Yeah we need to remember that accidents still happen, which is my first bet for this. Sabotage is my second thought but I think this kind of blatant sabotage is a bit of a step too far for Russia at this point.

Sub station fires are quite common, though on top of the NS ship collision...

However, i'm surprised that LHR relied on one substation to run everything.

I cannot speak for every one but i do know that a major UK defence base, uses more than one substation and uses more than one telecoms exchange to ensure redundancy in the case of accident or worse.

I don't think its beyond Russia at all, they released a nerve agent in the UK & they are far more emboldened now.

notimagain · 21/03/2025 08:46

I’m afraid there is a major problem now that the general population simply don’t believe that accidents/incidents can happen because automation/computers/AI /the security services etc etc.

Every bloody aircraft accident for the last year, and at least one shipping one has been β€œthe Russians” whereas the reality has been oft as not been a good old fashioned stuff up.

Edited

This in itself slowly nudges people towards a war-mindset.

I'm not following UK media much. How far is there a growing sense (or not) that Russia under the Kremlin are an active and increasing threat?

Igotjelly · 21/03/2025 09:35

Sorry but I just don’t agree. This sort of sabotage is 100% from Russia’s playbook. As @Alexandra2001 they’ve used chemical weapons on British soil, they’ve attacked the NHS using cyber warfare, they planned for explosives to be shipped on DHL flights, they’ve set fire to various shopping centres across Europe and they were behind the sabotage of France’s rail network during the Olympics. And that’s the stuff we know about.

I’m inclined to agree with this. Again I am biased but I think Russia is getting bolder now they have Donald in their pocket

It is very surprising that they rely on just one substation, its not like its an airport in the middle of nowhere!

They released the nerve agent at a time when the UK was still trying to pretend that Russia wasn't an enemy though, so they probably felt pretty safe in doing so. But it is true that their sabotage has been ramping up lately so perhaps. I'm still more inclined to think accident first because those do happen anywhere with a lot of electricity - a local factory to me has a fire on almost a weekly basis, the fire engines might as well live there!

heldinadream · 21/03/2025 10:03

From the Guardian - UK energy secretary Ed Miliband continues his morning media round, and he told Good Morning Britain that today’s outage β€œmakes Heathrow look quite vulnerable,” adding it was necessary to β€œlearn lessons … about not just Heathrow, but how we protect our major infrastructure.”
He was quoted by PA Media as saying:
β€œWhat it makes me believe is we’ve got to understand why this happened, and we’ve got to work out what the lessons are for the resilience of our infrastructure.”
I think you can interpret that any way you like!

Igotjelly · 21/03/2025 10:50

The thing is even if this wasn’t them we live in a world where it could have been and it exposes our vulnerabilities.

heldinadream · 21/03/2025 10:57

Yes exactly. Part of me is thinking am I coming across as a bonkers conspiracy theorist and should I just shut up and part of me is thinking COURSE IT'S THE FUCKING RUSSIANS, ARE YOU NUTS!
And everything in between. It's exhausting.
And I think even a year ago I would not have leapt to so much suspicion. It's Trump, he's changed the whole landscape.
Cheeto Corleone. Marmalade Mafioso.

DdraigGoch · 21/03/2025 11:06

Miliband saying that the backup generator was also affected. So is that down to poor design (locating it close enough that it's vulnerable) or a deliberate action?

heldinadream · 21/03/2025 11:23

Worth checking the convos on this thread too, re conspiracy or cock-up.

Crimea is a Ukrainian peninsula, and its recognition as Russian was not discussed during the conversation with US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

Without Ukrainians, Crimea is dyingβ€”there have been no tourists there for 11 years. Before the occupation, three million tourists visited in the summer, 2.8 million of them Ukrainians, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Norway is tripling its defense support for Ukraine to $8 billion, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr StΓΈre announced. The funds will be allocated for artillery, ammunition, drones, and investments in developing Ukraine’s production base. The decision was unanimously approved by parliament.

US presidential envoy Keith Kellogg stated that the upcoming talks between the US, Ukraine, and Russia in Saudi Arabia will follow the β€œproximity principle,” with discussions taking place in adjacent rooms.

❗️Russian forces launched a massive drone attack overnight. More than 15 explosions were reported in Odesa, leaving parts of the city without power. Explosions were also heard in Sumy, Zaporizhzhia, and Kremenchuk.

In Engels, [the] strike resulted in the loss of Russian missiles, including Kh-101, though the exact number is yet to be determined, according to Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation.

Emmanuel Macron is exploring alternatives to deploying European military forces in Ukraine, including the idea of establishing a mission under the UN to protect a potential peace agreement. This concept was discussed with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during a European Council summit. However, such a UN peacekeeping mission would require approval from the Security Council, where both Russia and possibly the US could veto it, making its implementation uncertain.
Additionally, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is signaling a shift in focus from sending European ground troops to providing air and naval support to Ukraine. There is also opposition within the EU from leaders like Giorgia Meloni and Donald Tusk, who view the deployment of European troops as costly and ineffective. These factors may complicate Macron's proposal.

The European Union has stopped discussing the confiscation of frozen Russian assets, according to the conclusions of the EU summit on March 20, obtained by Deutsche Welle. The approved text states that under EU law, these assets must remain frozen until Russia ends its war against Ukraine and compensates for the damage caused.
Several EU countries opposed confiscating over 200 billion euros in Russian assets, citing legal constraints, potential risks to European financial competitiveness, the importance of using interest from these assets to support Ukraine, and their value as leverage in future peace negotiations.
β€œWe are starting to think about the endgame in Ukraine, about peace talks, a ceasefire, a peace agreement that could be signed in three months or three years. And people are starting to understand that having these assets may be more important than confiscating them without knowing what to do with them,” said a European diplomat before the summit.

Italy has launched the β€œPro.UKR” project, a €9 million initiative aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural development and food security in Odesa region, the Italian Embassy in Ukraine told the EP.
The agreement for the project was signed in the Italian city of Bari between the International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Research, Italian Ambassador Carlo Formosa, and Ukraine’s Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Vitaliy Koval.
β€œPro.UKR” will enhance the capabilities of agricultural producers in Odesa region, focusing on providing tools for agricultural and livestock production, introducing advanced technologies, and implementing sustainable irrigation systems. The project will be fully carried out in Odesa.

No surprise there TBH.

Thomas Bach, her predecessor at the IOC, seemed slightly pro Russian in some of his views, Coventry was seen by many as the continuity Bach candidate in the race to replace him.

Seb Coe, head of World Athletics and who was another candidate for the IOC post was OTOH very outspoken at times on Russia and doping. The cynical might suggest that was something that did him no favours at all in the ballot.

Absolutely nothing. Although there is some reporting of what's happening, it's being done in a way that implies it won't affect us here.
I think it will be a big shock for a lot of people as very little is being done to prepare the public. When the budget with more defence spending is announced, there will be a lot of people asking why.
