Just making a deal without Ukraine ? Is this not really fucked up? I'm worrying more than I ever have about the world. I think Europe need to tell them to fuck off

trump's jokes about canada are not funny and although the country seems far away the economic warfare at any moment could draw the king and the uk into the mix being a commonwealth nation and the king our sovereign.

mommyfinger · 16/02/2025 20:08

Scary times. Munich 1938 anyone ?

@sleepwouldbenice no one thinks it's a joke at this point. the first comment maybe but it's gone beyond that.

So not sure how much truth to this there is but we need to all at least appear to be on the same page right now.

@mommyfinger looks like most who attended the meeting agree with the need to “arm up” increase military and defense spending. I guess that sector will see a good few years. Except are young people interested in joining the military? 77% of American youth are too unfit to qualify.

Huckyfell · 17/02/2025 15:43

The whole thing is an awful situation and Ukraine are fighting a war they can't win. If Trump can stop the war by whatever means then he deserves some credit. I detest the way putin bombs innocent folks to bits, I do believe the only way to stop the war is giving in to some of his demands. I don't agree with giving a sovereign country's land away at all, but we need some form of resolution otherwise the war will just keep on until the inevitable surrender. I really hate putin, evil man.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 17/02/2025 15:45

It is really fucked up but I'm not really sure what Europe can do about it.

We can choose appeasement and hope that it doesn't encourage Putin to further expand the Russian empire by marching into other European countries.

Or we can choose to oppose it in the full knowledge that we don't stand a chance without the US because Europe hasn't invested sufficiently in its own defence for decades.

We really are between a rock and a hard place. And of course, the UK has chosen to isolate itself from the rest of the EU at just the point in our history when we probably need those alliances most.

Dressinggown08 · 17/02/2025 15:45

I am also surprised by the lack of posts on this, but I think many of us are frozen in shock and disbelief by it all. Trump has completely given away any negotiating power by making concessions to Russia without anything in return- honestly what was he thinking? Although perhaps Putin has made promises which we're not privy to, as they involve ransacking Ukraine's natural resources. Can't believe the cheek of them referring to Trump as leader of the free world..... whilst threatening to annex Canada and Greenland whilst an unelected billionaire closes down any structures which place checks and balances on his own company and rifles through personal and sensitive information belonging to the American public. What a time to be alive.

Trump isn't joking about Canada.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 17/02/2025 15:46

I sort of agree, although I'd never give any credit to Trump. Also, we have so many financial problems at home, do we really want to spend masses on arms? I don't.

I imagine very, very few men & women are willing to die for this country anymore. U cant destroy women's rights & belittle men 4 a decade & expect them 2 die 4 Ukraine. Lol. I'm not sure what Keir is thinking really...Conscription is both unlikely and would be met with significant opposition.

He has said they will be peace keeping forces after the war has been concluded.

We have to anyway
Trump says European countries need to pay more for defence. Its the one thing I agree with. And given his recent behaviour and promises he's not going to prioritise Europe then we need to, as we xant trust the US

This may stop the war in it's current form, but Putin is not a reasonable man. He will be emboldened further (if that's even possible) and invade Ukraine again, perhaps even Finland and other adjacent countries. He must be rubbing his hands with glee at current events

But throwing Ukraine under the bus isn't the answer. Giving putin what he wants is just the start. As I said yesterday, we've been here before in Munich 1938 giving hitler what he wanted. Look where that ended up.

Also I see Isreal has just taken a shipment of USA bombs? Looks like trump will be getting gaza for his resort afterall!

GildedRage · 17/02/2025 16:04

UAE and Quatar have approached the world bank to rebuild Gaza.
Maybe Trumps crazy approach is getting leaders off their butts on multiple issues.
I’m surprised to learn Panama is taking USA illegal immigrants and detaining people until repatriated to their own country. Looks like Panama caved.

Teaandapple · 17/02/2025 16:09

I get the impression that Trump really does just want this war over and giving Putin the land he’s won already is the quickest way to get the fighting to stop. Job done - except of course it isn’t because we can’t trust Putin to stick with what’s agreed. He’s going to want to take more land for Russia and if he knows the US won’t fight him on this then at some point he’s going to invade somewhere again. Surely Trump can see this? I am hoping that by saying the US won’t be giving any more support to defend Ukraine Trump is just trying to force Europe to step up their own defence and then he’ll relent a bit. (A bit like he did when he said he was imposing 25 per cent tariffs for Canada and Mexico, but then when they made some of the concessions he wanted, eg Mexico sending troops to the border, he didn’t impose the tariffs after all.)

There's something called the European Trading Bloc, it means that members of the EU can freely trade and prevent competing economies from imposing their goods, including food on us. The EU also has certain standards that products have to have.

European army. The members of the EU could have their equivalent of NATO instead of relying on the US.

At the moment the UK is by itself and would last six months against an invasion. I imagine we'd last longer if we had the aid of other countries. We're currently in NATO but the US has gone rogue.

We have nuclear weapons for a reason. And there is no better reason than invasion!

pinkhousesarebest · 17/02/2025 16:23

I too am surprised to see so little attention given to this. Fiddling while Rome burns comes to mind. If I was a Baltic country I would be so worried.

dayoffvibes · 17/02/2025 16:28

Agree. To those naively saying "well at least if Trump stops the war that's a good thing" - no. He's planning to strip Ukraine of its precious minerals, plus oil and gas - in fact Zelensky told reporters Trump wanted a 50% stake in it all moving forward as "repayment" for the previous support from the US (under Biden) and with zero guarantees of any future support. This is COLONIALISM!!!

Any ceasefire will be used to Putin to regroup and get ready to finish the job before moving into Moldova / Poland.

We are in dark times indeed. Trump is actually worse than Putin.

Nuclear weapons are used as a deterrent unless you're mad.
