Dandy - very sad news about your DH's old schoolmate.

LollyWillow · 22/03/2025 10:27

Such a lot to catch up with!
Really sorry to hear about your DH's schoolfriend @DandyDandylion. So many are lost to addiction so young and it's so sad to see.

I am cheered by hearing about your Mum learning to swim @sproutsandparsnips! It has made me think that it was a very reasonable thing for me to do at the relatively young age of 60. I wonder whether my next madcap challenge will be? - actually I was thinking about starting yoga, so maybe I already know.

I hope you are enjoying your DSD's birthday weekend @MyrtleLion . What play did you go and see?

And finally, I love your photographs @Mumtobabyhavoc- so far this week you have given me two of my favourite things: fairy lights in trees, and trees covered in moss. I find mosses and lichens fascinating and magical.

I am decorating all day today. Finishing the new loft room and hopefully starting the new bathroom too. I'd like to get some of the bathroom done before the tilers come on Monday. Not least because the plumbers have told me that they will not fit the bathroom until I have painted the wall behind the towel rail. The plumbers are stern so I feel the need to be helpful and adhere to their timetable.
I'm quite looking forward to a day painting. I have lots of podcasts to catch up with and a new audio book and all the bending and sterching is good exercise.

MyrtleLion · 22/03/2025 12:06

I can't say which play as it will out the area where I live.

The film night was great and today I am starting on my new booknook after I catch up with MN. Then dinner out with DH and DSD. She will go home afterwards and DH and I will go to the pub.

Ah, of course. Sorry I didn't think.

Deathraystare · 22/03/2025 16:05

My goodness, the weather this afternoon! I was sitting in reception grumbling to myself because I thought the porters trollies were making a right din. I then realised it was thunder because I saw lightening too! It then poured with rain. Shame as it was quite nice in the morning!

Anyone else? Did you get wet in the deluge???

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/03/2025 16:07

I love a good thunderstorm. 😊

Ah, of course. Sorry I didn't think.

That's OK. If it was in London I might have said.

sproutsandparsnips · 22/03/2025 20:28

No rain at all here in south Wales. Glorious sunshine all round.

MissConductUS · 23/03/2025 18:36

The plumber returned yesterday to finish replacing the gas pipes. It took him a lot longer than expected, but it’s done now. He gave us a fixed price for the job, so the extra time didn’t cost us anything.

The big upright freezer in our garage was full beyond reason, so I took a couple of bin bags and cleaned it out. I’ve gotten into the habit of putting a date on almost everything I put in there, so that made it easier to pick what to bin. I found a few things that were from 2023.

DH and DS are doing burgers on the charcoal grill for dinner tonight.

Oh my goodness. That rain on Saturday night was atrocious. Thunder and lightning, torrential rain which poured into the living room over the bay window. We put towels on the windowsill and had to put a plastic box there to catch the rain. Thank goodness it only lasted for about half an hour but the box had about 2 inches of water in it by the end of the storm. It’s been very different today, we had a dry day, with a little sunshine. I’ve actually managed to get some tidying done and put things away in the conservatory, fold up laundry and even managed to get some art done, just a little sketching, looking at tone.
i did have a lovely time cutting up some boxes with my new electric scissors, so satisfying!

mathanxiety · 24/03/2025 04:24

Glad your pipe work got done, MissC. Is this the last of the refurbishment aside from the new windows?

DS is in town and survived an 8k run earlier. We're having gales tonight but the weather for the run was chilly and sunny.

I made some more apple butter and the apartment smells like a Hallmark Christmas Special.

Deathraystare · 24/03/2025 10:19

I am to be put on the naughty step today. Although on the rota it said I was in 7-2, in my diary it said 2-8 . I thought there had been a change. My boss rang at 07.24 to ask where I was!

I got into work at 08.10. (Blush!). Just checked all my other dates and times so I don't make the same mistake again.

MyrtleLion · 24/03/2025 11:36

We went out for dinner for DSD's birthday and it was another terrible meal. The chicken was burned and the potatoes too. No one asked us how our meal was, which usually drives me mad, because I would have raised it then, but I was so hungry I ate most of it. DH'S pudding was still part frozen. The alacrity with which the manager took 20% off the entire bill when we were finally able to complain, showed me this was not unusual. So we won't be going there again.

On Saturday we are going to meet DH's sister and her DD halfway between our homes (about 90 minutes drive) to celebrate his birthday. I am hoping my third meal out this month will actually be nice!

I've been plagued with feeling unwell for a day or two for about a month now. Today it is a sore throat and headache and I had tinnitus last night. I'll have an easy day today and hopefully feel better soon.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/03/2025 00:41

Myrtle, I'm sorry you had another crappy meal out. Here, if the server doesn't come by, I'd get up and find them or a manager, explain nicely and send it all back.
For the most part meals and service here are good. But, definitely not perfect all the time and as long as it's done politely, but firmly, a new meal is almost always given.
Death, that's a rough start to your day. 💐
Math, run sounds good! Buckle down for the storm. Yum. Apple butter.
Uman, yikes about the leak! 😱 I hope you can get it looked at.
Miss, is all the work done now?

I'm still dealing with a sinus cold and headache. Just home today. Managed a nap. Laundry and vacuuming done.

Being very British it's not my habit to complain and the servers were never around 😔

We will just boycott them.

I bought a new computer game yesterday called Figment and played about a third. It was very absorbing and only 89p so I am very pleased with it. I bought another two games for a similar price which were disappointing, so this was a good buy.

