Do you spend much on takeaways including coffees etc

I have just calculated that I spent £300 on takeout and Starbucks last month. Unbelievable. I'm definitely reeling it in. What's the average in your house ? I do think we eat out far too much

DH £30 per month on Indian takeaway.

Me, almost £0, occasional Costa if I've tagged along with DH when he has an appointment at the optician/hospital/dentist etc and I'll sit in the car with a coffee.

Once in a blue moon, maybe £20 ish on a chippy if we are near a fishing town with a proper fish&chip shop. Generally though I prefer my own home cooking to takeaways.

Parker231 · 17/02/2025 13:17

Takeaway meals - rarely if ever as don’t like them. However DH do eat out at least twice a week and have coffees out several times a week.

Boope · 17/02/2025 13:19

I'm not mean in general but buying takeaway coffee seems quite a luxury so I've never bought one .
Once a month I might have coffee in a cafe with a friend.
Takeaway maybe 3 times a year.
On holiday we'll eat out at restaurants every day.
I'm retired now but all my working life I took packed lunches and either a flask or made drinks at work.

Rockingroll · 17/02/2025 13:22

We haven’t had a take away since last October and rarely eat out which is a new thing as it was always something we did at least a couple of times a week

I probably meet a friend for coffee a couple of times a month, so £10

out for lunch maybe twice a month max, so £50 tops

dinner with friends once a month £30-40

dinner with DP once a month - £100

probably spend a couple of hundred a month in total. We used to try and keep it to £150 a weekend which is utterly ridiculous

TheSidewinderSleepsTonite · 17/02/2025 13:42

We used to get takeaways once a week and completely stopped it around October. They just weren't worth the money anymore. Sometimes I'll grab a coffee if ds falls asleep in his buggy and sit in a cafe but that's only a few times a month. Usually I'd just drink coffee at home.

So probably 15 pounds a month...

Unless we're travelling as then we'll obviously get McDonald's and coffees then!

Toddlerteaplease · 17/02/2025 13:50

Yep. Every day off I will have a latter and two teas in a coffee shop. I have a coffee machine for work days. As work costs costs a mint.

CeeJay81 · 17/02/2025 13:57

Monthly about £110 to £120

Food at work(could be a sandwhich meal deal or a reduced price ready meal, both with staff discount) £50

Coffee out: £15

Montly Take Away - £30-£40

Occasional lunch out £15

That does include my Lunch or dinner 5 days a week at work though. If it's school holidays, may treat the kids to an extra treat aswell.

DancingNotDrowning · 17/02/2025 14:12

I don’t get takeaway coffee ever but always get a delivery on Friday night if we’re not out. Usually about £100 for 4 of us.

I grab lunch the days I’m in the office this probably 10/12 pcm costing about £150

so probably about £450pcm

i eat out a lot but haven’t include that.

Gingerisgoodforyou · 17/02/2025 20:04

Takeaways not at all as don't think they're very healthy and not that fussed about them.

Provably spend about 5-8£ a week on 2 coffees sitting in somewhere/ at work.

Maybe eat out with family once a month on average, about £60-80, and maybe lunch with friends once too.

So average monthly total about £100 - £120 altogether. £1200 -1300 year seems a lot, but probably worth it in the pleasure it brings.

callingyouhomebirdie · 17/02/2025 20:21

Im amazed at how disciplined people are and that a lot of people don't get takeaway. Super impressive in my eyes. So the question is do you buy something special from the super market to cook at the weekend or is it just what ever is there?

My dp is a shit cook and I think that's the problem if it was shared I'd be happy enough but I do all the cooking and INHATE thinking of what to make so it's just handier

Last takeaway I got cost me £30 and was actually vile.

Just get some nice supermarket ready meals. Or I buy a bag of stir fry noodles, veg and some prawns/pre diced chicken. Takes five minutes to stir fry it all together and buy a bag of prawn crackers to go with it

BigBoysDontCry · 17/02/2025 20:47

I don't mind getting a nice ready meal sometimes, it's not a hone cooked meal but cheaper than a takeaway.

At the weekend I'll usually do something like a curry or stir fry on Friday and maybe get a couple on nice steaks for a Saturday or even just decent burgers and do caramelised onions or brie and cranberry or something to make then a bit fancy. Sunday I'll either do a roast or a one pot dish like a chicken and chorizo risotto or something. Or maybe something normal but homemade like salmon fishcakes or a quiche. Summer might be a salad with some fancy bits added, like salmon or prawn Marie rose.

