Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

Those cabinets are so domineering. Could you reconfigure them to be less boxy, perhaps remove the doors and have shelves?

I don’t think you’ll ever like the room with that sofa in it. Could you consider selling it?

I’d get rid of the wallpaper and put up some art and have some plants.

There's no way I would do black walls . I know i have the black sofas and white unit. But black walls would really depress me same reason for low lighting it would depress me . I know lots of people see it as cosy . But its really depressing for me.

The things I say no to are either not practical for me. Or would make me feel depressed.

I do appreciate people's idea though 😊

I wasn’t suggesting that you paint the walls black! Just that you embrace a largely black and white palette. Most of the examples in that article have white walls. It could look good with your plants and maybe another neutral eg wood or metallic accessories. You could find lots more examples of monochrome interiors by Googling if none of those examples appeal.

No i can't get rid of the sofa I'm still paying for it .

I could possibly remove the top of the white unit i will have a think . I'm not removing shelves though. I will end up with a shell that i can't do anything with .

Forgot to say. Wallpaper is being removed now and doing white undercoat then paint the colour in the next day or so

I think you should paint the walls, put the units back and the sofa how you decide to have them THEN take photos and begin to look at accessories. Don’t do the final touches until you're happy with the foundation imo.

Oh OP I just found this thread and I'm cheering you on!
I remember your older threads and I think you are amazing, you are so determined to turn your house into a home, you just keep on going.
For what it's worth I was going to suggest sage green if nobody else had already! It will look good behind the black sofa but won't be dark. I think it will make the sofa look ten times better too.
Definitely don't worry about finishing touches until you've painted the walls and got the sofa and white unit how you want them.

Thank you so much 💐. Yes I'm going sage green some one suggested it a few days back so I'm going with that and playing about with things a bit 😊

Have you looked at Dunelm for rugs OP? They do some lovely colourful ones which are washable and not expensive at all. That might help to lift the room a bit with the sage green walls as well.

Floralnomad · 20/02/2025 18:32

Totally agree with pp about Dunelm for rugs , I always get mine from them . Something like this maybe
https://www.dunelm.com/product/sage-smudge-rug-1000194809
We have their Antalya ones downstairs and they spot wash well .

I really can't get motivated as all.. just not feeling it. Removing the wallpaper but forgot to get scrappers ffs so a simple thing is taking longer than it needs to. Kids are doing it at the moment . I'm sitting on my lazy but to see what I can get Way with before they get bored.

Be kind to yourself - you didn't get much sleep last night!

I know. I kept thinking about my sofas so I couldn't sleep 😅

I have painted 2 walls white and have finished for the night. I normally carry on till late but it felt a bit crap today. I'm just going to sit and moan I'm bored now . And look at rugs and stuff 😅

I don’t think you should get rid of bits of the white unit - just put some pretty things in the glass-fronted cupboards. Sage green candles or vases, or books, or standing photo frames (black ones to stand out against the white and go with the sofa). Make sure everything you pick you really like so that when you look at them it makes you happy. You don’t need to do this all at once, or spend much at all.

I love the idea of sage green walls and I think it will be lovely when it’s done. I also really like the suggestion of black curtain poles and white curtains, and putting your fancy mirror up somewhere.

The last thing I’d do would be to look at it when you’ve got everything else together and then decide if you want any pictures on the walls.

I will do that . Others have suggested baskets for the unit to set it of and as you say ad things to it to make it feel homely and personal.

I am doing the sage green walls and I will do the black curtain pole . I need to think about the curtains though. I can't do white though. Possibly a light ish colour.

I'm not sure where ti out the mirror . Decide when it's all done i guess .

I want new light as well . I will look for one but get someone in to do that for me as I don't know what I'm doing.

Colourful rug. Swap radiator for a vertical colourful one too - love the vivid orange colour you can get.

Where is the coffee table?

If the media unit is staying, make it properly in built with skirting and coving. Or replace with shelves where you can add more personality and colour.

I'm in council . So i can't do anything with the radiator. Would better like you say though.

I don't know how i would add skirting to it . I would have to add small legs or i won't be able to open the drawers . Or since it already sits on the floor maybe I could do something with the sides and the top.

I'm.not having a coffee table . Looking at small end tables for the ends of the sofa though
