for something I prefer.

JasmineAllen · 06/03/2025 20:19

Don't forget you can claim the cost back on your tax return !!!

Feelingstrange2 · 06/03/2025 20:22

Yes I pay.

But my son's a software engineer and I'm grateful he gets paid at the end of the month! Albeit, he doesn't work for MS office but someone somewhere is maintaining and improving it.

I would use free open office if I didn't use it sooooo much