I think you need to get your partner cooking something, even if it is something quite easy but tasty, like a nice pasta or an oven baked risotto is easy peasy.

TheChosenTwo · 17/02/2025 20:53

My personal spend on takeaways is now zero, pre mounjaro it was probably £200 a month (one a week when dh is at football I’m left in charge of cooking but I hate it so much I outsourced it 😂).

Now it’s more like once a fortnight if dh and ds have been out all day and back late he’ll order in but I don’t eat it.

Coffee takeouts is also zero as I don’t drink tea or coffee and never have done.
However I did spend £600 last month on eating out 😂 it’s one of my main ways of socialising, dinner with friends. Plus I also took a couple of people out for birthday dinners (my treat). And dd came with me a few times for dinners and lunches out.

mindutopia · 17/02/2025 20:59

No 😂 almost never have a takeaway coffee (I’ll bring my own because I’m cheap). Also almost never have a takeaway as I think they’re a bit shite. Dc both had birthdays this past month and requested a takeaway. Probably spent £100 for 2 nights of takeaway (family of 4) and very unlikely to have another in the next 6 months.

When I was in my 20s (and made so much less money!) I got coffees and takeaways and meals out all the time. Dh and I used to go to the pub 4-5 nights a week when we moved into our first little place together. We laugh now at all the money we must have blown (yet we had to buy a mattress for £299 ON FINANCE at Dreams! 🤣).

Runnersandtoms · 17/02/2025 21:05

I spend £3-4 on a coffee in a café once a week. Almost never get takeaway, maybe once or twice a year fish and chips. Eat out at Itsu/Wagamamas/mcdonald's/pizza express when we go to London, probably once a month or so.

Ariela · 17/02/2025 21:24

We have fish and chips about once a month, pizza a couple of times a year, and the odd bacon bap or burger when out all day, but to be fair my ready meals one I cooked double of and froze) are easier than a takeaway as we have to drive some distance (nobody delivers, too far out).
Never takeaway tea or coffee, always take a Thermos mug. Or two!

Boope · 17/02/2025 21:44

One reason I don't buy takeaway is that I live in a village and it would be a 40min round trip to get one. No delivery.
I do often do something a bit special on a weekend though. Such as some decent fillet steaks which cost about £12 for two, or home made pizza.

IAmNeverThePerson · 17/02/2025 21:50

Takeout? £30 every other month. Don’t get take out coffees.

I don't need to be disciplined at all as I prefer our cooking any day to takeaways. Sort of cook nicer dinners at weekend as have more time so make curries and proper home made pizza and coleslaw for example.

CharlotteCChapel · 17/02/2025 22:03

Can't remember last time we we had a takeaway and I only get a coffee if I'm near a Wetherspoon and need the loo.

ritasuebobtoo · 17/02/2025 22:06

I spend loads in coffee shops. But I like it and don’t want to scrimp on something I enjoy every day.

Fordian · 17/02/2025 22:45

I'd eat out far more if it was a lovely experience, but it so isn't, so often!

RobinEllacotStrike · 18/02/2025 08:33

Zero.

I've had a couple of coffees in cafes this year.

We have takeaway about 4 times a year.

They've never held much appeal and now if I don't fancy cooking my kids are old enough to fend for themselves.

Badbadbunny · 18/02/2025 09:44

Fordian · 17/02/2025 22:45

Our thoughts too! Customer service is crap these days and quality of food/drinks is very variable, even in the same places.

We have a lovely chippie in our village. Used to be really popular and top ratings of trip advisor, nearly always busy. It hasn't changed ownership, but the owners have bought another choppie so now have staff running it. The standards have nose dived. Grumpy/grunty serving staff, food can be cold or over cooked, and prices have at least doubled over the last few years (yes, because of inflation etc but still!). Now it's all low Trip advisor ratings and seldom anyone in, certainly not the queues there used to be.

I just don't get why the owners have allowed it to go downhill so much. If they've lost interest and preferred their other one, why not just sell the first. As it is, it's probably worth a fraction of what it used to be as sales, ratings etc have all gone down.
