But he's gone to Iceland and spent well over £100 which would be fine except he's just bought lots of frozen beige shit. There no fresh fruit, salad or nice cut of meat. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to be mean but he's spent our entire budget and I feel there's nothing for me to eat. I'm trying to lose weight so I've been going to Tesco and getting lots of fresh fruit, fresh meat healthy Greek yoghurt and nice bits for the kids lunches. I feel a bit irritated because it feels such a waste of money.

Don't get me wrong I love a good Iceland haul but I'm a bit miffed that's he's put no thought into it.

Anyway... I'm digging my way out off my chicken nugget quary if you're looking for me lol

We shop for ourselves now as I'm vegetarian and he isn't. If I shop for us, I buy meat regardless ofmy preferences, if he does our shopping, I might get a bunch of bananas and a veg yoghurt. Difference is he spends twice as much on his food due to the meat mainly. Youre not alone, I feel your pain.

So many selfish man babies on this thread. Can't believe anyone would saddle themselves with men like this

My DH usually gets similar stuff to me but adds to it with 'just in case' foods by the ton. Things we don't really eat but that will see us through armaggeddon. Tinned fish balls in dill sauce, instant noodles, weird random tins that he thought looked intetesting.

I have to periodically bag it all up and bin it because the pantry gets gridlocked with it.

Why nottake it to a food bank rather than bin it,,, I'd love some of what you're binning, no food banks near me but I cannot be the only poor hungry person in the uk who'd like something other than boiled rice to eat

My DH manages to get lots of stuff that somehow doesn't go together as a meal....like cauliflower and mushrooms or sausages and pasta. I'm veggie so no thanks! He likes bacon and he likes stir fry but who wants a bacon stir fry? 😁

Mine is brilliant at buying the protein. He'll go for something for dinner cos we've forgotten to plan (or defrost to follow the plan) and he'll come home with a joint of pork. But no thought around what will go with the pork 🤷. There'll be lots of biscuits and chocolate though.

He's good at so many things, but sometimes you just have to play to strengths, and he doesn't have the meal planning one!

This thread makes me laugh so much. I thought it was just my dh.

He pops into lidl on the way home and buys two large pots of yoghurt with about four bags of granola. Weekly food for him - done.

Never anything else.

He's a grazer - doesn't much like food. I think he eats a lunch at work, so hopefully there's a bit more variety going on there.

I've given up.

When we were young ... I had a motorbike. Having discovered the risks of sending DH food shopping, one weekend I said I'd do the food shop and sent him to get a new indicator bulb for my bike. What could go wrong? He came back having traded in my bike for a different one ...

Doing the weekly food shop takes a bit of planning - 7 x breakfasts, 7 x lunches,7 x dinners, along with maybe pet food, nappies, baby formula, loo rolls, dishwasher tablets, detergent, shampoo etc. etc. It's more challenging if some family members have allergies or intolerances or restricted diets due to special needs. And more challenging again if you're working to a budget. But on the other hand, it's not rocket science. I think the men in question mess it up because they don't have to deal with the consequences - the women go out and replace the missing items. If the men had to make ten trips to the shop during the week to replace the items they forgot, you can be sure they would do a better job the next time around.

Popped in to our local Lidl for milk, bread etc with my husband and left with a purchase from the third aisle...an air compressor ! 🤷🏼😂

No judgement required on "man babies" or "saddling ourselves" with our men on this thread thanks! 😁

Oh those middles aisles are so tempting though. We've left with many a gadget from them.

Did you not think to give him a list? Like, get what you like but make sure there’s enough fruit and salad for me to last a week? Like normal couples who communicate?

I can give my DH a list but unless it is absolutely detailed (brand, size etc) he will come back with something vaguely similar. Think Birdseye frozen peas versus canned marrowfat. Or mature farmhouse cheddar vs Danish block mozzarella. It's quicker to do it myself.

I now do a very detailed online shop every week, he just gets to go out to get something for the GC's pudding (custard tarts or profiteroles) which he can deal with.

DH loves Lidl, we've not been in one since we moved four years ago, but there is one opening here in the summer. God knows where we are going to put his middle aisle purchases, we don't have much room.

I sent my XH shopping a very very long time ago when we were very poor to get a frozen chicken and some potatoes. We had £5 to last the week. He came back having spent all of it on a fresh chicken and expensive potatoes. At the time it should have cost about £2.50. I was (and still am) very good at stretching a chicken but one chicken and some potatoes does not feed a family of 4 for a week. It is just one of the reasons he is an XH.

Happystrider1 · 10/03/2025 22:03

When I moved it with DH he would do a shop one week and I would the next week. When it was his week I'd ask what was for dinner on day 3 as the fridge would be bare. Somehow he would still spend the same as I did for a week's worth. I soon took over doing it all. Unfortunately this is what happens when mothers do everything for their son's and don't teach them how to run a house. Prior to me moving in I was a student and he'd always come over to our student house to be fed despite working. He now admits that he just wouldn't have bothered eating had I not fed him...
