Did you name your child after anyone...famous/who you admired/who inspired you?

Just read a sweet comment on The Times website saying that they named their daughter after Roberta Flack (who's just passed away)...

My daughters middle name was inspired by Yuri Gagarin's wife Valentina - He was ace, such a winning smile and his missus supported him big time. She was also mates with another Valentina - the first woman in space.

My big lad has a middle name - Rocco - we absolutely loved Madonna and that's the name of one of her sons.

I remember saying at the time that it would be a reminder of when we were young and liked music etc.

How amusing it is to see that 20 odd years later, that same boy absolutely loves Madonna...saw her last year at the 02. Twice.

Tell me there are Justins (Bieber), Harrys (Styles), Amy's (Winehouse), Sorchas (Ronan), Hermiones (Granger), Zadies (Smith) etc etc out there...anyone wanna own up to giving a child's name bc of one of their heroes?

Didn't name after anyone, but I gave my youngest a middle naming meaning Justice, because I was in labour with him at the same time as my brother was in court, winning his case. Though my brother did want me to name him after the judge Grin

Our daughter's middle name is after a character from my favourite book series. I love it!

My Wilf is named after Wilfred Owen the WW1 poet. He chose to go back to the front to fight after injury and was killed exactly a week before the end of the war. His mother got the telegram on Armistice Day as the church bells rang out... 💔 💔

I was named Kim after Kim Novak

GrumpySparkler · 25/02/2025 05:52

DH was the one who suggested both the names we gave our boys.
Unbeknownst to me until quite recently, he only suggested them because they're his favourite gaming characters 😂

1992 child hear, named Yasmin wonder which popular 80s pop stars wife I was named after 🤣

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 25/02/2025 06:18

Yep. Named my kid after a "Carry On" actor. 🤣🤣🤣

I knew a baby Shania twenty five years ago.

A work colleague named her son after her favourite singer, and her daughter after the actress people said she looked liked.

Eldest has the female version name of my ex DH favourite football player. It was on my shortlist anyway.

mistymirror · 25/02/2025 06:27

My middle name after my Mum's favourite film character, Eliza Doolittle.

gettingthehangofsewing · 25/02/2025 06:40

I was named after a famous singer and my sister was named after a song .

I named my eldest after a character in my favourite book, her middle name is my sisters name (who died young).

My middle child was named after my husbands aunt and grandmother.

My youngest, I worked in a nursery when I was pregnant and there was an adorable child with that name and I loved it so used it for my son. Weirdly three years later I took my son for his autism assessment and his namesake was there for the same appointment.

My daughter is Miranda, because she was born in Bermuda, where the shipwreck in The Tempest is supposed to be set.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/02/2025 07:36

My mum got my name from the female half of a pop duo (so not exactly 'named after' her but that's where my mum first heard the name).

NeedWineNow · 25/02/2025 07:46

I was named Karen after my mum’s favourite actress and dancer Leslie Caron. Mum wanted my name spelt in the same way but the Registrar refused saying it wasn’t the correct spelling hence me having the common (and now much maligned) usual spelling.

The French used to have a list of names. That meant no 'Chardonays', 'Paris'', 'Brooklyns' 'Famagustas' or other such nonsense names.
I like the French.

urghhh47 · 25/02/2025 08:08

No prizes for guessing my name - I'm named after the lead female character in the film Dr Zhivago. My mum had a crush on Omar Sharif and still watches the whole film regularly!

BountiesAreUnderrated · 25/02/2025 08:12

My Dad named me Petra after visiting the ancient city in Jordan...but also because he liked the dog of the same name off Blue Peter 😂 I wanted to name my DS after Roger Federer but DH absolutely vetoed it.

That’s a lovely name and a lovely film. It was on a few weeks ago and I had a fabulous time watching tucked up on the sofa wallowing on a Saturday afternoon! I’m with your mum on Omar Sharif 😁

MinnieCoops · 25/02/2025 08:20

My friend was called Geraldine after the woman her dad was shagging.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 25/02/2025 08:21

I wanted to name DD after Minerva, the Roman Goddess of wisdom and war. Alas, I was overruled. I also asked for Cleo after the famous Egyptian queen, again, overruled. We went with one of the most popular names of the mid-2000s instead 🫤.

Kirsty after Kirsty Maccoll.
Loved her music and love the name!

NewsdeskJC · 25/02/2025 08:31

Also middle names from our siblings

TulipTuesday · 25/02/2025 08:34

When I was born the name they’d picked out didn’t suit me apparently. However a few days later my mum read that her favourite footballer had had a baby daughter. So I ended up with the same first and middle name as her.

My eldest DS is named after the guitarist in a band DH and I both liked.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 25/02/2025 08:39

Neither are naked after anyone, but one of my boys is called Hugo and I've loved the name since The Vicar of Dibley.
