Do you pay your TV licence?

Obviously I do but just curious, if you're eligible e.g. watch live tv, do you?

OP posts:

You can listen to the news on the radio. And it doesn't have to be BBC radio I listen to Greatest Hits or Absolute
You can get news on your phone using a thing called a search engine. Brings up all sorts. You can do that crazy old thing if buying a newspaper.
TVs have only been a household item for around 72 years and people managed for centuries without them.

MajorCarolDanvers · 01/03/2025 07:21

Yes. I am law abiding.

Sinkintotheswamp · 01/03/2025 07:31

Greatest hits news isn't really in depth though. I guess I see the tv/radio news as a non negotiable part of my routine and company for me so I can hear or see human voices 🤔.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 01/03/2025 07:33

Yep because we watch a small amount of live tv and i watch documentaries/films on bbc iplayer. I think it’s time it’s scrapped and replaced with advertising though.

the BBC had Nigel Farage on Question Time before the EU referendum more than any other guest. When I removed my TV in 2014 I used to record QT and watch at work on a weekend - I do sleep ins. The last ten years in this country with all the self serving politicians I do not want to watch any shit show news tbh.
I didn't have to watch any of the lies Johnson told in his liefests.
There are radio news channels.i see plenty of humans on a daily basis I look after 4 grandchildren every day from 5.45am.
And you know there are some fab podcasts out there like Gary Linekers TRIP or TRIH which I can listen to through Spotify.
There are also current affair chats on here which you can put your own opinion on.

RampantIvy · 01/03/2025 07:49

Blanket statements like "everything the BBC produce is tripe" are just ridiculous. The BBC produces quality programmes and tripe, just like every other channel does.

Luddite26 · 01/03/2025 07:53

Andrew Marr on the New Statesman YouTube channel is a great news commentator.
Much better than when he was on the BBC. And there are so many others.

idkt · 01/03/2025 07:54

Yes I do when I changed banks my direct debit got cancelled and didn't realise I'd not paid it that month.

The payment was missed by 2 weeks and I had them knocking on my door with body cam on interviewing me!

Yet I know people who have never had one

Largestlegocollectionever · 01/03/2025 08:14

No way - they helped cover up Saville amongst other awful things.
I occasionally watch it too!

I haven't had a TV since 2014 and even after signing the declaration I get regularly hounded. Letters saying someone is coming on a certain date. Postcards asking if I will be in put through the door as though someone has been. It's disgusting the amount they spend on this harassment as they are not getting anything from me they are spending licence payers money doing nothing but hounding people in a way that nobody else is allowed to do.
They could spend that money on the programmes.

That's weird, were you late declaring it at some point or had a confrontation with someone who came to check?

I've not had a licence for 13 years and had an employee knock on the door 10 years ago, explained to him that I didn't use live TV just netflix and YouTube and 4od and he just came in to check the ariel wire wasn't plugged into the TV then left. Never had anyone since and he was polite and didn't question it just said if I began using bbc or live tv to let them know.

Luddite26 · 01/03/2025 08:42

No @Parrotparty.
I have done everything above board. No confrontation.
They have even threatened to come Christmas Day.
Obviously think they would catch me watching The King's Speech

RampantIvy · 01/03/2025 08:46

I agree that they should make the BBC subscription only. I would pay it to avoid the adverts.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 01/03/2025 08:49

Yes.

I don't agree with it but I don't want to risk getting fined.

I do not agree that the BBC is something special. I think it should be an opt in subscription service like others. It's not worthy of the worship it seems to get.

frozendaisy · 01/03/2025 08:55

Yes for Tomasz the weatherman mostly!

Clingfilm · 01/03/2025 08:59

Yes, I watch and listen to BBC content every day. I value the quality of output and the lack of ads. I don't have any other TV subscriptions.

Beaniebeemer · 01/03/2025 09:04

No, because:
a) I don’t watch TV
b) I don’t support an organisation that covers up child abuse / paedophilia

JacqFrost · 01/03/2025 09:30

Begrudgingly yes I do pay it even though I never watch the BBC except for Attenborough docs. It has nothing else that interests me. They keep changing the goalposts to keep people funding it though with the live streaming rule etc. Defund the BBC. It's simply not fit for modern day viewing habits.

Lonelycrab · 01/03/2025 09:34

No because I don’t watch live tv. Strictly YouTube and only pre-recorded things, no Sky news or Geebeebies or anything like that on there. And DVDs for watching movies.

LastNightMyPJsSavedMyLife · 01/03/2025 09:35

No as I don't meet the criteria for needing one. How much are the threatening harassment letters costing every year?

KingscoteStaff · 01/03/2025 09:39

Of course.
Worth it for BBC Sounds alone.

howchildrenreallylearn · 01/03/2025 09:44

MajorCarolDanvers · 01/03/2025 07:21

Yes. I am law abiding.

It’s not against the law to not have one. It’s perfectly legal.

You only need one if you watch live TV or bbc on catch up. If you don’t you don’t need one.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 01/03/2025 09:47

Yes but I do resent it!

I think it should be a subscription like Netflix and much cheaper.

verityveritas · 01/03/2025 09:50

Yes, because I love all the natural history programs and the kids love watching and rewatching deadly 60! I also regularly listen to radio 3/4 dramas. I just need to work out how to get Alexia to play radio 3/4, as my current radio has broken!

Booksaresick · 01/03/2025 10:04

Thanks for the thread. Im going to cancel my tv licence today. Money down the drain. I can still watch Netflix, Disney plus, prime, channel 4 on demand , ITVX on demand , you tube.
saving £156 a year
