I have just calculated that I spent £300 on takeout and Starbucks last month. Unbelievable. I'm definitely reeling it in. What's the average in your house ? I do think we eat out far too much

I'm scared to think tbh. I don't have much energy to cook so I do get delivery maybe twice a week. Then I have also taken a shine to a local coffee shop which I now can't walk past without getting a cappuccino. I'll be broke for a month or so soon so that'll all get knocked on the head.

rainbowstardrops · 17/02/2025 12:39

We only tend to have takeaways on special occasions like birthdays/special dates, so maybe £50ish each time?
Very rarely go out for meals. Might do so instead of the celebratory takeaway.
I meet up with friends for a coffee and cake about once every 6/8 weeks, so again, not much.
My H is self employed and I don't think he even likes me, let alone loves me, so it's usually me and my two adult kids. I don't mind cooking for them largely.
I spend too much on wine though. Need something to look forward to lol

Titasaducksarse · 17/02/2025 12:40

We will go out for a coffee now as have both stopped drinking alcohol..but still only once a week.
I can't remember when I last had a takeaway...partner has fish and chips once a week.
So between us ...£20 a week maybe

changedusernameforthis1 · 17/02/2025 12:40

Usually about £180 for us and the kids to get a takeout every Saturday, which is a bit of a bad habit we've got into doing.
An extra £40 or so to go out for brunch and coffee a couple of times just me and DW.

But in fairness we really enjoy the treats so I don't regret it all that much.

No takeaways as I live alone

Why "as you alone"? I'd be getting takeway every night if it was just me!!!

That's sad. Is there any end in sight?

geresever · 17/02/2025 12:44

I almost never buy takeaway coffee - maybe twice a year ehen I feel obligated because I'm meeting someone in a coffee shop. But I won't buy one just because I'm early, for example, and decide to kill time in a coffee shop. I'd rather sit in a park for free.

Takeaway meals we do as a family about 6 times a year. I find them poor value for money, but it's a treat. When we go out at weekends or during the holidays with dcs, we always make a packed lunch. They're quite fussy, so it often feels a waste to spend money on takeaways if they don't eat much.

We quite well off financially (dcs in private school, own a house in an inner London borough) so it's not because we can't afford it. But it's not where we choose to spend money. We save and invest a large proportion of income and I get more satisfaction out of that.

FastFinch · 17/02/2025 12:44

0, I just can’t afford to, the cost of takeaways in my area is ridiculous especially as they tend to be shit, I keep some pizzas and fries in the freezer for when I’m craving takeaway style stuff.

GroovyChick87 · 17/02/2025 12:45

We get takeaway at least once a week so minimum £30 and the kids get a McDonalds which brings it up to about £65. Sometimes I just get them sausage and chips from the local chippy as it works out loads cheaper and they enjoy that just as much.

Enko · 17/02/2025 12:45

We spend a fair bit I am not tallying it up as happy not in the know. 😀

Mostly coffees or sandwiches in the amazing Italian deli by my work. Rare we have an actual take away but wheb we do it's almost always t burger from an amazing burger place so is over £50 for 3

ManchesterLu · 17/02/2025 12:46

Me and DP used to spend so much on takeaways. We actually worked it out and it shocked me so much that we've barely had any since.

I love not having to cook, and having nice things to eat, however we just can't carry on given the money we actually have to spare each month.

ChanelBoucle · 17/02/2025 12:47

Pretty much £0. We have a good bean to cup coffee machine and the only time we buy coffee is on the odd road trip or social meet ups. I have very rarely just bought a coffee for the sake of it. We rarely eat takeaways either. It’s probably a blessing that we’re in a Deliveroo-free area, so we have to actually leave the house to go and get one, but they make me feel really shit the next day so I’d rather buy something nice from Waitrose.

We probably eat out once or twice a month so must spend at least £200 on that.

pinkroses79 · 17/02/2025 12:47

Barely anything, sometimes a quick lunch costing around £15 in the city at the weekend, but rarely more than once or twice a month. Never takeaway coffees, I don't see the point. Occasionally get a takeaway but less than once a month. Got a takeaway last week using Deliveroo and it was cold, like the time before, so probably won't do that again!

