But he's gone to Iceland and spent well over £100 which would be fine except he's just bought lots of frozen beige shit. There no fresh fruit, salad or nice cut of meat. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to be mean but he's spent our entire budget and I feel there's nothing for me to eat. I'm trying to lose weight so I've been going to Tesco and getting lots of fresh fruit, fresh meat healthy Greek yoghurt and nice bits for the kids lunches. I feel a bit irritated because it feels such a waste of money.

Don't get me wrong I love a good Iceland haul but I'm a bit miffed that's he's put no thought into it.

Anyway... I'm digging my way out off my chicken nugget quary if you're looking for me lol

Mine shops like he's stocking up the harvest festival/a preppers convention. Tins, tins and more bloody tins. And just to keep it exciting the odd bag of lentils and a bag of rice

Mine does this too! He would get 8 tins of tuna every week if I let him, the kids hate it, why do I have 12 cans of the stuff in my cupboard, who bought all the lentils and why!? He shops a bit like it's 1956 and I think it's because his family were old fashioned. He asked if I thought the kids would like fish paste sandwiches- who says yes to this!?! Can you even buy fish paste. It's a mystery

LBFseBrom · 03/03/2025 18:21

That was silly of him, Iceland stocks a lot of fresh fruit and veg, salad stuff, some meat, eggs and other things. There must surely be something out of what he has bought that you can eat.

Do you not have a shopping list?

How would anyone know what to buy without one?

Me "I'm going to Tesco, do you want anything?"
Him " Stella, couple of bottles of red, and can you see if they have still got Pot Noodles on offer"

Whoyoutakingto · 03/03/2025 18:28

Just me and 21 year old son at home this year, I am veggie he is not so I buy lots of vegetables and fruits and staples, I also buy enough meat, chicken for 7 meals. He is a gym bunny so buys all other stuff himself eg protein yogurt, shakes extra cooked meats for lunches. It works well and he can’t say there are no snacks etc as it is his own responsibility. When he is at uni he buys and cooks for himself, I am trying to train him into being a good prospective partner 😂

bluegreen89 · 03/03/2025 18:35

I feel a bit smug right now (said in a light hearted way) as my DH does a decent food shop. Tbh not sure how funny I would find this, he is a grown up and I'd expect a better effort. Also if he knows you are trying to be healthy, this is quite thoughtless.

Hwi · 03/03/2025 18:41

You don't have to eat good quality food to lose weight, you just have to reduce your calorie intake.

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 03/03/2025 18:47

Have skimmed a bit.

But had to say. DH's favourite purchase
Ripen.At.Home. - They never do.

FrenchandSaunders · 03/03/2025 16:36

DH came home with a pack of 24 guiness cans, a huge slab of cheese and some loo roll the other day .....

I’m reminded of a birthday card: woman sitting in chair with murderous expression, happy bloke coming through the door with a massive telly.

Bubble from bloke’s mouth saying, ‘They didn’t have any celery, so I got this instead.’ 😂

Lucycantdance · 03/03/2025 18:56

This thread is unbelievably cringe. DH the “plonker” manages to have a great job and be good at other things but somehow can’t do the food shop properly and bought a load of shit so “won’t be doing again” LOLZ

MrTiddlesTheCat · 03/03/2025 17:24

My DH usually gets similar stuff to me but adds to it with 'just in case' foods by the ton. Things we don't really eat but that will see us through armaggeddon. Tinned fish balls in dill sauce, instant noodles, weird random tins that he thought looked intetesting.

I have to periodically bag it all up and bin it because the pantry gets gridlocked with it.

What a waste. Food bank donation, surely?

diddl · 03/03/2025 19:11

I remember reading about a husband who supposedly bought 100 cobs instead of loo rolls.

Always thought it must be an urban myth.

Reading this, I'm not so sure.

biscuitsandbooks · 03/03/2025 19:11

I'd be so embarrassed to be married to a grown man who couldn't buy food to feed his family.

This isn't funny, it's appalling.

LBFseBrom · 03/03/2025 19:18

My late husband liked doing grocery shopping and generally he chose things well, however he could not resist a bogof or a 3for2. The fridge was often bursting with food that needed to be eaten and sometimes wasn't, not freezable. He did buy what was on my shopping list though, I'll give him that. However I introduced online shopping and that was better, we had it delivered. I still do have all groceries delivered, I ring the changes with supermarkets.

localnotail · 03/03/2025 19:22

This is hilarious. My 11 year l old would probably do a shop as described here - beige stuff, cakes and fizzy drinks - but even he would buy carrots, broccoli and fruit as he eats and like the stuff!

How come all your DHs are such man children? Really weird. All the grown up guys I know would not consider a 100 quid worth of fast food an acceptable family shop! Sorry for posturing ))

AInightingale · 03/03/2025 19:23

What are you going to eat this week, in all seriousness?

Pea/ lentil soup, porridge, apples. Box of eggs...You could probably do it for a week for less than a tenner, but you shouldn't have to.

The fact he's spent so much on utter shit, which is usually cheaper, is what would really annoy me.

ssd · 03/03/2025 19:25

Dh went shopping the other day.
He got mouthwash.
Because he needed it.

The end.

SomethingFun · 03/03/2025 19:27

No one likes doing the weekly shop- coming up with 7+ meals that everyone will eat, meet nutritional requirements, fit your budget and can be made in the time you have available is hard, thankless work. How much easier to stick some packets from Iceland in a trolley and say you’ve done a shop. Every day on mn makes me happy I’m not shackled to someone’s else’s dh 😁

localnotail · 03/03/2025 19:30

I actually agree with someone above that the sole reason for outrageously shit shopping choice is never having to do it again.

I would send the fucker back to Iceland for refund, and then to Tesco to get proper food.

Strictlymad · 03/03/2025 19:32

Semiramide · 03/03/2025 17:14

Look, I know he is meant to be a grownup but he clearly never got the healthy meals preparation memo. So, even though he should know better, you'll have to take control. This is what I did....... over 40 years ago.

  • I prepared a strict shopping list based on my meal plan and toiletries etc that needed replacing.
  • I wrote the list in sections, in the order they are stocked at the supermarket, e.g. produce, meat, dairy, cereals, bread, etc.
  • I had a pre-printed list, so very little additional input required.
It worked. After a year or 2 he got the hang of it and it has been working perfectly ever since. Now I just have to tell him "bring some chicken breasts and salmon, and we're out of loo rolls"........ and he'll know how to connect the dots and buy what's needed.

I despair that it took more training than an assistance dog 😂😂😂

That's it! He's a bellend!

Brefugee · 03/03/2025 19:35

why don't you have an actual list? in this day and age it is more than easy to have one central list that you can both use.

Mamabear487 · 03/03/2025 19:36

Men should not be trusted with the food shop. They are honestly like children. Not sure how mine got through life before me tbh 😂

Titasaducksarse · 03/03/2025 19:36

I'm spoilt as OH despite working away 4 days a week enjoys food shopping so does it all every Friday and a good job of it too as I hate it.

NatMoz · 03/03/2025 19:38

Don't people write shopping lists anymore? We have a shared shopping list app and add to it throughout the week so whoever does the shop knows what's needed
