Anyone up - work in a pub and can't lock up don't know what to do!!

I work pt in a pub and have been left to lock up for the first time & no one showed me what to do or left instructions so assumed it would be straightforward. The only keys I've found don't work & I can't get hold of the manager or any other staff members by phone or text/whatsapp. WTF do I do?!

I can't leave it unlocked it's a busy town centre location but have work elsewhere at 9am and should have been home an hour ago Sad

Awful. You just know OP will take the flack for it as well. Find another pub job. They aren’t all bad

musicalfrog · 19/02/2025 08:11

Hope you got home OK OP.

RitaFromTheRanch · 19/02/2025 08:13

How stressful

I hope the key holder that just left you to it gets in trouble!
This happened to me years ago when I was just 18 and working in a pub, I got left to lock up with no instructions. There was 1 door I couldn’t work out how to lock, and I had no idea about the alarm. Thankfully the area manager was doing some cctv maintenance at the time so happened to notice I was struggling and phoned me to talk me through it!

Dear God, an 18 year old left alone to lock up a pub?! 😳

MoodySky · 19/02/2025 08:18

What a huge responsibility to put on you OP. I hope they're grateful!

crackofdoom · 19/02/2025 08:21

I'm not sure the pub management are at fault here- as far as they knew, they left their new employee to finish their shift alongside an experienced one. Who then fucked off early 🙄
I'm wondering if it was the right key all along- speaking as the veteran of many similar experiences (my job means I often get handed the keys to a premises with a blithe "I'll be along later tomorrow, you get started when you want!"), which means I've had several similar experiences of the fucking key just not working and being driven nearly to tears, only to finally work out if you pull the door towards you just the right amount and jiggle the handle at the same time it suddenly miraculously turns.

FrazzledHippy · 19/02/2025 08:28

I'm wondering how they'll get in today too if it's bolted from the inside, not that you should give AF about that OP. I hope once you've explained to management they're very apologetic AND pay you the overtime owed from being stuck there!

I too wonder this! I hope OP is not made a scapegoat!

I may have been 19. Not that it makes much difference.
But this was almost 20 years ago.

rainbowstardrops · 19/02/2025 08:35

What absolute bastards to do that to you without even bothering to tell you what you're supposed to do!
I know you said you like the job but I'd be telling them where they can stick it!

Same! They owe you an apology OP

Hey, sounds tough! First, check if there’s a lockbox or another way to lock up. If you can, secure the till and any valuables. If nothing’s working, leave a note explaining what happened and lock up as best as you can. If you can’t reach anyone, just make sure to follow up with the manager in the morning. Hopefully, they’ll sort it out for you!

Hdjdb42 · 19/02/2025 08:39

That's awful he did this. You must have been so stressed. Ring up and report to the manager, as you have the keys.

She's at another job now!

ssd · 19/02/2025 08:55

I hope the op has her phone switched off and earplugs in, so the management wont be able to get hold of her and they will be in a panic...same way she was left last night...

I was a designated key holder! Just not given any instructions on what to actually do!