WaltzingWaters · 17/02/2025 12:50

I never really get takeaways besides the very occasional fish and chips a couple times a year. 1. Because I live in the sticks where there’s no takeaway delivery options, so paying loads to go out and pick up food seems more of a faff than just making food. 2. it’s so expensive and as I enjoy cooking I don’t see the point. I do enjoy going out to a pub/restaurant to eat, we probably do this on average once a month.

Luckily I don’t like coffee so that saves me from that temptation! Just the occasional hot chocolate in winter.

BigBoysDontCry · 17/02/2025 12:55

I get one takeaway a month for my (adult) son and I so maybe about £25. Might eat out once also so maybe another £50.

Im probably about £500 a month on groceries though which I think would be higher than average. To be honest I generally prefer home cooked food to takeaway.

61here · 17/02/2025 12:56

Don't have takeaways or take out coffee...But....
we go out for lunch at least once a week
go for evening meal out 1 -2 tines a week
Out for morning coffee about twice a week. I would hate to add up how much we spend, we are retired and determined to enjoy life whilst we can!

Meadowfinch · 17/02/2025 12:57

No. nothing. I hardly ever go out for a coffee. partly because of the price but also because I don't like overly strong coffee and some of the brews I've been served at £3.50 a cup have been like diesel. 😩

I have my own coffee and coffee pot in work.

We don't have takeaways either, there aren't any that deliver to us. The joys of rural living.

User19876536484 · 17/02/2025 12:57

I spent precisely zero on takeaway food and coffee in the last month.

Hatcoat · 17/02/2025 13:01

Way too much on takeaways, I dread to think, Don't go to coffee shops etc as we don't drink coffee. We had a £50 curry takeaway last weekend for 2a1teen. A complete waste of money as we sat with it on our laps. I don't want to see a takeaway again for several months. Total waste of money.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 17/02/2025 13:02

I'm on £80k and don't feel we can afford takeaways or coffee anymore. I don't even buy lunch.
I don't buy anything joyous anymore.... no money (which is insane...)

Jobdilemmaz · 17/02/2025 13:04

Prob around 30ish quid a week on cafe stuff (coffees, snacks), then we get a takeaway max twice a month at around 30-40 quid a time. Used to be more like once a week but most takeaways are shite these days so we stick to the very few we know will be decent.

We barely go out drinking or buy alcohol in our weekly shop. So while we could cut back on the cafe spending, this is basically our social life at the moment what with two small kids, so I don't think it's too bad.

salemcooper · 17/02/2025 13:04

£100 for us for the two of us. We don't mind because we like our little treats!

rainbowstardrops · 17/02/2025 13:08

That's sad. Is there any end in sight?

Unfortunately not @BigDahliaFan
He went self-employed years ago (against my advice) because he wanted to be there for the kid's milestones. Which was great for him but the rest of the 'drudge' was left to me! I love my kids fiercely, so I'm not upset about that in itself. It just built resentment in me.
Fast forward and I have several health issues that are being investigated and I am in lots of pain and am unable to work because of them right now.
Anyway, don't want to derail the thread and don't want to out myself!!!
But this thread is enlightening because I might treat me and the kids more often now!!

confusedlots · 17/02/2025 13:10

We would get a takeaway around once a month. I do also sometimes but the M&S or Tesco Chinese/Indian box for 2 on a Saturday night when I don't fancy cooking, which is much cheaper than a takeaway, around £10 I think.

Takeaway coffee maybe once or twice a month if we happen to be out somewhere and I fancy one. I do love my coffee though, but take my own coffee in a travel mug into work every day.

I probably spend too much on wine though, that's where I need to cut down!

Asuitablecat · 17/02/2025 13:14

Holidays and high days. Usually pizza if we do, because I've realised I don't actually like the Chinese food takeaways do and ds doesn't like Indian. So probably 40quid about 3 times a year.

In work I usually take my own, but will occasionally treat myself from something from the school canteen. Even though 'treat' and 'school canteen' are contradictory.
