I have just calculated that I spent £300 on takeout and Starbucks last month. Unbelievable. I'm definitely reeling it in. What's the average in your house ? I do think we eat out far too much

I am probably unusual but I don't spend anything on takeaways or coffee unless on holiday maybe. I do buy a meal deal once in blue moon when my lunch plans go awry. It just seems like such a waste of hard earned money for bad food.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 17/02/2025 10:46

Is that a personal or household spend? Sounds a lot for one person.
On average I would say we have a takeout once a week (sometimes this is just me and DH, sometimes also for DS and his partner) and then I would eat out with a friend once a week. Eat out with DH/family maybe once or twice a month (more if we are away somewhere).

It would be very rare for me to get a takeaway coffee - only if I was on a journey somewhere. May do coffee and cake out with friend as our meet up instead of lunch.

Nannyfannybanny · 17/02/2025 10:48

Maybe once a month,go to the nearest town centre shopping, cake and coffee for 2, cost around £10. Take away, very rarely. Eating out,we used to go to a carvery monthly, went on my birthday in October (DD paid) and Valentine's day, just because we used to go on a Friday. They do smaller meals,I actually had a Starter and side,DH j20,, me a glass of wine, dessert,£40 we're pensioners. My DH is 7 years younger,so hasn't long stopped working. We will go back to taking a drink and snacks with us. Going to make Jami Oliver's blondies today.

BrownieBlondie01 · 17/02/2025 10:50

Yes loads 🙈 Not so much on the coffees, although probably get 1-2 a week, but I spend way too much on takeaways and meals out. They are so pricey now that I wouldn't be surprised if it's about £100 a week, for 1 takeaway and 1 meal out.

Always intend to cut back but I find it so hard, especially over the weekend where you're naturally out and about to eat more.

Carinattheliqorstore1 · 17/02/2025 10:51

Because we’ve been away on a city break this weekend, we have easily spent £300 on eating out (between 3 of us). Usually would say between £50-£100 per week as a family on a mix of take aways, coffees/teas, lunches and dinners out. I’m not feeling bad about it: we both work, and it’s what we enjoy. Other people have their preferences to spend money on. We don’t drink alcohol, smoke, run a fancy car

LadyKenya · 17/02/2025 10:52

I never buy tea, or coffee when out, and about. I am not paying for overpriced hot drinks. I have not had a takeaway for so long, I cannot remember when it was. It would have been fish&chips though, from my local, and I am not getting anymore food from there, as I was not impressed with the last meal I had from there, and it was not worth the money.

Neveragain35 · 17/02/2025 10:53

Very rarely get a takeaway- we had a chippy tea about a month ago and I honestly can’t remember the last time, possibly the summer.

Coffee out maybe every couple of weeks- if I’m out in town shopping. Occasionally we’ll buy lunch out at the weekend, usually just a sandwich or pasty. Might go out for dinner for a special occasion like a birthday.

Just realised that makes us sound very boring - we just live in a small town so there’s not that many takeaways!

Cynic17 · 17/02/2025 10:55

Never get takeaways. Pretty rare to get a takeout coffee, tbh - I prefer to sit in a cafe for an hour, & relax.
Drink the instant coffee provided by the employer when I'm at work.
So, definitely less than £10 per month.

Jeezitneverends · 17/02/2025 10:57

We don’t takeaway and I don’t buy takeaway coffee-I sound like a joy don’t I😂
However I probably spend £40/£50 a month in coffee shops-always independents, never chains.
i take coffee from home out and about with me though-I have a couple of really good travel cups

Cynic17 · 17/02/2025 10:58

I do eat out moderately often, but the question was about takeaways.
I am happy to pay for service, being in a nice location, someone else clearing up etc.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 17/02/2025 11:02

I probably spend around £100 a month on takeaway in a normal month which would probably be 2-3 takeaways and one meal out. food and eating out. I don’t get takeaway drinks often, not every month. Some months I do spend more if I’m off work or out in a new town etc.

HundredPercentUnsure · 17/02/2025 11:03

Takeaway pizza for 2 - £17 every 6 weeks or less
Coffees for me - what a treat! About £10 every 3 months
Coffees for DH - £3.40 x 4 a week
Lunches for DH - £5 x 3 a week
Meals out - family of 4, lunch out once every 3 or 4 weeks, £70 ish.

