How often do you wash your hair?

For me, it's great for one day, okay for the second but by the third it's ready to cook chips on!

Today is day three and I haven't washed it as off to the gym so it feels a bit pointless, but it feels (and looks) a bit grim. Can’t decide if I should wash it before bed but then tomorrow will be day 2 surely! I'm also trying to keep my newly dyed hair to stay the right colour rather than it fading too quickly. It also takes ages to dry so that’s also a pain.

Anyone else playing hair gymnastics trying to make it look decent for work/going out etc?

Once a week.

EveryDayisFriday · 23/02/2025 21:28

3x a week. It takes ages to dry and style it properly to look half decent, I'm not doing that every day.
Usually Sun/ Tues and Fri after the gym.

LillyPJ · 23/02/2025 21:28

About every four days. My hair's got drier over the years and I'm not too bothered about style!

Every day, wash and blow dry after my shower. Doesn't take long and I feel so much better for it. Today I slept in, it being Sunday, and didn't wash my hair and all day every time I look in a mirror I think I look ghastly! I have thick curly hair and it doesn't get greasy so much as wayward.

pulter · 23/02/2025 21:31

I do a proper wash once a week, but I wash the front roots daily so it all looks freshly washed on the surface. It is long (just past bra strap) and thick, and I always wear it tied back.

catin8oots · 23/02/2025 21:32

I used to work with horses so was always dirty and under a hat. Washed daily in the shower. Necessary.

Now I work from home. Wash once a week, rest of the time clipped up. Not greasy, not dirty. Doubled in thickness and length.

Have a full head of highlights and a decent cut every three months

GG1986 · 23/02/2025 21:32

Every other day. Gets greasy really quickly and I have fine hair.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 23/02/2025 21:35

I gave up trying to make my hair look presentable a long time ago. No matter what I do to it, or how nice it looks when I set off anywhere, it runs riot.

I wash mine once or twice a week... but I can get away with it, as I usually wear a hat, and I work with men, who don't notice (or at least comment) that my hair has lost the plot. It doesn't see a hair dryer unless I go for an annual haircut, but I've recently taken to wrapping it up in a towelling turban, which- especially when paired with my new pyjamas- amuses me by making me look like I have escaped from early episodes of Call the Midwife.

Chasingaces · 23/02/2025 21:35

Usually every 4-5 days but my hair is really thick and probably takes 4hrs+ in the winter to dry and I hate blow drying so I can't do it in the evening as I'd go to bed with wet hair

PLHJ84 · 23/02/2025 21:37

Roughly every 6 days (could be 5 could be 7) my hair is very thick but sheds lots. My daughter gets quite greasy hair (but she always touching / styling it) was washing it every 2-3 days got her to go a bit longer & hers is starting to look better too.

Nestingpiglet · 23/02/2025 21:42

Every day. I shouldn’t bother, because it’s very thick and quite long and all I ever do is shove it up in a ponytail. But I got into the habit when I had short hair as a teen and now I don’t feel clean unless I wash it in the morning. Often just tie it up wet in a bun with three pre-schoolers to look after, so it would probably be much better aesthetically if I could crack the shampoo dependence.

CrossCountryWoosh · 23/02/2025 21:49

As little as possible. 🤣

Until recently, dry shampoo on day 3 and on day 5 would look like it needed a wash.
In the last few weeks though, it needs properly washing after 3 days. Not sure what's going on but I don't like it.

I can't wet my hair without washing it though because otherwise when it dries it looks like a grease ball.

Patterncarmen · 23/02/2025 21:56

Twice a week. I have fine, slightly wavy hair, and more than that makes it too dry. Only use a spray in conditioner so it doesn’t get weighed down. My hair is much better since I stopped washing it every day. Getting a really good cut also makes a big difference.

dobbyisfree33 · 23/02/2025 21:56

Every day. It actually doesn't look that bad on the second day, I could probably get away with it as it doesn't look greasy but it just feels ugh to me. It's kind of itchy and makes my whole head and face feel oily. So I just wash it daily when I shower. I wish I could get over the icky feeling because it takes so much time and looks bang average either way 😂

If it's a weekend and I'm going on an early dog walk or something like that I just stick a hat on until I get home.

EdnaTheWitch · 23/02/2025 21:56

Usually once a week, very occasionally twice.
I use a salt & sulphate free shampoo & conditioner (NYK1), and don’t use any styling products etc. Not sure if that makes a difference 🤷🏻‍♀️

Gottogetoutofthisplace · 23/02/2025 21:58

I have extensions which take a long time to dry and am pretty rubbish at styling, so I used to wash it just once a week - but am now doing it twice a week as part of an effort to be generally more groomed and put-together.
Interestingly, it starts to get greasy and dirty-feeling after just 2-3days now, rather than 5/6 - so I now feel even less groomed, with double the effort! 😅

WhatTheFuckIsThisNow · 23/02/2025 22:00

I've just finished growing my grey hair in, from dyed black. When it was full of dye and in awful condition, I had to wash it daily - it got greasy so quickly despite being so dry. Almost as if my scalp was overcompensating for the lack of moisture. Now it's in fabulous condition and I wash it twice a week, very occasionally three times. It never looks oily and is so manageable. Growing it out was one of the best things I ever did.

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 23/02/2025 22:01

Depends on which shampoo I use, weirdly.

Every other day with TRESemmé but every third day when I use Redken, which I prefer.

helpfulperson · 23/02/2025 22:30

Roughly once a week or sometimes less.

Fifthtimelucky · 23/02/2025 22:51

I wash mine 5 days a week - after every session in the gym or swimming pool.

richardosmanstrousers · 23/02/2025 22:54

Every time I shower, which is most days. I can't work out how people shower without washing their hair, or even why they would. If I didn't wash my hair in the shower the heat and steam would cling to it and make it look horrid when I got out. It wasn't until I used mumsnet that I found out people don't always wash their hair as part of their shower.

I don't have a shower, only a bath - it's easy to keep your hair dry if you're bathing not showering!

PickAChew · 23/02/2025 23:08

Mine is thick and wavy and not particularly greasy but my scalp gets angry f I go more than a couple of days. When it was really cold, last month, I went 3 days, a couple of times, as I just couldn't face washing it then feeling cold. I was rewarded the week after with a head full of itchy, scaly spots.

Shower cap. It's a simple invention but does the job.

One bonus of ageing is less greasy hair.
