I'm in my 50s and I've never eaten...

Tiramisu.

I'm about to try some.
I know I'm not going to like it, but hey ho! 😅

Anything you've yet to try?

OP posts:
Toseland · 02/03/2025 18:00

I've avoided snails in France and sheep's brains in Morocco.
I dislike all sea food most of which I would never try.
Love tiramisu, I've not found a pudding I don't like yet!

BobbyBiscuits · 02/03/2025 17:53

If you like creamy sweet things then tirimisu is easy to love! It's pretty bad in the way I can eat an unholy amount of it before I realise and feel bloated.
I'm trying to think of 'normal' foods I've never tried...
Tripe? But nobody really eats that so I'd be surprised if that is unusual.
I've never tried sandwich spread, or potted meat from a jar? But again, it's pretty old school so probably many haven't.

My Gran and late Mil used to make potted meat it was delicious and definitely didn't taste like the jar ones, nobody seems to make it anymore.

Mudkipper · 02/03/2025 18:03

I know someone who was 60 before she ate a tomato. She loves them now but she'd never fancied them.

I've never eaten oysters and never will, except one smoked one once. The earth did not move for me. I've tried kimchi and it gave me the shits. So did haggis. So did sauerkraut last time I ate it. I'm sure tripe would too so I'm not risking that. I haven't tried any of the more esoteric types of shellfish but I like prawns, mussels, crab, lobster, scallops and clams.

MyDeftDuck · 02/03/2025 18:03

EBearhug · 02/03/2025 17:01

Tripe

Likewise.......the very sight of it makes me baulk

@FridgeJenga 😄

I've never watched Pretty Woman (not sure I want to now).

Love Julia Roberts!

Tripe .... it's the smell.

SurferRona · 02/03/2025 18:06

Think I’ve tried all of these- andouilletes, snails, bottarga, oysters, winkles, frogs legs, pigs trotters, tripe (boak), razor clams, teeny splodge of caviar…also can I offer sea urchin? Never had durian! Love offal. Sweetbreads are delish !

edit to add: insect, once in a lollipop!

FlowerUser · 02/03/2025 18:06

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 02/03/2025 17:55

Tried most of these including snails and oysters (gave some to the cat whose nick name was Garfield and he declined)

I’ve never tried steak tartare and I’m worried I won’t eat it right. How do you eat it? Is there bread to put it on generally or do you just mix it with the egg and eat it with a spoon?

Steak tartare is great with Worcester sauce or tabasco if you like heat. Mix it all up with the egg.

I've tried almost everything everyone has mentioned including fried insects - nutty.
I love escargots, very garlicky.
Frogs' legs taste like chicken but there's not a lot of meat on the bone.
I've also had crocodile - very tasty and gizzards which sound horrible but are amazing. Anything where an animal has had ro use its muscles is tastier than breast meat. Try chicken thighs rather than breast or drumsticks. They are cheaper than breast too.
The French do a great gizzard salad.
Caviar is fine but I don't understand why it costs so much.
I didn't eat foie gras for years as a matter of principle but then I had some and it was divine! Suddenly animal welfare was no longer a concern.

Rabbit is tasty and oysters have a frisson that's quite delightful. Though once you have a bad one you shouldn't eat them again.
I really liked haggis too.
Despite hating the smell, once I was persuaded to eat Stilton I loved it. Some food smells bad and tastes delicious. Some smells great but is meh - fruit "tea" doesn't live up to the hype.

I've tried just about everything on the list, some I like better than others.
Durian is lovely; insects are just like a crisp but with bits that get stuck in your teeth.
I love all offal, including brains. Only bits I haven't tried are testicles; my butcher tells me they are slaughtermen's perks.
I love oysters, horsemeat.

I do not like artificial vegan collections of chemicals that pretend to be meat , cheese, etc.

P.S. Just thought - I hate tea.

Aah, brains! I'm old enough to have eaten them when they were allowed in England. (Mostly cooked by Italian restaurants.) Generally served in criply fried slices with a soft and deliciously flavoursome interior.

Dymaxion · 02/03/2025 18:09

Never had oysters, eel or tripe.

SpottedDonkey · 02/03/2025 18:10

I’m very much an omnivore, so I’m struggling to think of things I haven’t tried at least once. I have even eaten horse meat, in France obv. It was delicious & very lean, like venison.

Caviar & frogs legs are the only things which spring to mind.

80smonster · 02/03/2025 18:10

Never had a cup of tea, the smell of it turns my stomach.

pointythings · 02/03/2025 18:11

I'm 57 and the only thing I haven't eaten are insects and exotic things I haven't come across like lizards, testicles etc. I like most things, so far the only things I really can't get on with are candied peel, beetroot and pork belly.

Pickled onions, I remember always seeing them in chip shops in huge jars as a child. Can't really imagine how they taste though - are they crunchy with a really sharp vinegary taste? Do they taste like raw onion? Are they really hard to get your teeth through or are they softer than a raw onion with more of a taste like when they've been cooked?

Edited

Hang on, so your family never even had a jar of pickled onions at home? They were a staple for our Sunday left-overs supper with cold meat and salad.

FridgeJenga · 02/03/2025 18:12

@Hairoit can't remember the taste but it was the smell that we couldn't get past!
They're banned in hotel rooms and in lifts for a reason!
We tried it sitting on a bench outside a temple, in some hope perhaps that divine intervention would help appreciate this 'King of Fruits' but it was in vain unfortunately 😆

@Jade520 that's probably exactly what it tastes like!
We love ALL fruits, but not the durian sadly.

By the way, mangosteens were also banned in the hotels in the area where we stayed.
I think perhaps because of the purple dye from the peel?
Luckily we were Airbnb.

Black pudding. Haggis. Razor clams.

All of which are in my freezer so I never run out

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/03/2025 18:14

I've never tried it either, coffee is the most unpleasant taste, only beaten by salted caramel.

I used to buy & cook brains myself.

I last had them in Rome, probably >10 years ago.

Didn't know they weren't allowed now - just hadn't seen them as it's a long trek to a proper butcher from where I live.

Stai · 02/03/2025 18:15

CrystalSingerFan · 02/03/2025 17:45

I've never eaten bottarga, but that's because I don't live near the Mediterranean/Fortnum and Maison.

Is it as fab (if you're a seafood fan) as I imagine...

A lot of Italian restaurants do a bottaga pasta. It’s delicious. Our local in North London does it, it’s my go to order.

Weddingbutterfly · 02/03/2025 18:15

Never eaten king prawns, got one to three inches from mouth but couldn’t get past “eating a giant slug”
don’t eat little prawns but have tried

Please tell me where you get your razor clams.

BobbyBiscuits · 02/03/2025 18:15

@Coffeeishot I bet your nans homemade one was awesome! Kind of like salt beef, but in a tin? I'm just guessing now! X
