My beautiful old lab just died.

I know I sound pathetic but I'm so heartbroken, we all are. Our gorgeous old chocolate lab just died tonight. He was just the best boy. He just went to sleep in front of the fire and slept away, which I suppose is a comfort, but now I have to ring DD at uni and tell her. DS is 21 and absolutely distraught, our boy was his 7th birthday present. 💔💔💔💔

Not at all pathetic. We lost our dog a year ago and I still struggle with it, they are our family. So very sorry for your loss but I think one day you'll be able to look back and feel at peace with the way he went, having been through the process of putting a beloved dog to sleep I wish that will be the way the others go. He sounds like a very lucky, very loved dog Flowers

Chaseandstatus · 17/02/2025 22:22

I’m so sorry. Labs bring the absolute richest deepest love to a family, it’s heartbreaking to say goodbye.

MoonWoman69 · 17/02/2025 22:38

So very sorry for your loss. Losing a beloved pet is awful. As sad as it is, it was beautiful that they just fell asleep, at home with the ones they love. No trauma, just peace. That's all you could wish for when it happens 🌹🌈

LuluBlakey1 · 17/02/2025 22:41

It's awful when it happens. The pain and loss are because of all the love they give you and you them over the years. He had a lovely life with you and the kindest end- at home, in a place he was comfortable and lovec.

So sorry 💐

Am so sorry. Our doggies really are so special. Sending you my deepest sympathy.
He really did have the best way of starting his long sleep Xx

You're right, he did. Nice walk on the beach, dinner, some cheese (always a cheese fiend), then rest. We've been half expecting it because he's old for a choccy, but it's so shit that these beautiful creatures who bring us so much joy and love live for such a short time.

It’s the worst part of being a pet owner, I’m so sorry for your loss. 💔

Moonshine5 · 17/02/2025 22:42

Sorry 🙏

Moulook31 · 17/02/2025 22:42

So sorry. I know how you feel. We lost our thirteen year old lab a few years ago. We will always miss her. Hugs to you.

I think we can all agree that your post and feelings are 100% devoid of pathetic ness. Full to the brim with sadness, these dogs get under our skin and give us unconditional love 24/7. They're never irritated by us and alway patient and loving. It's never long enough, and it's so incredibly sad. I pray every dog could be as lucky as curling up to sleep with the family that clearly adore his wonderful bones and drifting quietly away. Thinking of you x

You're so right. I don't think he had a bad bone in his body, just love and patience. We all love him so much. I hope he loved his time with us. I've always had dogs and loved them all, but he was so special because he was my children's childhood dog and that is a very special thing.

My sister and I still can't talk about our childhood dog without crying and we're both in our 50s. Daft isn't it. DH has had to go and get DD for a night or two, she's devastated.

Oh OP - absolutely not pathetic. So sorry for the loss of your boy. I used to work at a vets & clients would often apologise for crying when their pet had been pts but I would always tell them there was nothing to be sorry for. Pets can become such a big part of our lives & bring such joy. Thinking of you all 🐾🐾🐾🐾❤️

TwoRobins · 17/02/2025 22:52

I'm so sorry 💐It's utterly heart breaking. I lost a cat in 2012 and another in 2015 and still cry for them now. Animals are the best. XX

Pinkbendyman · 17/02/2025 22:55

Oh I’m so very sorry for you all. It’s heartbreaking.
What was his name?

We lost Ozzy, one of our chocolate Labradors just before Christmas. We have his 11 yo litter mate brother still who is now being spoilt by us all.

Sending you lots of hugs 🤗

DancingDucks · 17/02/2025 22:59

His name was Hamish and he was the most beautiful boy. Absolute pain in the arse for the first year, as most puppies are, then just the loveliest dog ever. Labs seem to have perfected the look of being wholly deprived while living the life of riley. 💙

I’m so sorry for your loss 🐾🌈

LemonPanda · 17/02/2025 23:02

So sorry to hear this. It sounds like he had a wonderful life with you ❤️

thefirstmrsrochester · 17/02/2025 23:04

Sending love.

Your lab quietly went over rainbow bridge from their home, much loved, and in front of a comforting fire.

🌈🌈🌈

Pinkbendyman · 17/02/2025 23:05

Bless your Hamish, a lovely name! Chocolate labs are the best 💙

My 2 adult DS were devastated by the loss of our Ozzy - I printed off a gazillion photos of him (and his brother) and made a special photo album. They also chose their favourite photo each which I framed for them.

spiderlight · 17/02/2025 23:08

I'm so, so sorry. It's awful, it really is. What a lovely peaceful way to go, though. I hope that will eventually bring you some comfort.

DancingDucks · 17/02/2025 23:13

DH never had a dog before and really only agreed because I was miserable without one. But, of course, he fell totally in love with him too. You couldn't not, he's just so lovely.

It is not pathetic at all. My lovely big boy is my world!
RIP beautiful lab. Run free through the big park in the sky. He will be waiting for you. And when your day comes, he will come bounding towards you with a big soppy doggy grin.

YeOldeGreyhound · 17/02/2025 23:20

Oh my, what a beautiful way to go. With his family and in front of the fire (dogs do love a fire, don't they).

You are not pathetic at all. Your lad was family. Be gentle on yourself and allow yourself to feel the grief. It is normal.

Spendysis · 17/02/2025 23:35

I am so sorry op. Not pathetic at all they are part of the family

Zanzara · 17/02/2025 23:38

Former Mum to four and a half Labs here. My lot will take very good care of him, and especially my furry son, a Prince among hounds. x

MuttsNutts · 17/02/2025 23:48

I am so sorry for you all 💐

Hamish sounds like the best boy. I bet he had a great life surrounded by love and if he could have chosen how to go, it really doesn’t get any better than that.

Sleep well beautiful boy x

TreacleMoon123 · 18/02/2025 00:00

Awh I'm so sorry op. It's so hard to say goodbye 💔 Look after yourselves.
