I work pt in a pub and have been left to lock up for the first time & no one showed me what to do or left instructions so assumed it would be straightforward. The only keys I've found don't work & I can't get hold of the manager or any other staff members by phone or text/whatsapp. WTF do I do?!

I can't leave it unlocked it's a busy town centre location but have work elsewhere at 9am and should have been home an hour ago Sad

Tell him next time you’ll just leave it unlocked! And insist he gets that lock sorted, so that you or some other poor sod doesn’t have this problem again.

AlienAlz · 19/02/2025 22:35

Brilliant. But at least you know exactly how organised they are. Establish your boundaries, use the job.

OnTheBoardwalk · 19/02/2025 22:41

A pub I used to work for many many years ago had to have named individuals for key holders and 2 people on site locking up

they got robbed when one person locking up (seemed dodgy to me) and insurance wouldn’t pay them out.

Luddite26 · 19/02/2025 23:40

I'm glad you are sorted @lechatnoir bet you are shattered tonight. Hope all is well on your next shift.

recipientofraspberries · 19/02/2025 23:46

Women are left alone to lock up pubs and bars all the time. Yet another example of it being a complete farce that men are protectors.

This ^^
if anyone is in this situation again, call the local police and they will contact the keyholder, all licensed premises have to have them.

What a nightmare OP.

Can tell plenty of you have never worked in a pub though.

Why can't a woman lock up? The last pub I worked in had 7 female staff (both managers were women) and 2 guys. Are you saying the guys should have been on till close every single day of the year??

Also if you're old enough to work in a pub you're old enough to lock it up. 18 is an adult.

And as for make sure you get paid for the extra time...hahaha. As if 😂

Do you think you're special because you worked in a pub? Ok...

Women shouldn't be left to lock up a pub at night alone in this social climate. Do you watch the news? Do you know how dangerous it is to be a lone woman at night?

Yes, 18 year olds are adults, but no one should be expected to do a job with no explanation- particularly a job with such responsibility!

So, you have never been a manager, you have never checked out the law surrounding hospitality and you are happy to be taken for a dick financially?

I wouldnt be laughing if I was you.

Exactly. I worked in a pub part time from the age of 17 to 23. The owners (and before that when they were managers) always locked up, apart from on their night off. No-one did it on their own and certainly no-one without keys who hadn't been shown what to do. Even in an office there are health and safety lone working rules. I checked recently whether a new member of office staff was able to lock up, had keys and was ok on her own and she's 25. You don't just bugger off.

Keep trying to ring people if you can

Ooh the irony! If you RTFT then you’d see this poster had already explained her haste in posting!

uglyjessie · 20/02/2025 18:00

Will you at least get paid until 2am?

That was thoroughly unprofessional of the manager

I wonder what their Head Office would think about this

BlueFlowers5 · 20/02/2025 18:09

Ring the Police to get the keyholder out.

Well, finally heard from the manager at 4pm. A text with lots of annoying emojis:

"lol! At least you know for next time."

WTAF!! I did reply that actually it wasn't funny and I didn't appreciate being left to lock up without prior warning or instructions & what turns out to be a tricky lock with a knack. He did then have the grace to apologise and said he was sorry he should have come in or asked one of the other staff members to lock up.
I mean it's not ideal but I like the job and don't want to leave so unless there's a repeat, it sounds like it's all been shrugged off and I'll have to lump it if I want to stay!

Did you also tell him that there won't be a next time?

Call the cops. If the idiots can't show you how to lock up properly, they deserve to be pestered.

madaboutpurple · 20/02/2025 18:32

Lone workers should not lock up. There have been cases where pub staff have been followed home and forced to hand over the keys. Next time insist someone stays with you and books you a taxi home. You could mention that you could be a target for thieves and they could force you to handover the keys .Your manager needs to show all the staff the locking up procedure .

So presumably you've gone over your scheduled hours? I would be expecting to be paid for any extra time.

I'm a pub landlord and there's a knack to the lock on ours, hence why I lock it myself.

If you were there alone, or with an additional member of staff, did either of you hold a personal license to sell alcohol? If not that's against the law. There should always be a licensee on site, you can serve alcohol but only with them on site.

So many red flags. I would also never leave a female staff member alone to lock up, it's peak time for theft

soupyspoon · 20/02/2025 20:05

What does he mean by at least you'll know for next time, given that you couldnt actually lock up conventionally, so you dont actually know for next time.

Waterweight · 20/02/2025 20:18

Traceysgoingtobelivid · 19/02/2025 01:38

You can’t stay there all night and even if you did you wouldn’t be able to stop an intruder, you could end up in a very dangerous situation so you need to go home and leave it unlocked, it’s management’s responsibility they should have shown you how to lock up and frankly I’m presuming you are a woman they shouldn’t have left you alone to do that anyway.

This ^ we had a situation at work once where we (the staff) were left to lock up as management wasn't on

We fucked it up as we missed the timing on something but worst still shortly after we left somebody actually showed up to the complex & we very narrowly avoided running into them (we would have still been there had we put in More effort/gone back to check)

Security called us to check they hadn't broken in as they found ours unlocked & we were all gone but had to admit we had never locked up before & was actually surprised there was a break in.

So moral of the story call the manager again or a lock smith & request they come out & sort it/lock it (sending the bill to the manager for not answering) & head home ASAP

You've done all you can

Sparklybutold · 20/02/2025 20:27

@lechatnoir are they paying you for the extra hours?

Also, there should be a risk assessment for lone working - has this been done? Any induction? It was a really dangerous situation which you persevered with regardless - so good on you.

Reallyneedsaholiday · 20/02/2025 22:09

Well.done OP. Tell them you won't lock up alone until you have all the relevant training, and enjoy the job. Hospitality is great fun.

OnTheBoardwalk · 20/02/2025 22:21

diddl · 20/02/2025 18:20

Local police will always contact and phone the nominated key holders for licensed premises if there’s an issue

Ring the Police to get the keyholder out.

Yea because there are ample police now a days and absolutely no crime for them to attend to at pub closing time!

Kirstk · 21/02/2025 03:09

If you've bolted it from i side, how is it going to be opened from outside?
