But he's gone to Iceland and spent well over £100 which would be fine except he's just bought lots of frozen beige shit. There no fresh fruit, salad or nice cut of meat. Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to be mean but he's spent our entire budget and I feel there's nothing for me to eat. I'm trying to lose weight so I've been going to Tesco and getting lots of fresh fruit, fresh meat healthy Greek yoghurt and nice bits for the kids lunches. I feel a bit irritated because it feels such a waste of money.

Don't get me wrong I love a good Iceland haul but I'm a bit miffed that's he's put no thought into it.

Anyway... I'm digging my way out off my chicken nugget quary if you're looking for me lol

@Isthiswhatmenthink you are so shocked at this? Really? You need to broaden your horizons if that's really the case

JustMyView13 · 03/03/2025 17:49

We have a shopping list. And the rule is, if it’s not on the list you can’t moan if it’s missed.
We do eat healthy though and largely rotate amongst the same 15 or so meals. So providing we have enough ingredients we’re good for the week.
Honestly this just strikes me as poor communication.

1apenny2apenny · 03/03/2025 17:51

So presumably OP your DH likes to eat all the beige food and isn't worried about his health? If my DP did that he'd be eating all that stuff until it was gone and I would buy fresh stuff for me and the kids.

@SpidersAreShitheads we were both up for eliminating Upf’s from our diet, after reading ultra processed people, but it’s difficult to give up all the nice things. I just wish he had less expensive tastes.

My DH hasn't got the memo either. I'm pre-diabetic and need to cut right back on carbs, sugar, fat and processed meat. If he goes shopping, he will buy cheese & onion quiche, chicken kiev, cod in breadcrumbs, cornish pasties, steak pie, pizza, frozen chips, crumpets, doughnuts, corned beef, sausages, burgers, white bread...
This last week's highlights have been a multipack of Mars bars, lemon drizzle cake and goats cheese.

Edited

Bliss. That's my dream shop.
I'm diabetic so never get it.

See mine goes snack crazy, but forgets to buy things that everyone likes. One time he went for bread and milk and spent £30 he got carried away down the biscuit aisle and bought every flavour of 'club' biscuit and a range of other nonsense that nobody else eats lol

I mourn the loss of fruit club

I have the opposite problem. I like beige crap but my husbands a chef so he buys healthy stuff and I just want to be a fat pig 🥲

When dh did the shopping and I did the cooking his shop would be along the lines of:

"Look I've bought some chops for one day, ingredients for a lasagne another day, maybe you could use this beef to make beef wellington, and stuff for steak and kidney pie, a chicken to roast for another day and in case you need an easy meal I've got some chicken nuggets which there aren't enough for all the children so I'll put them in the freezer."

And I'd be thinking: Mondays we need something we can eat between 5 and 6 and I'm out all day until 4:30, ditto Thursday and Friday, Wednesday we've got to catch the bus straight after school and aren't back until 7:30 so need an easy meal then, and Tuesdays I've promised the children we'll make cakes so I really don't want to be cooking a complicated meal too.

Now he does the cooking, the shop looks much more like:

  1. 2x frozen pizza
  2. Chicken Kyivs
  3. Bought lasagne
  4. Bought pie
  5. Sausages and rolls for hot dogs...

We do still have a roast on Sundays though. 🤣

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 03/03/2025 17:58

My DP does the shop and it costs twice as much and is all ingredient.. nothing to actually eat.

Thindog · 03/03/2025 17:59

My husband once went to Lidl for some carrots and milk and returned with an arc welder!

bertiebump · 03/03/2025 18:06

Hmmm bloke here. I read all these posts completely understanding the other blokes at the same time as getting it may be frustrating. I was sacked from shopping about 5 years into our 29 year marriage.
I find myself looking at the booze on offer, the nuts on offer, the reduced shite and coming out with nothing

fetchacloth · 03/03/2025 18:06

Years ago my now ex H did the weekly shop and came home with mountains of food that was near it's use by date. Much of it was put in the freezer to extend it's life but some of it wasn't freezable.
Despite having a list beforehand, he only went down the food aisles so items such as loo roll, bleach, tea and coffee didn't make the cut 🙄

Unless you have a learning difficulty this is pathetic

Nothatgingerpirate · 03/03/2025 18:08

Why frozen, though?
I get he went to Iceland, but couple of PPs said the same.
My husband would buy an entire shop of sweet treats and then ask where the fruit is and we didn't buy any real food....😊

CautiousLurker01 · 03/03/2025 18:08

Did you not think to give him a list? Like, get what you like but make sure there’s enough fruit and salad for me to last a week? Like normal couples who communicate?

I don't get the post, maybe I have an undiscovered learning difficulty.

Tales of DH's' not getting the memo' re shopping and the daft things they buy or forget isn't amusing or funny. They are supposed to be fully functioning adults with brains in their head!
No one sent me or anyone else on here a 'memo'!
If my husband came home with Iceland finest beige I would think.he had a knock on the head!
If they need a helping hand to do the 'big' shop tell them to start in the bathroom, see what toiletries are running low, look in the cleaning cupboard, what's going to run out there, then think about essentials then look at the planned meals or at least things that can be used to make different meals.
Incompetence is not a great quality.

" he went after taking the kids to football to surprise me"

Ah… so now you can’t even be cross with him really. Though that wouldn’t stop me. Bit of a tartar, me!

Never surprises me how DHs and DCs can eat the same stuff month in and month out, yet not be able to buy that very same stuff if they are asked to pop to the shops.

Teaandtoastserveddaily · 03/03/2025 18:14

Surely you don't just go to the shop without a list and meal plan though?

We do our shop online but literally everything we order is accounted for and to be used for a specific meal.

Going to the shops and just buying stuff would be awful like surely you forget essential items 😬😬

justasking111 · 03/03/2025 18:14

We have shopping list pads which we both fill in as we need more stuff. If he takes the list I'm pretty safe but he will add biscuits, crisps, and can't resist the free pastries he gets on his Lidl app. I was gifted a doughnut the other day 🙈😄

Hayley1256 · 03/03/2025 18:17

My EXDH use to be proud of himself for doing shit like this, I found it very stressful having to work full time, be the main caregiver to a toddler and do all the meal planning and food shopping. He was useless at thinking of any kind of meals to put together (even things like scrambled eggs on toast) - part of the reason he is my ex! My DP is a breath of fresh air, we talk about what meals we want to have and are both capable of doing the shopping with treats and household stuff.

Totototo · 03/03/2025 18:18

My just turned 18 year old son is capable of doing a healthy food shop. He’s been doing it since he left for Uni 2 weeks after turning 18. It’s not rocket science.

WimbyAce · 03/03/2025 18:18

Over £100 in Iceland is a lot!! What did he buy??
