My beautiful old lab just died.

I know I sound pathetic but I'm so heartbroken, we all are. Our gorgeous old chocolate lab just died tonight. He was just the best boy. He just went to sleep in front of the fire and slept away, which I suppose is a comfort, but now I have to ring DD at uni and tell her. DS is 21 and absolutely distraught, our boy was his 7th birthday present. 💔💔💔💔

There is no pain like it, you have my utmost sympathies. Much love to your family.
What's your best memory of your lovely boy. X

I'm so sorry & what a shock for you all but what a lovely way for him to go. Snuggly and warm surrounded by love.
I hope your memories will bring you comfort. He sounds a beautiful dog x

PondWarrior · 17/02/2025 21:17

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 17/02/2025 21:28

It doesn't sound pathetic, op 🥺, I'm really sorry for your loss. He's resting peacefully and going in his sleep means he wasn't suffering.

May he rest in heaven, and may your family come through this difficult time ❤️

KerryBlues · 17/02/2025 21:29

So sorry. It's no comfort, but drifting off in his sleep is a lovely way to go.

Sooverthemill · 17/02/2025 21:29

I’m so sorry. It’s heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet. Our old boy died last year aged 15 and a half and I’m still sad

Dolambslikemintsauce · 17/02/2025 21:31

What a very fortunate way to have your gorgeous boy pass op.. We had our old husky pts last week. Anything but peaceful and perfect...
So sorry for your loss...

Wisheverydaywasfriday · 17/02/2025 21:31

Oh my poor love. It’s truly heartbreaking to lose them, you’ll never forget your special boy. I bet he had the most wonderful life filled with love, walkies and cuddles. 🐾🐾❤️

Stickytreacle · 17/02/2025 21:35

Such a terrible loss when we lose them, I had two chocolate labs and I miss them every day.
My wish is that my current animals slip away fed and happy in front of a warm fire when it's their time, just like your lovely boy. I hope you all have lots of lovely memories of him, take care xxx

moreironplease · 17/02/2025 21:36

I’m so sorry for your loss, my thoughts are with you and your family.
Rest well beautiful boy 🐾🐾

PaintCatsPaint · 17/02/2025 21:37

I’m so dreadfully sorry. It’s a sadness that goes to our marrow and it’s not pathetic at all. Sending strength.

Bonjovispyjamas · 17/02/2025 21:40

So sorry OP. I know what it's like to lose a beloved pet as many, many people do. I still cry over my cat occasionally who was put to sleep over 10 years ago, he'll always be in your heart ❤️

CatsandHedgehogsAreCute · 17/02/2025 21:52

You do not sound pathetic. Please dont think that. I am so sorry for your loss 💔 Loosing a pet hurts in ways none pet people dont understand. I had to have my cat pts 6 years ago, still makes me very emotional, she was my best friend. Please take care of yourself, take one day at a time.

Idolikeanicepieceofcake · 17/02/2025 21:53

Sending sympathy to you. Losing a beloved member of your family is so hard. I'm sure he had the most wonderful life with you all and knew how loved he was. As my late DF said to me when we lost ours - dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole ❤️

GenerousGardener · 17/02/2025 21:54

I feel your pain. I’m so sorry for you and your best boy, but what a lovely lovely way to leave. Warm, cosy, and surrounded in love for him. I lost my girl last October, I’m still grieving for her. Be kind to yourself and cry when you need to.

Just remember, we are all here for you if you need us. Xxxx

TheDevilWearPrimarni · 17/02/2025 22:01

Sorry you've lost your lovely dog. Pets are definitely family members.

Sebsaloysius · 17/02/2025 22:03

I'm so sorry. They are such a massive part of your family and when they have to leave you, the hurt is as powerful as any human loss.

I hope that in time, you will find some comfort that he slipped away in his favourite place, warm and safe.

Sending gentle hugs 💞

PearlClutzsche · 17/02/2025 22:05

I'm so sorry to hear about your lovely doggo 💐.

I have a much adored older dog myself, and dreading that awful day coming.

Peridot1 · 17/02/2025 22:09

It’s not pathetic at all. You are bound to be heartbroken.

As others have said it was a lovely way to go. Just drifted off while knowing he was safe and at home and loved.

We had to have our lab put to sleep a few months ago. We were luckily able to have a lovely vet come to the house to do it. Even though we knew it was the right thing to do we were still all heartbroken.

3rdtimeinflorida · 17/02/2025 22:10

So sorry for you and your family. Think of the lovely life I’m sure you gave him. He will know he was loved as he passed away.
Sending you big hugs x

Normallynumb · 17/02/2025 22:15

Oh I'm so sorry you've lost your boy
What a gentle way for him, leaving you from the place he knew and felt loved and secure without pain or fear.
It's such raw pain, but in time you'll look back and smile at his memory

EmeraldDreams73 · 17/02/2025 22:15

OP, I'm so sorry for your loss, he sounds like a wonderful dog. 🥰

What a beautiful way to go, though. Eventually that might be some comfort. Your grief isn't pathetic at all. They break our hearts when they go. X

crinkletits · 17/02/2025 22:16

I think we can all agree that your post and feelings are 100% devoid of pathetic ness. Full to the brim with sadness, these dogs get under our skin and give us unconditional love 24/7. They're never irritated by us and alway patient and loving. It's never long enough, and it's so incredibly sad. I pray every dog could be as lucky as curling up to sleep with the family that clearly adore his wonderful bones and drifting quietly away. Thinking of you x
