I work pt in a pub and have been left to lock up for the first time & no one showed me what to do or left instructions so assumed it would be straightforward. The only keys I've found don't work & I can't get hold of the manager or any other staff members by phone or text/whatsapp. WTF do I do?!

I can't leave it unlocked it's a busy town centre location but have work elsewhere at 9am and should have been home an hour ago Sad

Thank you all for helping/hand holding!

I'm glad you made it out

There are meant to be designated staff to lock up not just anyone who works there

At least you were responsible about it all

Make sure you get paid for the extra time

CalicoPusscat · 19/02/2025 02:17

You poor thing, hope you have a cup of tea when you get home.

I remember getting LOCKED into a pub as they forgot I was there. I was sitting quietly with my laptop. I started yelping immediately when the lights got turned off so escaped fairly easily!

She's out now, thankfully

There is a reason that being a keyholder is a specific role in jobs like that and surely there is a safety protocol regarding locking up in pairs! How awful that the other employee did that to you.

PyongyangKipperbang · 19/02/2025 02:42

Are you part of a chain? If you are, contact your area manager and tell them what happened. This kind of shit is exactly why I left pub management. My job was as Support Manager to new GMs. What actualyl happened was I was left to do their job for them andt they did fuck all. Appalling training for new staff (as in, none at all), shitty supervisors who work dodged etc and a manager who doesnt give a shit if they had a compentent assistant who would do it all for them. I ended up acting as assistant manager and doing it all. Fuck that shit.

Also, being a key holder needs extra pay, its added responsibility. Go to Area (easy to find out, call head office and ask, they will tell you and if you dont mind PMing me the company I may be able to find out for you), and drop them all in it, including the manager. Yes you will probably lose the job but hospitality places are crying for people like you, so you will get another job within the week.

How will anyone get in if it's bolted from inside? Not really your problem now though!

oakleaffy · 19/02/2025 03:14

@lechatnoir That's soo bad! They should have shown you which key fitted which lock and made sure you knew what to do.

Some locks are very stiff and awkward and there is a ''knack'' to them.

Glad you got out ok.

GivingUpFinally · 19/02/2025 03:21

Make sure ypu get paid for the time ypu were there after hours@!!

LoudSnoringDog · 19/02/2025 03:31

Sound like a shit employer leaving you alone to lock up

1smallhamsterfoot · 19/02/2025 03:54

Yeah they deffo shouldn't have done that hopefully they're in for a bollocking when noone can get in tomorrow

Bjorkdidit · 19/02/2025 05:10

How awful and shitty of your colleagues to just abandon you like that, especially when you've only been there 3 weeks.

You should have been shown how to lock up properly, put the cash in the safe and set the alarm. This can be hard to work out if you don't know how to do it as it's not easy/obvious.

I'd be uncontactable until 1 pm this afternoon as you have a legal right to 11 hours break between shifts so shouldn't be working again before then.

Luddite26 · 19/02/2025 05:19

Glad you are out. Interesting to hear what happens next....

Trainstrike · 19/02/2025 05:24

If you haven't signed a lone worker's risk assessment and you're working in a chain then I would definitely raise this higher.

cannynotsay · 19/02/2025 05:27

Woah how dare they do that! So unfair. Hope you're ok op x

This - I’d be more concerned for your safety if lone working. Most retail/hospitality roles have minimum staff numbers for a reason.

Zonder · 19/02/2025 06:03

That's terrible.

Will they be able to get back in now? Not that it's your problem.

Goandygo · 19/02/2025 06:09

It's a disgrace.
Hope @lechatnoir managed some sleep.
I'd be taking it further.

I thought this too! Some shit is going to hit the fan today - not in OPs direction though I would hope!

SparkyLauz · 19/02/2025 06:56

Oh dear sorry were in that situation!! But If it's bolted now from the inside how will anyone be able to get back in?

TheBestUsernamesAreGone · 19/02/2025 07:07

Can't believe someone thought they would just walk out and leave you to do something you'd never done before without at least asking you if that was ok.
I hope you've managed a decent night's sleep.
Please keep us updated.

That’s what we call ‘not her problem’ she’s done the bit she was asked & locked it. They
l have to call a locksmith or smash a window, serves them right.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/02/2025 07:12

I think it’s brilliant that you’ve dead bolted the door and left via a fire escape. Let’s hope they’re just as inconvenienced as you were. I’d also be ensuring that last night was your last shift.
