Anyone up - work in a pub and can't lock up don't know what to do!!

I work pt in a pub and have been left to lock up for the first time & no one showed me what to do or left instructions so assumed it would be straightforward. The only keys I've found don't work & I can't get hold of the manager or any other staff members by phone or text/whatsapp. WTF do I do?!

I can't leave it unlocked it's a busy town centre location but have work elsewhere at 9am and should have been home an hour ago Sad

Glad you managed to lock up and eventually get home. What an absolute nightmare. Surely it should never be left to only one person to lock up at that time of night for health and safety reasons alone! They need to ensure no one person is ever left in that situation again.

RhubarbThumb · 19/02/2025 07:15

Need to know how they get in today!

LynetteScavo · 19/02/2025 07:21

I'm marking my place to see how they get in. I'm angry on your behalf that you were left in this situation.

ApolloandDaphne · 19/02/2025 07:25

Ant won't to find out how they get in today! Not your fault at all. The management are twats for leaving you to do this.

Motnight · 19/02/2025 07:27

Blimey! Well done on escaping, Op!

I'm done. Bolted from the inside and left via the fire escape which self closes/locks.

I also now have a set of keys and nog back in until Friday so bugger knows what will happen with those but I won't be dropping them off that's for sure! The whole thing was thoroughly stressful and I'll speak to the manager (who is about 10 & a prat) tomorrow. Aside from this & idiot manager who is rarely there, it's a great job I'd like to keep but not doing that again!

How are they going to get in if you’ve bolted from the inside?
Regardless of that whoever left you shouldn’t have left you alone after 3 weeks of working there and no training on locking up. The very least they should have done was call someone else in if they had to leave for an emergency. If there was no emergency they deserve to loose their job for this.

Another here who'll be watching for an update.

Presumably whoever comes in on Friday will be able to get in through the door with a Yale lock that OP left through, and will know to do so as OP will have contacted the manager. No need for a locksmith or start breaking windows.

But she bolted it from the inside so that it would be secure while she left through the fire door

rach7979 · 19/02/2025 07:49

If the door is bolted from the inside how will they get in?

What Yale lock? Who says the pub isn't opening until Friday?

Mumsnet is like a written version of Chinese whispers sometimes!

PullTheBricksDown · 19/02/2025 07:51

Lazy staff member who left you to it saying 'you'll be fine' because they fancied an early swerve should be in trouble now.

Break a window/call a locksmith/there maybe a side door management have keys to

Lj8893 · 19/02/2025 07:56

I hope the key holder that just left you to it gets in trouble!
This happened to me years ago when I was just 18 and working in a pub, I got left to lock up with no instructions. There was 1 door I couldn’t work out how to lock, and I had no idea about the alarm. Thankfully the area manager was doing some cctv maintenance at the time so happened to notice I was struggling and phoned me to talk me through it!

Why Friday? What yale lock?

MathsMagpie · 19/02/2025 08:01

Are you ok op?

IDontHateRainbows · 19/02/2025 08:02

I hope the employee who scarpered gets a shoeing, I fear they will blame/ scapegoat OP tho!

Bjorkdidit · 19/02/2025 08:04

Ah MN, the place where no door is secured by any more than a Yale lock and the only reason any door is ever locked is because the Yale automatically does it.

Mytattooisbiggerthanyours · 19/02/2025 08:05

OP is back in on Friday. The pub opens again today. Or can it, if everyone is locked out?

ArmySurplusHamster · 19/02/2025 08:07

That’ll be two members of staff the pub is replacing, I suspect.

Eh? In what way?

I'm hoping the OP is still in bed after not getting home til 2am.
I'm here for the update when it comes!

MotherTuckinGenius · 19/02/2025 08:10

I'd not be going back ~ bar jobs are pretty easy to come by and they sound like shitty employers.

In what way is it identifiable? Well unless she has changed her details I doubt there were thousands of employees in her situation last night.
