Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

I was looking at this paint is that sage green ? I'm not sure it is . If i write sage green it doesn't come up .

I was also looking at that panelling I thought it might add something to the wall . I don't know if I would do it to one wall or all walls . Or if i will it at all.

I'm hoping to go to b&q early evening today to get paint.

To me, sage green has more grey/brown tones but there is no real definition of colours, it’s subjective (ignoring Pantone colours, for the pedants 😂). You’ll find a whole range of different shades of green described as sage green by different manufacturers.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s sage green, what matters is whether you like it!

KnickerFolder · 21/02/2025 12:52

FWIW this is Pantone sage green:

Yeah I agree . But im pissed of myself for not realising what it was I even have it in my bedroom and it still didn't register. I think its to dark for the whole room. I think it worked in my room because I left the top half white .

As you say regardless of what the colour is called I just need to find one I like.

Was hoping to get at least the paint done this weekend don't think I will though.

Thank you . I think that's definitely to dark for the whole room. Explains why teen ds and his friends were implying 🤮 😅

Get a crap load of sage green testers. Different brands, some a bit lighter and some a bit darker, some a bit greener, some a bit duller. If you don't want to paint on it the wall directly then paint them onto big bits of paper of card and pin them up.
Give yourself time to see how they work in the space at different times of day and with different lighting. You must have so much natural light in that room so it'll behave very differently than in say a box room with a tiny window.
The unit taking up one wall and all the windows taking up another mean you're really only going to have two walls with a lot of colour on, and you've already discussed a mirror and pictures for those. Whatever colour you use isn't going to feel as 'whole room' as you might be thinking.
Learn from the sofa and don't don't rush getting a colour up and it potentially being the wrong one.

Viveladonut · 21/02/2025 13:48

I've attached some images on how I'd do the room to embrace the black sofa:

  • use a tonal colour palette, where the black will just look like another tone that goes with the whole palette. I like the taupes and browns of the one I attached, it also looks quite sophisticated.
  • if you like gold, use it sparingly in the above kind of colour scheme. Too much might look a bit garish.
  • embrace soft furnishings - layered curtains from ceiling to floor, lamps (in additional to a main pendant light), a large and neutral rug.
  • remove the top and sides of the media unit so you just have the units below the TV, and paint them in a colour that matches the tone of the rest of the room.

Yes, I would get few testers different brands and descriptions Not too many as that's confusing because they look different depending on the light in the room. Sage green would be lovely and doesn't matter about green bedroom
Different as I live in a tiny flat, but kitchen/ lounge and wetroom are painted dulux polished pebble throughout but looks different in the wetroom as no windows.

Viveladonut · 21/02/2025 13:53

Can you use a less blue-toned light bulb? It might look less stark with a warmer light on it.

Viveladonut · 21/02/2025 13:55

Here are two rooms, one cooler toned and one warmer toned.

If you're worried about a dirty rug, look for one made of polypropylene, as it's scrubbable.
Even a garden rug( for patios) as they're waterproof( and cheap)

Normallynumb · 21/02/2025 14:00

Just an example this one is waterproof from Amazon

I'm.not sure on the test pots thing. I agree with what you say it makes 100% sense. But I don't drive so I have to bus to b&q then back again fuff about with colour etc . Them go back again. Its going to take alot of my time up.

Feel like im back to stage 1 again 😔

Aww you're not back to square one at all, you've done so well
It's a lot of decisions in a short time as you want to pull it together.
Please don't be down on yourself
Are you happy to order online for delivery? Even delivery costs would be similar to bus fare.

B&Q do online orders for delivery. I think Dulux do too. I'd really, really recommend spending a bit more time getting the colour right. You deserve a room you love and if you just pick a random colour and slap it up you risk it being meh, or even something you actually dislike once it's done.
You aren't at square 1 at all but don't rush it, end up with something you don't love and want to redo, because then you would be.

I would rather get it in store because I feel like im wasting days waiting on delivery. Logically there's no rush. But the younger kids are going to their dad's in a couple of hours and back Sunday and I associate them being away with getting stuff done . I'm not worried about completeing the room . But I would like to get the paint done. Don't know if I actually will though

Totally agree. Im just impatient. The living room feels do much harder than the bedrooms

I would start here, then look at lighter/ darker as you want

https://www.dulux.co.uk/en/colour-details/tranquil-dawn

Remember that you have white units on one wall, massive windows on another and presumably doors to other rooms. With a white ceiling, you have lots of non wall space. You also have lightish floors.

The wall colour ties everything together. It doesn't have to be dark.

ETA if you swipe through the example photos, one at least is your exact colour scheme (sage walls, black bath and white wood)

Youagain2025 · 21/02/2025 15:24

Could this work ( pic) i was thinking the wood and black colour one behinde the tv within the square shape .

Then the paneling that comes half way up the wall on the other walls?

Honestly, no 😂 It is too many contrasting styles in one room. The panelling doesn’t suit the style of your sofa and cupboards. Also, you need more verticals in the room to balance out the horizontal, dominating sofa. Half panelling is going to be adding another horizontal line that will draw the eye to the sofa. The wood slats (?) could work where the wallpaper is to draw the eye up from the sofa or on the 2 walls where the sofa is to counterbalance the cupboard with something else big and bold.

Are you the poster who made the amazing painted kids bedroom? If so, I can see why you are drawn to the purple diagonal panelling you posted before. That seems like a very you design, if not the colour.

Personally, I would just give the room a white base coat for now to sort the mess from the wallpaper. The room needs some focal points to draw your eye away from the sofa and huge cupboard eg some bold curtains or a large painting/gallery wall behind the sofa or both. The smaller window would also make a good place for a focal point. It looks like you like plants. You could have plants on the windowsill and hanging in the window. The shelves on the TV unit are also crying out for something lovely on them. The wall above the radiator would be another alternative spot for a focal point eg a picture.

I would focus on finding something you love to create a focal point above the sofa and on the wall that you first see when you enter the room. Then choose a colour based on that or stick with white. Don’t paint the room then try to find things you love to match the paint. Look at rugs, curtains, paintings, gallery wall ideas for your photos, plants, wallpaper, panelling and find something you really love that makes you feel happy to be a focal point for the room. Then pick your paint inspired by that.

The wallpaper has gone ... the sofas are now going to be 2 separate like this : see pic so I'm not sure if 1st paragraph is relevant?

Yes I did the colour kids room . I would do something simlar in my living room but I knlw i can't 😭. I said ti the kids maybe i could do something similar in the hall /landing they don't me more to be a prick . Not in them words.

The trouble with putting panels behind the white unit is it might stop it from sitting properly against the wall. I think if that wall is painted sage green it will look really good in that opening. By the time you've got the TV up there won't be much showing anyway, so don't make extra work for yourself. Same with the panels, you've got most of your walls covered with sofa, cupboard and patio doors. Not worth adding panels.