TyneTeas · 17/02/2025 11:04

This is scarily helpful in working out how much you spend on treats

Colinswheels · 17/02/2025 11:04

We rarely have takeaway food, probably once every other month and try to only order what we need so maybe about £35 each time. I used to buy a lot of takeaway coffee and sandwiches but have cut back and hardly ever do it anymore. We drove to the lake district recently and each had a service station coffee on the way there and back and it was the first one in ages.

We probably spend around £300 a month on eating out, pub etc though. Kids also have McDonalds more often than I would like!

Badbadbunny · 17/02/2025 11:09

Can't remember the last time either of us bought a coffee out. We may have bought one each from a motorway service station last year I suppose, or it could have been the year before?

We have a take-away (either a chinese or fish & chips) maybe 2 or 3 times per year.

If we're having a day out or a few days away, then we'll sometimes have a "meal deal" for lunch on the road, from a supermarket or Greggs, or sometimes a McD, KFC or Burger King for lunch, where we'll have a soft drink included, or if in a town, probably more likely a chip butty from a chippy!

But usually, we'll take drinks/snacks with us on days out and for journeys, etc., i.e. a flask of coffee, some multipack bottles of water and crisps, a few pieces of fruit, and maybe a couple of home made sandwiches.

I just can't bear to pay for things I could easily and cheaply make at home and take with us.

LindorDoubleChoc · 17/02/2025 11:09

No, almost nothing. We have a takeaway about 6x per year if that. I rarely buy takeaway coffees, go out for a coffee with a friend maybe once a week. Can't afford it!!

Motnight · 17/02/2025 11:10

We only get takeaways every few months. Mostly because they cost so much money and aren't that great. My DH was trying to persuade me to order a pizza the other week. It was going to cost £35 🤣.

Rarely buy coffee out, unless with a friend. Work in the office twice a week and sometimes buy a m and s lunch deal.

But I do eat out in restaurants once a week and that really adds up.

Comedycook · 17/02/2025 11:11

I never ever buy a takeaway coffee...I don't have a taste for it. I genuinely prefer making an instant coffee at home.

iamnotalemon · 17/02/2025 11:12

I don't really go to coffee shops as I don't drink coffee and refuse to buy a cup of tea out 🤣
I also don't drink alcohol but I do sometimes have breakfast or lunch out, or go into the supermarket for one thing and end up buying too much on rubbish.

I would be looking at that £300 a month as paying for a holiday - but it's up to you and whatever brings you joy I guess. (I'd rather the holiday).

Miaowzabella · 17/02/2025 11:14

I don't buy takeaways, unless you count the occasional prawn sandwich.

Dror · 17/02/2025 11:15

£12 once every few months on a takeaway

I don't drink tea or coffee, and hate pubs.

JaneFoe · 17/02/2025 11:18

No more than £40 a month, only due to regularly needing to stay overnight in a hotel. Without that would be max 1 takeaway so £20ish.

TheElvesLongSleeves · 17/02/2025 11:27

Nothing now on food, maybe 10 on drinks?
Used to have takeaway 2x a month, sometime 3x, but gave up after covid when I ordered kebab and got grand 3 pieces of chicken. That was the last drop afyer previous 2 disaster takeaway as well. They all had good reviews!
I understand the costs rocketed fpr them, I do, I try to support local, but I wasted 3x money on absolute rubbish food. Done. I can cook well.
I get very occasional coffee or smoothie, but has to be some good roast as a treat

CorduroySituation · 17/02/2025 11:28

Very very rarely have takeaways as there is limited choice and quality around here (rural Scotland). I think the last time was last year when I had an op and wasn't very mobile and DH was ridiculously busy with work. It was disappointing and we haven't bothered since, honestly a ready meal from the coop would have been better and much cheaper.

I have coffee/cake or brunch with friends around 2/3 weekend out of 4, so around £30-£50 per month on that. Local cafe is still pretty reasonable at around £2.70 - £3 for a nice coffee.

DH will get a coffee or soup when out and about maybe once per week.

We have a decent machine at home so most morning coffees are at home ( we both wfh most of the time).

FastFood · 17/02/2025 11:33

I go to my local coffee shop everyday, I stay in so its technically not take away. Basically £3/day so around £85 a month.
That's it, i don't order food.
