Zelensky - feeling quite sad

Bakewelltart1 · 01/03/2025 20:18

I know that there are several threads about him, but I’ve watched the interview again today.
I don’t know what’s made me feel more sad - how exhausted and disappointed he looked, the fact that English isn’t his first language and it must have been hard to speak, let alone speak whilst being verbally attacked, or the suit question.
When the war is over, I want to buy that man the best suit money can buy!
How can anyone kick someone when they are so down anyway.

How much would my bill be if I was in the hospital for ten days after an injury?

I bet someone will say, "you need to have travel insurance". Yes, and I would. Your ex should have had it also.

Of course, costs here are high. Our nurses are paid quite well, as are our doctors, OR workers, ER workers, lab and x-ray staff and compared to the UK, even support staff. That all costs money. We also pay so much more for medicine, which I think sucks because other countries get them cheap, yet we developed the medicines.

The very, very worse thing in this country is medical helicopter. If a trauma center sends theirs, it's not bad and usually covered by insurance but if they are already out, without your permission, they will send a private med helo company and even after insurance, the bill can be 30K or more. That should be illegal.

Drugs / medicines are researched and developed in many countries, the US doesn't lead in this area. The US leads in developing new patents which is not the same thing.

Most of the world is also quite happy to use generic medicines.

Take a simple pain killer like co-codamol. Most of the world are happy to use a generic version which is out of patent.

But in the US the drug companies will tinker with the 'recipe' and that means they can get another patent and sell at a premium.

Paracetamol / acetaminophen costs pennies in the UK

Tylenol is the brand name used in the US and from what I can see online is about $13 at Walmart.

It was first used in humans in the1800s so is far out of patent. Adding something that has no real effect eg changes the colour of the pills means it can be patented as a new product.

I'm sorry, but how much has the USA gotten back from Ukraine?

All I ever hear here is "giving", with zero quid pro quo. I hope we are getting something back for the hundreds of billions we have given. I won't hold my breath though.

Why should they ‘get anything back’ from Ukraine? Ukraine is fighting a common enemy, an enemy that would see the US completely destabilised and dismantled if they got their way. Ukraine is willing to take on the bloody process of war, all we need to do is throw money at them to support it and you begrudge that?

The UK is the biggest benefactor after the States and Germany, and considering our puny and stagnant economy, have given far more than we can afford. I don’t begrudge them a penny, in fact we should be raising more. If Trump was the UK PM and had been advocating for Putin in this way there would be calls for him to be taken to the Tower of London. How the Americans tolerate this show of treachery is beyond me.

I have felt the full range of emotions about this too op. I am comforted by the huge rally of worldwide support for Ukraine. Maybe it will focus minds again and work to Zelenskyy’s favour in the longer term.

I agree. I’m hoping this absolutely ambush and spectacle will reinvigorate the Ukrainian cause across Europe.

Zelenskyy posted a video to his Instagram stories last night (or his PR person did!) showing the crowds cheering for him as he approached Number 10. I’m pleased he knows the British public supports him and I hope it boosted his morale after a deeply shitty time in the States. There is apparently another show of support today, so if any of you lovely Mumsnetters live in London please go! (I’m at the other end of the country with toddlers - otherwise I absolutely would!)

It was a horrible display. "Why aren't you wearing a suit?". They have no idea what war means.
To hector and bully him like that was shameful.
Zekensky was right, before they shut him down, that they have a big ocean to protect them. They have no idea what it's like to have a large, powerful aggressor on your border.

.

So why didn't he ask Elon Musk, who was wearing jeans, trainers and a baseball cap,the same question?

Wildflowers99 · 02/03/2025 07:01

Because he’s a billionaire and not the leader of a (to them) insignificant country under attack. They’re cowards.

We do have generics over here, including acetaminophen and ibuprofen and it must be cheaper her than in the UK since on MN, I am always reading on how UK visitors stock up when here.

As soon as the patents expire, we use prescription generics too. LOL! Still too expensive and too many pharm companies being greedy with needed meds. Luckily, we do have things like GoodRx and insurance, though they don't help all the time.

We have prices like this:
Member's Mark 500mg Extra Strength Acetaminophen MegaSize 2Pack (600 Count Each)
Brand: MEMBER´S MARK
$22.28 with 9 percent savings$22.28

That's 1200 paracetamol for about 2 pence each.

There are better deals out there but just looked one place.

But, he cannot look like a millionaire to the world.

