I have just calculated that I spent £300 on takeout and Starbucks last month. Unbelievable. I'm definitely reeling it in. What's the average in your house ? I do think we eat out far too much

We don't spend much on takeaways, we get a curry maybe three times a year which is between £50 and £100 depending on how many are eating, plus the odd pizza or burger box delivery for the kids if DH and I are going out or if we've had a long day out.
DH gets coffees and lunches regularly but they're on expenses.

We do however spend loads on eating out. Over the past seven days we've eaten out 8 times between us, Sunday lunch, pub dinner with friends, DH took DC1 out for dinner, we've had two shopping trips out and have eaten while out, I had lunch with a friend once and lunch with my Mum once, and had brunch with DC1 and 2.

Twice a week DC3 has a training session after school where there's not enough time to go home beforehand. So we meet in a cafe. I bring his kit and take his school stuff and we have a drink and he has a snack. This costs about £30 a week more if DC4 joins us.

£40-50 on takeaways a month and prob around £20 on coffee. My office canteen they are only £2 so not so bad.

Crushed23 · 17/02/2025 11:41

I spend around $200 a month on takeout coffee. I have one every morning. I don't feel any guilt - I love coffee and can afford it.

I haven't ordered takeout food in about 3 months (prefer to cook if eating at home), but I do buy lunch at work 4 days a week, and eat out a few times a week. Again, no guilt / can afford it.

I'm not rich but I have no kids so probably have more disposable income than the average person my age.

PoachedCloud · 17/02/2025 11:42

No takeaways, we occasionally have a ready meal to save time cooking. Coffees out are £1 a mug £2 for home made cake at local church once a month, and Wetherspoons bottomless hot drinks twice a month.

Shoxfordian · 17/02/2025 11:44

We spend 50ish a weekend on two takeaways, so maybe 200ish a month. I spend about 80 a month on lunch and coffee on my days in the office, dh probably the same. We eat out most weeks, anywhere from 100-200 a time.

curious79 · 17/02/2025 11:49

no coffees etc, takeaways rare, but do eat out every week

AltitudeCheck · 17/02/2025 11:52

Rarely a takeaway as limited options here, we're more likely to pick up a 'posh' pizza from the supermarket and open a bottle of wine at home. Maybe an actual takeaway once every few months which would be £25.

I might have a coffee out (or as a takeaway) once a week on average, less since I've discovered coffee bags and got a nice travel mug for the car.

OH drinks too much and easily spends £10+ a day on popping in for a beer (two) after work or while out on a weekend bike ride. We have separate finances so I don't know the full extent!

TubeScreamer · 17/02/2025 11:56

Takeaways £40 every couple of months (1 takeaway for 3 people).

TwinkleLights24 · 17/02/2025 11:56

I probably spend £20-£30 maximum per month on takeaway items. Sometimes £0.

I never buy hot drinks while out and coffee shops aren’t my thing.

WFHforevermore · 17/02/2025 11:58

Takeaways, as in ordering cooked food, probs £250/300 a month.

Ordering quick dinners and alcohol, separate to the "big food shop" £300 a month.

Coffees/work stuff £120. DH takes coffee from home now.

crossstitchingnana · 17/02/2025 12:01

Jesus! I probably have 3 or 4 takeaway coffees a month. Had a takeaway last week, first in months.

Normallynumb · 17/02/2025 12:01

Nothing now. I actually begrudge paying £4+ for a cup of mediocre coffee now
I used to almost daily as it was a chance for a quick sit down( disabled)
I take a travel mug with me now. At least it's hot when I want it

Normallynumb · 17/02/2025 12:02

No takeaways as I live alone

ClockingOffers · 17/02/2025 12:02

Coffee out once a week meeting friends in a local hotel for a chat. I sell my fresh eggs to the friends, so it balances out the price of the coffees.

Takeaway about once every 2-3 months on average. Either Chinese or fish and chips. We live rurally so far fewer options.

Actual meals out - about twice a year for same reasons as above, excluding when on holiday.

Bjorkdidit · 17/02/2025 12:07

I don't think comparing costs is useful because everyone has different priorities and budgets.

But it's good to be aware of the cost and how small spends can add up to a huge amount over time. £300 pm is £3600 per year, which would pay for a holiday or likely over £40k in a decade including interest, which is a very decent new car or a house deposit.

So if you think your money isn't going very far or wonder why you can't afford X, Y or Z or have no savings, it's definitely worth thinking about whether you should cut down the amount you spend on these things.

cheseandme · 17/02/2025 12:07

I have never bought a takeaway hot drink but I have lunch out meeting up with friends approximately once a week so probably spend about £200 a month on eating out.

PerambulationFrustration · 17/02/2025 12:08

Coffees maybe twice a month meeting friends. Never buy cakes. Might take dc for hot choc and cake once a month £30
Takeaway once a fortnight so around £100
Other meals out with friends £60
Dh around £80 a month on his days going to work.
Probably not far off what you're spending op.

BigDahliaFan · 17/02/2025 12:10

Takeaways - once in a blue moon. They are rubbish where we live. We'll go to a cafe usually at the weekend for lunch and a drink. We'll stop in a tea shop twice a month.

We eat out about once a week on average - sometimes more.

But I hardly ever buy a take out tea or coffee unless I'm away somewhere.

Maydaylight · 17/02/2025 12:14

I never get takeaway coffee, and it's pretty seldom we get a takeaway -- I can't remember the last time we did either, come to think of it.

PrincessOfPreschool · 17/02/2025 12:17

Occasionally a Greggs or McD with the kids or a Dominos about once a month. I reckon about 50.00 a month max. Household income is 100k but we are careful with it.

AQuickDeathInTexas · 17/02/2025 12:20

Almost nothing. We very rarely have takeaways, maybe once a year.
About every month or so we might go in a cafe for coffee and cake but not a chain cafe and we never buy takeaway drinks.

ThePoshUns · 17/02/2025 12:23

Hardly anything on takeaways as am more likely to eat out, and don't like coffee much.
At home I tend to cook so my grocery bill is big.

MissyB1 · 17/02/2025 12:23

We literally never have takeaways, we don't like them. I do love a coffee out, but I restrict it to one a week, so maybe £20 a month?

letslaughitoff · 17/02/2025 12:29

Nothing on take away food as i dont like the taste of any of it.
And about £20 a month on coffees.

Lovelysummerdays · 17/02/2025 12:33

I get a £7.50 lunch allowance from work so that times however many days I’m on. I think coffee is on expensive these days I can’t bring myself to buy one out my own pocket. I think after all deductions I average £8 an hour. I’m not working for half an hour just to pay for a latte. You can make one at home for about 50p. I have a little Turkish espresso pot and a milk frother.
