What is something ‘weird’ that you do that other people don’t?

I take a blanket to the cinema 🤷‍♀️😂

No but I stroke my arm, between my wrist and elbow, underside which is soft.
I find it comforting

My mum used to do this all the time! I’ve never seen anyone else do it since 😁

Another counter here. I count the syllables in a sentence. As I do this I imagine I'm drawing two crosses, first an X so syllable 1 will be the down stroke of the X and syllable 2 the upstroke then I do a plus cross where syllable 3 is the vertical line and syllable 4 the horizontal line. I breathe in and out while doing this (out breath for syllables 1 and 3 and in breath for syllables 2 and 4). Consequently, I like all sentences to have 4 syllables. If it only has 2 I repeat the sentence, if it's an odd number of syllables I have to repeat it 4 times.

I also do it with the names on my morning teams call. When my whole team is in the syllables are an odd number which I find unsettling. It's a good day when a colleague with an odd number of syllables doesn't dial in.

This sounds so weird to type out but glad others do the same. I'm on the wait list to be assessed for autism.

I know people who prefer their TV volume on odd numbers and others who prefer even.

For me it has to be a prime number. Thankfully our volume works best on different channels and apps between 7 and 17 usually.

Oh my goodness, I hadn’t realised but I do actually do this myself! 🤣

I love vinegar on a fry up or a bacon sandwich. I feel it makes it less greasy and I love the taste. My sister and I are the only people I know who do it.

I have a friend that puts vinegar on his roast dinner, his whole family do it. I tried it once and it actually not too bad.

I put shopping bags in the washing machine. Only the nice sturdy ones I want to keep. The thinner ones I use for recycling. (I still miss the Sainsbury's ones with the squirrel on them though.) One of my landlords had a go at me about it, next place I moved to one of my neighbours said it was a good idea!

Taransay · 25/02/2025 16:51

We always had Yorkshire pudding as a starter….with sugar and carnation milk!

Lovelyview · 25/02/2025 16:52

I can sit on the sofa with shoes and socks on, and I can sit on the sofa with bare feet, but I cannot sit on the sofa in just my socks. Also I eat toast with marmalade and Cheddar cheese.

252833z · 25/02/2025 16:55

I thank my ( older) appliances and my laptop often ( in my head) for doing a good job, and mostly for not breaking as I can't afford to replace them.
I like to think of it as being grateful for the small things in life, rather than being "weird" 😆

Pllystyrene · 25/02/2025 16:56

Love the blanket at the cinema idea! Definitely going to do that. I talk to Henry (the Hoover) like a child and ' feed' him breakfast 😂.

GrandHighPoohbah · 25/02/2025 13:46

I thank the dishwasher for doing the washing up.

Awww, that's really sweet! I wish Alexa/Siri/whatever would insist on pleases and thankyous - I hate that people just command them instead of asking nicely!

Scabber · 25/02/2025 17:01

I genuinely can't believe there's other people who count words/letters, just shows we're really not unique 🤣.

I thought I was such a weirdo and could never explain what it was or why I did it. I'll not count for months then one day hear or see a sentence and start counting. I count in squares of four and if the last letter isn't in the bottom right of a square I then need to start again but from another corner of the square . I usually know where to start instinctively.

Love that I've seen this thread

ScentOfAMoomin · 25/02/2025 17:19

When I had to learn shorthand to speeds of a minimum 100 wpm I used to transcribe any conversation I had into teeline in my head. Like imaginary drawing in the air - I also did this with song lyrics while singing along, and it paid off, and nearly 40 years later I still have perfect shorthand which I use every day.

Horrace · 25/02/2025 17:20

There are many of us that have weird counting habits/rituals.
Now I know there are some tribes, maybe in the Amazon who don't count or don't count more than 2 or 3. It's not something they recognise.
So I wonder if they have any odd rituals that give them comfort instead.
And I don't mean licking toad venom 🤣

Winterscoming77 · 25/02/2025 17:20

I can’t do one thing at a time. So if I’m doing the dishwasher I’ll empty a few things, then tidy a shelf, the empty the bin then back to the dishwasher then clean the sink then tidy a cable it’s infuriating in some ways but now I’ve just accepted it. It all gets done but not in any order.

I made words out of other words on repeat in my head. Think this is from being a child with no phone sitting reading signs and being bored or worried at the doctors.

I’ve taken a blanket to my reclining seat cinema for years.

I also say silly things to magpies. I know about the superstition but I'm not superstitious, but I think I do this because it's cute. No matter how many magpies there are. I say things like "Have a nice day Mr Magpie" etc. One day I said it to one solitary magpie and said "Have a good day with Mrs Magpie. Or Mr Magpie if you're in a gay marriage".

I also talk to magpies. My DH thinks I’m barking mad. On holiday I said “Bonjour Monsieur Pie. Comment va votre famille?” DH ask why the hell was I talking in French to magpies. I told him that they’re French magpies, so they won’t understand English.

I talk to my car. It is called Little Car and is 22 years old. I often say, 'Come on, Little Car. We're going shopping'. or 'Thank you. Little Car for getting us home safely'. I also have my childhood teddy bear, Edward, now 70 years old and lives in my bed. Sometimes I take him to choir practice hidden in my music bag. I have always been good at spelling because I close my eyes and 'see' the word written out inside my eyelids.

Raahh · 25/02/2025 17:51

I always 'bless' the dog when he sneezes, whether in the house, or out and about. I was in the park once, and a bloke over heard me and laughed. I was very put out! Grin

Raahh · 25/02/2025 17:54

And my daughter has realised that we are probably the only family that refer to the reduced section in the supermarket as the 'eat or die' section, after she was with her friends and called it this , and they looked at her like she was nuts. Grin.

I hold my thumb in my fist when Im sleepy - my mum said Ive done it since I was a baby.........Im 52 😳

Omg same here! But I do it when I'm anxious, in a hurry etc. I was clutching my thumb in my fist when I was first born.
Is it just one hand? Which one? And is it your dominant hand or not?

NormasArse · 25/02/2025 18:02

If I have an itch, I say “Itchy” out loud. I didn’t realise I did it until DH mentioned it. Now I know I do it, I’ve realised I say it every time, regardless of where I am.

We call it the aisle of inspiration. We even have a song about it.

If I wiggle or scratch a digit on one side, I have to match it on the other or I feel wonky. I suspect this is in fact quite common but I’m posting it here to find my fellow lopsided mumsnetters!

I also never got over the childhood dislike of stepping on cracks on the pavement. If I do step on one out of necessity then I will have to find another one to even the other foot up 😂

I still cringe if I step on cracks! Dd and I used to hopskotch partway into town to avoid them on the paving slabs! I also still cross my fingers going over 3 manhole/drains and under signs.

So many of you need even numbers but I odd numbers so the odd one gets allocated to me.
Is there really no one else that requires odds?

Me! Well, ish. Everything has to be a multiple of 3. I like it best when it’s also odd.

I do this too, silently thank my car for safely getting us around. I don't tell it where it is we're going in it; perhaps I should.
I get emotionally attached to anything; car, appliance or electronic devices that have been in use for a long time, and have served us well.
I feel sad when anything has to finally be thrown away/discarded.

My DD says it's called anthropomorphism, which I'm relieved to see is a natural human tendency, similar to feeing a sentimental attachment to a blanket or believing a good luck charm does bring good luck.🍀
That's lovely taking your dear old Teddy with you and I too have the ability to close my eyes and see how something is spelled, have always been good at spelling, now Google does it for me 😬