"All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,"

Yes,I know that but OP seems to think the guy is stoney broke and is not only in need of a free suit but a 'nice meal' as well. Perhaps she can set up a Go Fund Me 🙄

Yeah, that’s exactly what she meant, obviously. She’s probably preparing a food parcel as we speak. Ffs

I'd happily go and cheer if I lived near London, zelensky has been immense and has held that line as he keeps stressing. But I want this war to end

It's even going to get more expensive and harder to get them with tariffs slapped on so good luck.
While generics are cheaper in the US, they only account for 12% of drug spending. While the average US person has to spend more than double the amount for healthcare provisions than an average UK citizen.

But that's what you guys voted for in exchange for lower taxes.

‘Other countries get them cheap yet we developed the medicines’ that’s a bold and incorrect statement! So only the US develops medicines? If only there was somewhere that you could check whether what people post is true 🤔 No one outside of the US admires your health system, our NHS may well be struggling due to a massive lack of investment from 2010-2024 but I’d take it any day over yours.

MarvellousMarch · 02/03/2025 08:35

@Wildflowers99 I'm sure he does but he's also been entrenched in this position for a long time and may want to try and win still.

CarmelaBrunella · 02/03/2025 08:42

Well, it was so nice to see Zekensky so warmly welcomed by Starmer in Downing Street and treated with courtesy and respect. That's how leaders should act.
Not like bit part actors in some Mafia movie.

A new angle of footage from the Oval Office on Friday shows Trump winking at Monstrous Marjorie's reporter OH as he asked the "why aren't you wearing a suit?" question, which shows the meeting was set-up to belittle Zeleneskyy.

If Scotland had a resource that Russia wanted, we should just hand the land over? Do you think Trump would let Russia take Alaska?

Scotland did have a resource Trump wanted. A SSSI - a rare 14 mile sand dune environment at Balmedie just north of Aberdeen. Trump plonked a unneeded golf course over the top of it as his mother was Scottish (she came from Lewis).
Local council said no, Sturgeon\SNP pulled rank and said yes. Site lost its SSSI status and Trump threw a tantrum over that and said we should thank him as he had 'stablished' the dunes (which are supposed to move).

Trump is expecting Denmark to let him take Greenland. The man is a delusional train wreck...

You obviously have DTS and are not seeing this objectively. His administration has gotten off to a tremendous start for the American people and people are happy with what he has accomplished so far. I think the meeting on Friday couple have been handled better all round but on the whole Trump is delivering for America as he was elected to do.

Wonder if the 10s of 1000s of workers sacked and/or told to justify their existence via 5 bullet points now think so?

Will they still be happy when imported goods and products increase in price & when Boeing or Tesla etc lay off even more workers when countries stop buying their unreliable products and services?

On reparations, yes there isn't anything wrong in asking for mineral rights, the Yanks loaned Europe billions after WW2... but this should be in conjunction with security guarantees i.e Military Support... Trump has refused this, leaving Ukraine & by extension Europe, vulnerable..

By doing this, Trump has torn up the 80 year relationship with Europe, possibly never to recover, i hope you and your Trump supporters think this is worthwhile.

The majority in Europe now think the Americans, generally speaking, are not our friends anymore & thats putting it mildly.

The USA's 'gifts' to Ukraine have been in the form.of military hardware made by American firms, contributing to their profits (and e.g. the salaries of their workers).

So yes, Ukraine has benefited, but the American arms industry has also benefited considerably from their government.

I saw a clip of Trump speaking to camera sometime after the interview. He said he wanted peace quickly and that he cared about all of the Ukrainian and Russian soldiers who were dying. And he feared that giving more support to Ukraine would "embolden" Zelenskyy to keep on fighting.

What about emboldening Putin to keep on fighting? Presumably, Trump doesn't see that as a problem.

Edited

That's the bit that confuses me.

Russia illegally invaded Ukraine.

But trumps solution seems to be for Ukraine to give him their wealth through minerals and Russia the land they want and that will solve it.

Thereby emboldening Russia to go again when it chooses. There was only 8 years between Crimea and this.

And then afterwards the Americans cancelled the press conference and the meal and basically kicked him out. They should be ashamed, and I'm sure many decent Americans are.

They are or at least the decent ones are. They were mortified last time he won and they're more mortified now but they need to accept that their own apathy and the Democrats' general shitness gave their country away.

itsgettingweird · 02/03/2025 09:28

Yes, it's such a shame. So many millions of decent Americans will be horrified about how they are represented. Including many Republicans, of course.
I don't know much about what's gone wrong with the Democrats.

Well exactly.

Go back to being a Russian satellite state (because we'd all love to live under Russian control, wouldn't we?), plus a US satellite state in regard of the minerals. Until Putin decides he wants the minerals, and the USA won't be able to do anything about it...
