But he's gone to Iceland and spent well over £100 which would be fine except he's just bought lots of frozen beige shit. There no fresh fruit, salad or nice cut of meat. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to be mean but he's spent our entire budget and I feel there's nothing for me to eat. I'm trying to lose weight so I've been going to Tesco and getting lots of fresh fruit, fresh meat healthy Greek yoghurt and nice bits for the kids lunches. I feel a bit irritated because it feels such a waste of money.

Don't get me wrong I love a good Iceland haul but I'm a bit miffed that's he's put no thought into it.

Anyway... I'm digging my way out off my chicken nugget quary if you're looking for me lol

Yes this is what happens if my DP does the food shop. Frozen beige shite.
Then a token bag of salad or random vegetable for me except that he doesn't eat veg so he just buys whatever is cheapest and doesn't notice its gone all wet and rank and no longer edible!

Peaceloveandhappiness · 03/03/2025 16:34

Feel for you, had to explain to my DH when he did the shopping that there are other aisles apart from the cakes, biscuits, desserts one. Also, when I am trying to eat healthily - it means just that, not pies etc. Online shopping with me using the app works better 😀.

FrenchandSaunders · 03/03/2025 16:36

DH came home with a pack of 24 guiness cans, a huge slab of cheese and some loo roll the other day .....

I have the opposite problem. I like beige crap but my husbands a chef so he buys healthy stuff and I just want to be a fat pig 🥲

callingyououtmrkitten · 03/03/2025 16:41

Hahahah it's hilarious, my DH is wonderful on so many levels but this has annoyed me so much.

My DH hasn't got the memo either. I'm pre-diabetic and need to cut right back on carbs, sugar, fat and processed meat. If he goes shopping, he will buy cheese & onion quiche, chicken kiev, cod in breadcrumbs, cornish pasties, steak pie, pizza, frozen chips, crumpets, doughnuts, corned beef, sausages, burgers, white bread...
This last week's highlights have been a multipack of Mars bars, lemon drizzle cake and goats cheese.

MaybeIamJealous · 03/03/2025 16:44

DH buys strictly for meals. Yes, we'd had 3 square meals a day, but would never have toothpaste or toilet roll in, and don't get me started on snacks. Anyone with DC, especially teenagers, will know, the snacks are verrrrrry important. And I won't lie, I'm partial to a biscuit or 3 myself. This is why I do a weekly click and collect at the Tesco he passes on his way home from work.

callingyououtmrkitten · 03/03/2025 16:44

@theboffinsarecoming I hear you girl! I'd honestly laugh only I now can't afford to. lol I may start intermittent fasting cause it's looks like I'll be eating nothing lol

JustWalkingTheDogs · 03/03/2025 16:45

Tbh I'd be making sure he ate all the beigh shit, and only buy fruit, veg, salad for one (ie you) to keep the costs down

fourelementary · 03/03/2025 16:45

If a lot of it is frozen- some of next weeks budget can be considered spent on it as it will keep- so buy some fresh stuff to use this week and earmark some of the frozen stuff for next week?

See mine goes snack crazy, but forgets to buy things that everyone likes. One time he went for bread and milk and spent £30 he got carried away down the biscuit aisle and bought every flavour of 'club' biscuit and a range of other nonsense that nobody else eats lol

Ha this is exactly what my DH would do. He's a brilliant husband, does more than his fair share at home (does all the laundry and clearing up) but food falls into my domain. He's just not terribly health conscious and whilst he happily eats the variety of meals I cook, he would also happily live off breaded chicken and chips!

All for equality, but sometimes you have to play people to their strengths!

Starlight7080 · 03/03/2025 16:48

Same here. He will stock the freezer but miss out essentials. Lunches. Fresh food.
And we end up spending more money doing a proper shop.
I like to meal plan for the week . Otherwise we spend loads more money .
I like a couple of easy option dinners for when we have a busy day .
Then a few nice meals with a nice piece of meat lots of veg.
Or easy slow cooker ingredients.

ghqpabks · 03/03/2025 16:48

(Diet conscious might be the better term, he's a regular gym goer so not entirely unhealthy! Probably why he could get away with chicken and chips!)

Butteredtoast55 · 03/03/2025 16:48

My DH manages to get lots of stuff that somehow doesn't go together as a meal....like cauliflower and mushrooms or sausages and pasta. I'm veggie so no thanks! He likes bacon and he likes stir fry but who wants a bacon stir fry? 😁

DelphiniumBlue · 03/03/2025 16:51

Yes, my DH is lovely in many ways, but for someone who did biology and chemistry at A level, he has a very poor understanding of nutrition.
His idea of a balanced meal is sausage with the bacon sarnies!
He often tells me why eating pork pies for lunch is good for him ( fills him till dinner, apparently) and it wouldn't occur to him to think about how to fit in 5 veg/ fruit a day.
On the plus side, he will follow the shopping list rigidly if he does the weekly shop, and although he doesn't really cook, he does eat everything put in front of him with enthusiasm and gratitude!
But I wouldn't trust him to compile the shopping list , or to meal plan effectively.
He is good at comparing prices though!

Yes!!!! This is another classic move of my plonker too lol

I tend to do the main online shop, but every couple of days DH pops into our local supermarket (Waitrose) and spends the equivalent of a half week shop on naice snacks and other things he ‘just fancied’. He has a ridiculous sweet tooth, so his overpriced snacks of choice are biscuits and cakes. Why buy a packet of own brand digestives when you can spend £5 on a borders variety pack 🙄. Drives me round the bend, especially as I’m trying to limit the upf’s in our diet.

TunipTheVegimal24 · 03/03/2025 17:06

Got home last night, after spending the week with family. No meat, no yogurts for the children or milk for the toddler. However, cupboard was bursting with Doritos, Club bars, Creme Egg cakes, Freddos and chocolate wafer bars. In fairness there were bananas, although they're inedibly green.

Bumcake · 03/03/2025 17:06

It’s a bit bonkers going without a list.

Strawpollplease · 03/03/2025 17:06

This is making me smile. My DH does everything, including cooking very well, but the shit he comes back from the shops with. I can see that it’s the sort of thing that might be deemed weaponised incompetence - but he likes shopping and willingly does it - but can’t see past the doughnuts and the crisps 😁

Stumbleine · 03/03/2025 17:10

Mine shops like he's stocking up the harvest festival/a preppers convention. Tins, tins and more bloody tins. And just to keep it exciting the odd bag of lentils and a bag of rice

My husband would come back with sweet, crisp, ice cream pop and a pizza and then moan about there being nothing in for tea

Mugcake · 03/03/2025 17:12

God that's so annoying! Iceland fruit and veg in my experience isn't very good so youve not missed out there! my DP is usually pretty good but doesn't look properly so instead of Sweetcorn he buys tinned potatoes or extra spicy beans instead of normal ones. Insists they "must've been on the wrong shelf" also wouldn't think to buy any fruit at all if I didn't remind him

I don’t think it’s hilarious, I think it’s a bit pathetic tbh
