This is very dull but also upsetting news (brace yourselves). My boss was abroad at the weekend and I asked him to bring me a big Toblerone from the airport. A 'Golden Caramel' Toblerone no less, can't get them where we live. He messaged saying he'd picked up two of them... result 🤩

I went into work on Monday and excitedly looked for them, he admitted he'd left them on the plane 😱😰🤬😭😭😭😭😭😭

Your boss is a ........

Jersey Royals flown in this morning, cooked with Dashi Kombu. They were delicious. They used to be available with the soil still clinging to them, so you just washed them and then cooked them. A few years ago they started to be sold already washed but some of the taste seemed to be slightly lost. These are hand picked and still have that wonderful earthy taste. I'm wondering how many meals I can have with these potatoes, curry and Jersey Royals, bolognaise sauce as well. Endless possibilities 😂

Looks lovely!
I've got some kombu in my cupboard! Can you just boil it then use the water to boil the potatoes?
What pie is that? I love pies. Steak and kidney is my fave X

According to James Martin you just add the Kombu to the water with the potatoes, which is what I did. Apparently the potatoes are grown using liquid seaweed as fertiliser, so it makes sense, as it’s the salty taste that’s needed. Another tip from James was that vegetables grown below ground should be started off in cold water and vegetables grown above ground should go into boiling water. Who knew? Not me! The pie was a Tesco meal deal and was chicken, bacon and leek, and was delicious. We don’t have pie very often, but now I’m quite fancying steak and kidney myself 😋
Waitrose has some lovely recipes using Jersey Royals and there is a lovely crab salad from JM. I love seafood! I’d better hurry with this one, while there is still an ‘r’ in the month.

Aww, thank you. Yeah, I'll deffo try the kombu with the new potatoes. Maybe I'll try the pie you had. I've not had one for ages. There often isn't enough meat or the meat is a bit manky? I used to eat fray bentos but I'd need to be drunk to do that now I think..Lol x

Umanresources · 14/04/2025 15:51

@BobbyBiscuits The pie had lovely chunks of chicken. I sometimes order from a place called Discount Dragon and the other week I got my OH a Fray Bentos pie from there, which was an all day breakfast. It was meant to be as a joke, but he said it was good and he had it for his lunch. 😂

Fray bentos all day breakfast pie?! Hehe, the mind boggles! I'm glad he liked it though. My dad used to eat them all the time in the 80s!
I'll try the chicken one, was it a 'finest' range? X

It was the Finest chicken, bacon and leek, part of the meal deal.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/04/2025 00:03

I googled...meat pie in a can? 🤢

Yes, you take the lid off with a can opener; and you've basically got a metal pie pan.

Awesome. I didn't know they did a meal deal for dinners? I only know about the sandwich etc one.

Used to get Tesco delivered for big shop. But over last year the delivery slots have been ridiculous. Like you have to wait three weeks for your shopping? While Sainsbury's have slots for the next day. Must be my area maybe?

Anyway I'll deffo try it. Hope you get a good steak and kidney one soon! X

Ooh we can get deliveries from Tesco quite easily, sometimes the next day. I’m near Manchester if that makes a difference, I don’t know. The finest meal deals are a main, a side, dessert and a drink (we have wine) for £12. Really good value. We don’t have them every week though.
@Mumtobabyhavoc oh the pie in a can has to be seen to be believed. The pastry looks awful when you take the lid off, very pale, but lovely when cooked, because it’s puff pastry. You have to remember to check the cooking time before taking the lid off as the instructions are on the bottom of the tin and you have to raise it above your head to read them, or tip it over! 😂
It’s another Jersey Royal day today with fish, peas, sweetcorn and asparagus.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/04/2025 17:57

I wonder about the filling.... good?
If so, it might be genius. 🤔

Let’s just say it’s not what it was, havoc. Many of us ate Fray Bentos pies back in the 70s and 80s, I suspect!

HildaTablet · 15/04/2025 19:11

It actually looks pretty good here - the contents may not be as nice as they appear, though !

We got as as far as TT demanding over $100 for DD to upload her various documents, so she exited and went with Freefile instead. I stuck with my paper return, and another DD did H&R Block. The weekend before taxes are due is my least favourite weekend of the year.

Onward to Easter! DD and I will head out to the supermarket on Thursday as we both have a few hours off in the afternoon. I think I'm going to do a slow roasted pork shoulder and potatoes au gratin, plus various veggies. We'll just buy ordinary russet / baking potatoes as they melt nicely in the gratin, or if I decide to roast them, they roast nicely. DD will make a lemon meringue pie, which will be nice and light after the dinner.

Thank you! Maybe Tesco have blacklisted us because we always try and ask the driver to bring everything into the kitchen?! Haha.

Your description of the fray bentos is bang on! 😃 Enjoy the jersey royals again. I need to get some! X

MissConductUS · 15/04/2025 20:28

I had to google "fray bentos". Pie in a can is an interesting idea.

Math, was your DD using the free version of TT? They'll make you pay one way or another. DH uses TT deluxe, which includes one state filing. DH is making potatoes au gratin for Easter too. We're going to my brother's house and bringing the potatoes and appetizers. What kind of cheese do you put in yours?

I've told work that I'm planning to retire in September, so they'll soon be looking for my replacement.

I used to love Fray Bentos pies, the lovely, soggy pastry. Not had one in decades. I think I'll live with the memory rather than trying them again now Wink
I have a rare free day tomorrow. I have a long list of chores, but plan a lie-in first.

We’ve decided not to have one for our Easter dinner, you'll be glad to hear. We bought a leg of lamb instead 😜

MissConductUS · 15/04/2025 23:39

I love lamb, but my sister-in-law usually does ham for Easter. That's okay; we all like ham, and it goes nicely with the au gratin potatoes.

I’ve just ordered more Jerseys and found a lovely recipe for smashed, Crispy-Roast Jersey Royals With Wild Garlic-Stuffed Chicken By Thomasina Miers. My wild garlic is ordered and we’ll have it with asparagus and tender stem broccoli.
Hilda we love lamb as well, but we usually wait until there are a few more for dinner. I’m not too fond of cold lamb, but I love the mint sauce accompaniment.

sueelleker · 16/04/2025 08:53

I've recently found a recipe for Baby Confit Potatoes.
750g baby potatoes
100ml white wine
1 bay leaf
25g butter.
Bring to the boil, and simmer with a lid on the pan for an hour, until the wine has evaporated.
Brown in the butter until crispy.
They're gorgeous-all creamy inside. I've used ordinary baby potatoes, but I bet they'd be even better with Jerseys.

Umanresources · 16/04/2025 11:31

@sueelleker I've got some white wine in. I'm going to give it a go tomorrow! OH well be away, so I can indulge myself. It does sound extremely tasty. I've got some seafood on order too!
