what one-off extravagant purchases do you have ? *not a gloating thread*

A friend of a friend lives in Greece and has recently brought themselves an underwater sea scooter. A top of the range one. They are not well off by any means, but could afford to treat themselves to this. It looks a real smart piece of kit.

It got me thinking, we don't have any one-off extravagant purchases. Not that you have to have any, of course. There has just never been anything we have really wanted, with the exception of a new car. But this thread is not about buying to that level.

*edited to add this is a no judgement thread

Does drum kit count? Was a decent chunk of money for us and it was really just because I wanted it. It does get used plenty.

KhakiShaker · 05/03/2025 15:44

Hot tub. Proper one, not inflatable. Regret it, could’ve spent that money on something better.

afaloren · 05/03/2025 15:46

DH has a piano, that’s probably it.

SingingSands · 05/03/2025 15:47

Electric piano, which we bought during lockdown. One off splurge and only seemingly played fucking once by the child who begged for it...

I refuse to get rid of it, sadly convincing myself that one day I'll learn to play it myself!

Mumofyellows · 05/03/2025 15:48

Horse 😂

PersephonesPomegranate · 05/03/2025 15:50

Very fancy holiday for my friends big birthday. Booking a holiday just for me and not taking husband & kids would be a splurge never mind the 5 star, adults only, prestige guest blah blah thing we have opted for. Definitely not something I'll be repeating any time soon.

TigerRag · 05/03/2025 15:51

Probably my laptop

goodgodthereyouare · 05/03/2025 15:51

Hot tub

Oh no don't say that, we are just about to make that rather ridiculous extravagant purchase! Why didn't it work out, don't you use it? Or is it just a massive pain to deal with?

Scottishskifun · 05/03/2025 15:53

We have a campervan I mean its a very old second hand one and we can't drive it a lot of places now due to LEZ but it's still a luxury. We use it a lot from Easter til October on camping trips with the kids.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 05/03/2025 15:58

Books from the Folio Society. I bought 12 books / sets in the last year, so have spent around £1000 on pretty books.

whirlyhead · 05/03/2025 16:00

An Aston Martin. Don’t have it anymore but it did keep its value well!

user1471548941 · 05/03/2025 16:00

Mulberry handbag. I promised myself one for a promotion that took 5 years work. Ended up buying a house the month before and not reallllly having the money but DH told me I worked for it and to have it anyway.

Still using it every day 3 years in.

Madickenxx · 05/03/2025 16:00

A water rower. It was expensive and I was so so sure I'd use it. I've had it 5 years and it sits in the corner of our living room judging me watching Love is Blind. I would sell it but that means admitting that DH was right and I will not / cannot accept that.

HeadNorth · 05/03/2025 16:05

My gorgeous Arab horse - and his even more expensive saddle!

My neighbours got one last Summer. It was very noisy. I asked them if they could relocate it away from my house, and sadly they used it again 😞

Huckyfell · 05/03/2025 16:06

Robomower... cost £5k ish.

Oldraver · 05/03/2025 16:07

We treated ourselves during lockdown down to. Technics 1210 turntable

In fairness our lady ones were bought in 1984 and 1985

littlemoonspistachio · 05/03/2025 16:10

@LennysRucksack we have a hot tub, not the inflatable kind. I never thought of this as a one-off extravagant purchase LOL.

I would never buy one again:

  1. maintaining the water PH balance can be difficult
  2. I lost interest after about 6 months. I now never go in it except maybe in the summer when it is not too hot. DH & DC go in it a lot.
  3. Our energy costs are £££, You have to keep the water PH balanced and therefore have the heat on in the tub at all times. If you turn the heat off you will lose the PH balance and have to empty and start again as the water will go green and die. Filling from empty takes around 3 hours.
  4. If I had to buy it again, then I would get a large 10 seater sunk in (we have an above ground 6 seater). Our friends have this and it looks like a mini pool.
  5. You need a water hoover for the bits at the bottom of the tub. Not a necessity but something we feel is useful after having the tub for 4 years.
  6. It is beyond cold to get out of it at night in the winter and tip toe to the house dripping wet to then have to strip off all your swim wear in the house at the door or risk soaking wet foot prints all through the house. I LOATHE getting out soaking and going in doors. I only go in it in the summer as I can then dry off in the sun.
  7. The constant supply of chemicals you need. Not necessarily too costly, just something else to have to buy .

> A £10K antique dining set. It's our table and chairs for life and it'll hold it's value but still, £10K 😳

> A £700 pair of patent leather Versace high top trainers with gold buttons. They're really garish and OTT. I love them even though they rub a bit

ExpressCheckout · 05/03/2025 16:13

I've just spent £1159 p.p. on a holiday, this is loads for me and I'm trying not to get buyer's remorse 😅

AlwaysFreezing · 05/03/2025 16:16

Outing, but hey ho. And emperor sized bed. 7ft wide. I freakin love it.

minnienono · 05/03/2025 16:17

My wedding dress, at my age I probably "should" have bought a knee length dress and coat combo according to my mother but I bought a princess dress with a trainGrin

LastTwoBraincellsFightingFor3rdPlace · 05/03/2025 16:17

I spent £1,500 on a custom made oak drop leaf dining table and two matching benches. I couldn’t find anything I liked, so I decided to comission a joiner to create exactly what I wanted.

They’re worth every penny and they’ll last a lifetime 🥰

Also spent £3,000 on a once in a lifetime trip to New York over Christmas.
