Anyone up - work in a pub and can't lock up don't know what to do!!

I work pt in a pub and have been left to lock up for the first time & no one showed me what to do or left instructions so assumed it would be straightforward. The only keys I've found don't work & I can't get hold of the manager or any other staff members by phone or text/whatsapp. WTF do I do?!

I can't leave it unlocked it's a busy town centre location but have work elsewhere at 9am and should have been home an hour ago Sad

What a nightmare OP.

Can tell plenty of you have never worked in a pub though.

Why can't a woman lock up? The last pub I worked in had 7 female staff (both managers were women) and 2 guys. Are you saying the guys should have been on till close every single day of the year??

Also if you're old enough to work in a pub you're old enough to lock it up. 18 is an adult.

And as for make sure you get paid for the extra time...hahaha. As if 😂

That's not to say that the pub management had read and acted on the small print in their insurance policy to ensure that a suitable person did the lock up though.

After all, an employee who's worked there 3 weeks and not been shown how to do it properly probably wouldn't be covered by the insurance either, whatever the their age or previous experience.

God knows. Like I said it was close to 20 years ago!

I was at 20, I don't think the company paid any attention to my age when making me a key holder, I'd already worked there 4 years at that point.

diddl · 19/02/2025 09:30

Presumably whoever wants to get in next will have to get in the way Op left.

I'm guessing fire doors can be opened from the outside although staff may not be able to do it.

They might also need to contact Op re how she locked up/get out.

Ok did they give you any keys or instructions?
Keep trying to ring people if you can

Literally the first sentence says they didn't leave instructions

Doggymummar · 19/02/2025 09:50

This was a terrible way for the other staff to behave. I used to manage a foreign exchange and a retail store, for insurance purposes there had to be two members of staff on duty at all times, including opening up and locking up. Noone should be left alone with the responsibility of cashing up and securing the premises. Surely this applies thirty years later? There is lone worker legislation that covers this.

lechatnoir · 19/02/2025 10:08

Thanks for all your concern. I got home safely and still not heard a thing! Whilst I wish there was no other way of getting in there is a second door that is locked when we call last orders so they can get in. Will let you know when I hear from the manager.

Sound like a shit employer leaving you alone to lock up

Yep
OP has been there less than a month as well.

My ex Inlaws were Publicans and, to my memory, no barmaid or man was ever given the responsibility to lock up. That was Management (my ex DH) who done that. It was also the time the lovely German Shepherd was let out the flat above the pub and had his free reign down in the bar area.
Do they still pay for a cab home OP ? You might drive, for all I know, but just curious now as the night shift barmaids were all taken home in minicabs, paid for by ex FIL (though there might have been a tax loophole there, but was nothing to do with Me)

BlokeHereInPeace · 19/02/2025 11:21

A half decent company will have a Lone Worker policy that should identify how they do their best to ensure the safety of, well, people working on their own. Doesn't mean that you are not allowed to be alone, but that they have made best reasonable endeavors to ensure your safety.

gotmyknickersinatwist · 19/02/2025 11:44

Who/where is the owner? If I was the owner I'd be furious with the manager.

Ohnobackagain · 19/02/2025 11:54

@lechatnoir just make sure you get your side across first, not about blaming others but if someone’s going to tell you you’re locking up with 15 mins notice and it being new to you, they have a responsibility to show you the ropes.

Andwhoisasking · 19/02/2025 12:19

I would report this. The licencee could and should lose their licence for this.

Very basic main door with deadbolt lock. The key seems to fit in the lock but just won't turn - my hands are sore I've been trying that long.

I'm really pissed off that I've been left alone & not given instructions. Might have to ring my son who will probably answer and ask him to wake his dad/my DH as he's not answering his phone. Ffs I've only worked here 3 bloody weeks as well!

Was it the manager/owner who left you or just another staff member? If so I'd be dropping them right in it and if the former I'd escalate it or leave

Hey, sounds tough! First, check if there’s a lockbox or another way to lock up. If you can, secure the till and any valuables. If nothing’s working, leave a note explaining what happened and lock up as best as you can. If you can’t reach anyone, just make sure to follow up with the manager in the morning. Hopefully, they’ll sort it out for you!

What sort of a crap AI name is 'ByCraftyLemonStork'?? 😂

I de-regged recently after years and years and then re-registered, it actually does suggest names like this now when you signing up! They’re like Reddit names.

buffyfaithspikeangel · 19/02/2025 15:58

@likerocksfalling I posted straight after that post,I was half awake and my brain basically posted what I read
No need to bring it up 100 posts later

Waiting for the mangers updates 😂

lechatnoir · 19/02/2025 22:12

Well, finally heard from the manager at 4pm. A text with lots of annoying emojis:

"lol! At least you know for next time."

WTAF!! I did reply that actually it wasn't funny and I didn't appreciate being left to lock up without prior warning or instructions & what turns out to be a tricky lock with a knack. He did then have the grace to apologise and said he was sorry he should have come in or asked one of the other staff members to lock up.
I mean it's not ideal but I like the job and don't want to leave so unless there's a repeat, it sounds like it's all been shrugged off and I'll have to lump it if I want to stay!
