I have just calculated that I spent £300 on takeout and Starbucks last month. Unbelievable. I'm definitely reeling it in. What's the average in your house ? I do think we eat out far too much

About the same for me. Quite horrifying as I'm not rich. I definitely need to cut back.

callingyouhomebirdie · 17/02/2025 10:06

I'm blaming convenience and laziness with a drop of picky eating from my son. Still ridiculous though

Same.... If I was told to spend £300 on takeout I'd say wise up I can't afford it lol

Let me think, for an average month...

Takeaways = £100
Coffee = £60

Drinks are more our thing...

Pubs/Bars = £250-300

Before covid, Friday night dinner out two or three times a week. Now less than that. We do have short breaks abroad when we eat out all the time and have coffee somewhere nice every morning. Rest of the time, no - I resent spending money on takeaways. I'd rather sit at a table and have my food hot. They're not a treat for me, and I try to keep things in the freezer for days when i don't want to cook. I also try to avoid chains like Starbucks or the pizza places and support local businesses when I do go out. I can afford to do that now I don't have to have vouchers for a whole family outing.

3WildOnes · 17/02/2025 10:10

We very rarely get take aways.

I probably spend about £50 in cafes/coffee shops a month.

Ted27 · 17/02/2025 10:12

I have breakfast out with friends once a week and go to Starbucks 3 or 4 times a week. So probably £25 - 30 a week.
Im a foster carer with a child not in school. This is the extent of my social life at the moment, it keeps me sane. So not about to give it up.

NewHeaven · 17/02/2025 10:12

I was spending similar amounts @callingyouhomebirdie . I controlled it by transferring £300 to my savings account on the next pay day. I've now set up a standing order for a set amount to go into a cash & separate stocks ISA monthly. It was hard at 1st but now I enjoy watching my £10k premium bonds grow. That money I would have previously wasted on coffees & takeaways, absolutely shocking 😲

wordywitch · 17/02/2025 10:13

We get one takeaway every 4-6 weeks so probably only about £30/month on average. We have a good coffee machine at home and both work from home so rarely get coffees, maybe £15/month on that. We spend more than a lot of people do on groceries though.

Speaking of coffees though, I paid £4.30 for a regular cappuccino last week and was shocked at that price. It’s going to be a fiver soon, bloody hell. Probably already is for the fancier coffee drinks.

DelphiniumBlue · 17/02/2025 10:14

I reckon we spend about £40 a week on either takeaways or eating out. That's me and DH, plus sometimes an adult DC or 2.
I never buy a takeout coffee, although Dh does sometimes, and rarely go to the pub these days. We'll get drinks at the theatre or event, but usually only one. So that's about 20 quid a round!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 17/02/2025 10:15

Literally never have take away food, only once in the last 30 years.

However, eating out every Sunday £50 - £100 a time.
Coffee in a cafe, never take away, £20 a month at most.

henlake7 · 17/02/2025 10:15

Nothing.
Im a hermit who likes home cooking!

Mumofyellows · 17/02/2025 10:18

Went through a phase of buying takeaway coffee and then realised how much money I was wasting and it horrified me! Now I just have a coffee on a weekend, usually a Sunday when we stop in a nice cafe on a dog walk. I take my own coffee and tea to work.
Rarely have takeaway food at home, maybe three times a year? I like cooking and if I don't fancy it I'd rather eat out.

MyFlightWasAwfulThanksForAsking · 17/02/2025 10:18

I spend £1.50 per week on a cup of tea on my office day.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 17/02/2025 10:18

I'd say we only get takeaways about once every couple of months costing approx. £50 a time. We do eat out though which I'd much rather do (though sometimes it can be twice as expensive).
I probably treat myself to a coffee about once every fortnight or so. £4 a go though! Would never order a cup of tea, so expensive for what it is.

buffyfaithspikeangel · 17/02/2025 10:20

Single
Approx £25 on a takeaway but every 3 months maybe?
1 coffee a month maybe with a cake so £7 ish

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 17/02/2025 10:21

We get a takeaway once a month £40. And it's when the kids are out otherwise would not be paying £80 for a takeaway for the whole house.

I do not buy hot drinks out, I take them with me.

I've just totted up an average spend on wine a week and it's a whopping £56 - not good for my bank balance or my liver/heart - may have to address this!

We don't generally go out unless its a special occasion

Yougetmoreofwhatyoufocuson · 17/02/2025 10:27

Total skinflint here, take my own hot drink in the van with me in an insulated mug, fill my water bottle at home, never eat out as it’s generally an expensive disappointment.

MaryGreenhill · 17/02/2025 10:28

Not a penny . I never buy food or drink out.
It's far too expensive and l worked really hard as a nurse in the NHS for 40 years to be giving my money to them and their ilk .

Kim82 · 17/02/2025 10:29

We don’t buy hot drinks when out and about so nothing spent there and we spent £85 on takeaways throughout January so not too bad for a family of 5. I have, however, just checked February’s total and so far we’ve already spent £144 on takeaways. Oops! No more this month for us now!

theteachesofleeches · 17/02/2025 10:30

I only buy coffees and take out if I am away from home - honestly - I make better at home/work. We eat out 2/3 times a month at nice places thou and that really adds up.

YesImawitch · 17/02/2025 10:30

We have one takeaway per month £25

Never buy Costa/ Starbucks as its vile
Cafe Nero if we go to the huge shopping centre which is about 4 times per year.

Interesting thread as on all the house price threads they go berserk if you mention coffees out etc

Xenia · 17/02/2025 10:31

People can spend their money how they want. I don't ever (and I mean 100% never in my whole life!) ordered a takeaway and these days may be once every 6 months go in a coffee shop (I don't drink tea or coffee so that is not every surprising). I am sure I waste money on all kinds of other things even just having a few minutes ago put the central heating back on for 3 hours as 4 of us adults are working from home in 4 rooms is probably a bit wasteful on a sunny day.

CareeringintoSpring · 17/02/2025 10:32

£0 on takeaway drinks - they seem such a waste of money to me. I wait until I'm somewhere with a kettle/coffee maker.

Not much on meals out or takeaways either as we prefer to spend that pot of money on extra holidays instead . A few meals out a month=a weekend away.

purplecorkheart · 17/02/2025 10:39

I rarely if ever get a takeaway coffee now. I have reduced my coffee intake due to its impact on my sleep so just have one cup a day. There is free coffee and tea at work so have it there during the week. At weekends I might meet friends at a cafe and have a coffee there.

Takeaways about £50 every three months. The takeaway options in my area are very limited.
