Do you pay your TV licence?

Obviously I do but just curious, if you're eligible e.g. watch live tv, do you?

No. I wished I did do see the most recent Cormoran Strike series but other than that, I'm good. I mostly watch Disney+ & Netflix, or YouTube. Some BBC and Channel 4 stuff ends up on Netflix anyway.

WhisperingTree · 28/02/2025 22:50

No because I don’t watch TV, no BBC, no iTV , no channel 4. I don’t listen to the radio either. Everything I watch is on Netflix, Prime, Disney+ or YouTube. Got Spotify and Apple podcasts if I want to listen to something. The kids don’t watch broadcast either. When we go on holidays, none of us could stand broadcast TV because there is never anything to watch. No idea how it’s worth £10 a month when it’s worse than Prime (which is pretty much free because I got it for prime shipping).

Yes, when I moved house I forgot to switch my TV licence from my old address to the new one and within a week I was getting letters saying that they were aware my address was not licenced. So they do definitely find out and chase it up if you don't pay.

People just have to fill out a declaration that they're not using bbc or live TV every 3 years and they leave people alone. Its not a compulsory service like council tax.

SpottedDonkey · 28/02/2025 22:57

Yes. I would happily pay my license for R4 on its own.

But, I disagree with the license fee effectively being a tax, making. watching terrestrial TV without one a criminal offence. That is archaic & indefensible. Watching without paying should be a civil dispute.

evtheria · 28/02/2025 22:57

Yes

RampantIvy · 28/02/2025 22:58

Most of the "I don't watch TV " people still watch stuff on screens though.

Is there anyone on here who genuinely never watches anything on a screen unless they go to the cinema?

mumof1or2 · 28/02/2025 22:58

LittleRedRidingHoody · 28/02/2025 20:50

I don't, but make sure I follow the rules about what I can/can't watch at home (and catch up on BBC stuff at a family members house from time to time!)

This isn't the rule! If you have the ABILITY to watch live TV then you have to pay for a license.

Rainbow1235 · 28/02/2025 23:00

Yes I pay

TheAlertFinch · 28/02/2025 23:02

Yes and it pisses me off I pay when people pretend they don't watch iplayer or whatever when they clearly do,

Why should I pay so you can watch or listen for free.

Yes, becasue I watch a lot of TV and I am a law abiding citizen.

Law abiding citizen. Fucks sake. You’re watching TV not running a fucking drug cartel. It should be that you can choose to pay a subscription for the shoddy service all you damn well like, just like you can for Netflix, not be guilt tripped into paying for a licence and being made to feel like a fucking criminal.

Sooner the licence fee is scrapped the better, let them compete with the market.

No I don’t have a licence and no I won’t pay a penny towards paying salaries of any presenter who has been involved in paedophilia or abuse. Nor will I pay for trans ideology bullshit propaganda and fucking offensive drag to be rammed down my throat at every opportunity. Won’t be paying for their biased news, lying by omission and not covering the full story either. The only stuff worth watching was 50 year old repeats.

you’d have to be a brainwashed mug to think you were getting value for money. Law abiding… maybe tv does rot your brain after all.

BananaBubbless · 28/02/2025 23:16

Never had one but don’t watch live tv.

no you are Wrong

LittleRedRidingHoody · 28/02/2025 23:18

@mumof1or2 well thanks for the panic but double checking the website it says :

Typically, one TV Licence will allow use of TV equipment (any device) at the licensed address, by you, your family or any person working or visiting there.

So I think I'm okay!

WearyAuldWumman · 28/02/2025 23:19

Yes.

I went without a telly in the '80s because I couldn't afford the licence on top of my mortgage.

Vatsallfolks · 28/02/2025 23:19

Honestly ? I would am happy to pay it for Radio 4 alone !

Redglitter · 28/02/2025 23:19

No. I dont watch any live TV. I only watch via catch up & apps

Just had to get the trans in there didn't you. So, so predictable.

Joystir59 · 28/02/2025 23:21

Yes

BruisedNeckMeat · 28/02/2025 23:21

Yes but begrudgingly. In this day and age they surely have the technology to give people the choice over whether to watch BBC or not.

sorechalfonts · 28/02/2025 23:22

’the rules’ are clear use iPlayer or watch live tv you need a licence you can have a hundred or more devices in your home capable of receiving live tv but it DOES NOT mean you need a licence if you don’t watch LIVE TV or iPlayer

holidayblues25 · 28/02/2025 23:22

After the Palestinian documentary fiasco, I wish I didn't have to.

RampantIvy · 28/02/2025 23:23

Goodness, you are angry @RachelNoire Grin
Are the TV bosses at ITV, channels 4 and 5, Netflix, Amazon Prime and all the other streaming channels whiter than white? I doubt it.

I get good value for money from my licence. I don't think the service I get is shoddy. Yes, there is a lot of rubbish on TV, but there is a lot that isn't. I am selective about what I watch.

Sinkintotheswamp · 28/02/2025 23:24

Yes, it's cheap.as chips for what I watch and listen to. Usually have news and radio 1 / 4 on all day.

Nosebooper · 28/02/2025 23:26

No I don't, I don't watch live tv or iplayer, only catchup and Netflix.