Deathraystare · 25/03/2025 14:45

Started today off well! Had a lovely veggie breakfast in a cafe nearby. Supposed to have fried eggs but the lady knows how much I love her scrambled eggs so gave me scrambled instead! Also a free square of brownie. I don't actually like brownies but it was appreciated!

Yesterday when I left work at lunchtime my colleague and I were talking about ice cream (she is lactose intolerant so we were discussing that) and I told her she had now forced me to get some! I got a pot of Haagen Daaz Vanilla (don't like the sickly other flavours) and an ice cream on a stick which was chocolate cherry (we had been discussing ice cream flavours and Cherry Garcia was my favourite despite no liking chocolate ice cream!)

MissConductUS · 25/03/2025 17:59

Math, the only other thing on list after the windows is fairly minor. Both of the kids rooms have carpeting. We'd like to take it out and put in LVP flooring like we have in the kitchen. I love it. It's very easy to clean and comfortable to walk and stand on.

Myrtle, we are in a pause for the work. I expect we'll get pricing on replacing the windows and sliding glass doors soon. I'm sorry you've had so many bad restaurant experiences recently. My husband worked in London for a year before we met and ate most of his meals out. He loves the city and said the Brits were lovely, but the food was not great. This was in the 1990s. He was in a nice neighborhood too, Knightsbridge (SW7 I think).

Havoc, I'm sorry your sinuses are still bothering you. I'm already taking lots of OTC antihistamines and Montelukast trying to head off the inevitable hay fever now that things are starting to grow again.

Our 22 year old tumble dryer started making ominous noises over the weekend, like something grinding while the drum was spinning. It's too old to get parts for, so DH researched replacements. The choice was somewhat limited as we have liquid propane gas and it's much cheaper to operate than an electric dryer. He found this:

Speed Queen DR7004WG Gas Dryer

Speed Queen is an interesting company. They do all of their manufacturing in the U.S. and are primarily a maker of commercial laundry equipment. You'll see their machines in most laundromats. Hotels, hospitals, etc also use them. They started selling machines for the residential market quite a while ago, and they share the same "built like a tank" design that the commercial ones have. They come with a seven year warranty and an expected life of 20-25 years of normal use. They're more expensive than an LG or Samsung, but less than a Miele or a Bosch.

Miss, are you on commission? 😂 Seriously, though, I'm impressed your dryer has lasted so long. Mine is of a similar age, older, actually. My mum bought it in the 90's and it's still going strong.

Heading out for an errand shortly. Temp is supposed to reach 17c today! 🥵 If so, it will feel super warm as it's a 10c increase.

MissConductUS · 25/03/2025 18:20

Havoc, the old dryer is a GE Profile model. We're astonished that it's lasted 22 years. The Speed Queen has a steam feature for removing wrinkles. I can't wait to try it and possibly reducing the ironing I have to do for DH's dress shirts.

I'm also looking forward to having a quieter dryer. As it's gotten older, the GE has gotten much louder, and the laundry room is right off of our kitchen.

Where I live has a fantastic restaurant five minutes from.the house by the river. We go there a lot and they know us. The food is amazing and we never get tired of it. The only downside is on a sunny day the tourists take over and we can't get a table.

Fortunately this wasn't the restaurant we ate at because we only go there for DSD. I might have to go to our favourite very soon to make up for the bad meals.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/03/2025 02:49

@LollyWillow pics for you. 🙂

Took dc sledding today. Conditions were gorgeous. Clouds parted. Temp went up. Trees were near the bottom along the road driving down. I've been admiring them every time we go.

I've been enjoying a long read catching up from my first delurk early in the thread. I love the little everyday details from different places.

The sun is shining today and I am off work so I've taken my dog for a walk on our local hillside/moor. I have also made a new recipe - a very easy refrigerated tray bake with malteasers in. I'm trying to summon enthusiasm for housework, especially as my in laws are calling round this evening. I also need to sort out our summer holiday properly. I've booked a gite in France but haven't organised travel. We will drive and go on the Eurotunnel but need overnight stops. Just another thing to do!

Deathraystare · 26/03/2025 11:34

Looks like another nice day today. I managed to get to work early and then my colleague came in! Yes I am supposed to be on 2-8! Just popped off to shops and got some things from TU at Sainsbury's - a suedette shirt, a lovely holey cardi and two pack of capri leggings. I had to come back to work early as had forgotten my watch and my phone was at work and I hate not knowing the time!

Deathraystare · 26/03/2025 11:41

@MissConductUS
re your husband not liking food in the UK, I think it depends on what food. I believe our roasts and breakfasts are good. Don't forget that in USA (If you are there or are you Canadian, sorry forgotten) they have a lot of things in their foods that are forbidden over here. Lots of addition flavourings like MSG etc. It always amused me reading interviews with American bands who whined about food in the UK and then went to Macdonald's or Burger King!! Also the bread in USA is full of sugar. Sorry not meaning to be rude but there are differences. I think British food has improved but a lot fo the Americans who complain have not even got here are are relying on old complaints from during/after the war (2nd). Obvs not your husband though as he actually came over here.

MissConductUS · 26/03/2025 13:03

@Deathraystare. I've asked him what he didn't find thrilling about the food in London and he said it was bland, every pub had the same menu as every other pub, and the vegetables were consistently overcooked to the point of being mush. There also wasn't the variety of ethnic restaurants that he was used to in New York. His favorite place to eat out was a little hole-in-the-wall Russian restaurant called Luba's that he could walk to from his flat. He said everything seemed freshly made (not frozen and reheated) and the service was better than average.

DH is quite a fine cook. He spent a semester in Paris while at university and took some cooking classes there, so he has very high standards. He does almost all of the cooking at our house. He eats very little bread, so I don't think he was missing the American version.
