Thanks to @JoshLymanSwagger for the thread title.

Trump, Vance and Musk are building a bigly bridge across the Bering Strait...
...and creating a gaping chasm in the Atlantic.

Kind hearts are more than coronets, and simple faith than Norman blood.

BREAKING: By a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court LIFTS its hold on a lower court order compelling the Trump administration to resume nearly $2 billion in foreign aid funding. The funds MUST be disbursed. Roberts and Barrett join the liberals.

Just saw this on Twitter.

https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/5177420-supreme-court-blocks-trump-funding/

The Supreme Court in a 5-4 emergency ruling Wednesday refused to halt a judge’s decision ordering the Trump administration to immediately release nearly $2 billion in foreign aid payments owed under existing contracts.

Edited

This is great news because it shows they are willing to stand up to the administration which in the current climate is no small thing.

Interesting to see what happens next though..

Wasn't Roberts the one that got thanked by Trump last night?

SerendipityJane · 05/03/2025 15:09

The danger here is Trump & Co. probably don't need to do anything now. The GOP (people like MTG) would quite happily lynch (a word I use without reservation) any Supreme Court Justice they can find off their own bat.

Has anyone suggested impeaching them yet ?

Democrats were removed from the chamber last night for daring to protest against Trump, it’s quite frightening.

Did you watch it @IIgotjelly ?. Green was removed after several warnings about conduct . Did you notice not one member of his party supported him?. A certain amount of heckling is expected, but complete disruption isn't. The Democrats did themselves no favour's last night.

What- how are you outraged by the behaviour of political opponents that sat quietly in protest or are you referring to another event that was not covered on the news?

AcrossthePond55 · 05/03/2025 15:25

The SCOTUS decision did not give a date or even a specific order to release the funds. Rather it vacated a stay, said the courts have the right to order the funds released and booted the case back to the lower courts to do just that.

So yes, it was a victory of sorts, but not a complete victory. Certainly not a predictor of future decisions. And once the judge in the lower court rules on and specifically orders a disbursement date, it'll end up right back at SCOTUS. We're not out of the woods yet on how far SCOTUS will allow Scrotus to go in defying the Constitution.

Yes, because the big MAGA crybabies only believe in freedom of speech in one direction. They can't handle interruptions or criticism because their widdle fee fees get hurt.

Go back and watch Biden's 2024 SOTU. I'm assuming the Republican conduct was fine?

Adding - considering that Republicans have done things like refuse a second round of questioning for cabinet nominees and stolen Supreme Court seats, I'm pretty unimpressed by the Dems need to be decorous argument.

Vodkamartini3olives · 05/03/2025 15:27

I'm not outraged at all. I'm generally a Dem leaning voter. Where do you see any outrage in my post?

Vodkamartini3olives · 05/03/2025 15:35

We just lost to TRUMP! If that's not a sign to read the room, then I don't know what is. Optics are important. If you can't show any acknowledgment to the family of a fire fighter that was killed, a recently released hostage or a small boy fighting cancer. That says a lot to the peoples minds you are hoping to change.

LifeExperience · 05/03/2025 15:36

Here's what the American public thinks, taken from last night's CBS News/YouGov poll immediately after the speech:

77% support his plan to cut government waste and spending
77% back his immigration and border policies
76% approve of Trump’s speech
76% approve of removing congressmen who interrupted his speech -
74% say his speech was presidential
73% support his stance on Russia and Ukraine -
68% say it made them feel hopeful and proud -
68% say he has a clear plan to tackle inflation -
68% say he accurately described America’s crime crisis -
63% say he focused on issues they care about

The melodrama indicated by your post over their behaviour made it sound like a repeat of Friday night at the Oval Office, that's why I thought you were referring to something else, another incident!

Viewing from afar, I think that ship has sailed.

SCOTUS have made themselves irrelevant (has anyone told them yet ?). Even if they were to order something, Dear Donald can just pardon any official who refuses to comply from the charges of contempt of court. And that's an official act, so he couldn't be prosecuted for it.

With no political will to enforce the constitution, it's pretty much dead in the water now.

It wasn't my idea to make appointing judges a political process. Americans did that all on their own.

That is different to all Americans.

It's a bit like a Budget speech in the UK. All the plaudits. Then reality kicks in again as people realise there is nothing in it for them. He thinks he won on race and culture wars. But it was cost of living, poverty in short. Which he is not addressing and will come to haunt him.

I think AOC did the shrewd thing just staying away. Don't give energy to his fantasies.

CaveMum · 05/03/2025 16:16

@LifeExperience does it say that it was a poll of those who watched the speech? Statistically people are more likely to watch these things if it is “their side” doing the talking, so there may be an inherent bias in the make up of those polled.

Here's how Donald Trump's 2025 joint address to Congress polled with Americans. A heavily GOP viewership called speech presidential, entertaining.
