Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

Not read the full thread, but a Ruggable rug might work here as it’s washable and would stand the footfall from the garden. Not cheap though.

Justasmallgless · 17/02/2025 21:55

What about something like this behind your TV? With lights as well to keep it bright??

The only thing with wicker baskets is that they can become dust collectors or a place just to shove things in and you said before you had had help in decluttering.

Gold with the green and black would look fab

Do you mean to have that behinde my tv to fit within the unit i already have ?

Baskets would not get full of crap. The 3 large drawers are full of crap . And the rest is practically empty.

@Youagain2025 yes to fit behind the TV

Is the sort of thing you were thinking with the picture you shared?

Yes and no. I showed the picture to show the type of panel I was talking about. But it does not have to be with the TV. But im also possibly OK with it. Just thinking of ideas really .

It would add texture to that wall with the unit.
You could do a wall elsewhere. Why don't you paint the walls in your chosen colour and see how you like it.

If you are going off the green (although it's a lovely colour and calming) what about a sandstone pink or back to the gold

TethersMiddle · 17/02/2025 23:02

Youagain2025 · 17/02/2025 21:06

I don't like simple 😅 I'm not bothered about different colours in different rooms kind of want that. It feels boring to keep it simple

I don’t mean a simple finish. I mean a simple start IYSWIM. Get the basics that you are happy with, then build up from there.

I will probably do sage green still . I can make sure its different to my bedroom. Plus I'm doing something different so it will probably be ok.

Fantastic start! I love your dog btw 😍

hockityponktas · 18/02/2025 07:09

i think break it down into small steps instead of making all the decisions now?
Get the rest of the wall paper off and then choose a colour to paint it, see where you are after that?
I think baskets and plants will soften the look of the big unit and the paneling behind the tv too.
one step at a time though! A rug too but needs to be practical with kids and dogs.
cant wait to see the end result😊

Yeah I will do that . I'm going to paint the room white first

I'm not sure if i should go to b&q and get the paint from there. Meaning can start later today . But im not very strong and I can't carry 5l paint . So I would have to take a sack trolly on the bus. With push chairs and shopping trollys on buses I'm not sure i want to do that.

Or I can get it delivered via amazon . That would be tomorrow but could be at 10pm that's then 2 days wasted

Why are you painting the room white first though?

And people have said it’s better to wait so you can have the windows open to help with the paint smell, but you’re wanting to do it today?

Isn’t this how you ended up with a sofa and cupboard you’re not in love with, because you jumped into making quick decisions?

I don't have to wait till spring at all. The smell of paint is not overly strong. Also I can still have my windows open a bit.

Tje reading for the white is when I paint over it with the sage green . It will be the exact colour it shows on the tin.

With the rushing I'm just doing the white for now then I have the blank canvas.

I don't have any photos of my kids on my walls. So I'm going to get some sorted. I'm not sure how to do it though. Do I just put recent-couple years old ones up. Or baby/toddler ones . Do I do several for each child to see them grow. Do I hang some in the living room and the hall maybe? Just the living room or just the hall

I'm not sure how to fit them in with what I'm doing to the living room

OP posts:
PinkArt · 18/02/2025 18:36

I'd start with either your fave group shot of them or fave individual of each in frames in the cabinet. Black frames to tone in with the sofa or something that contrasts nicely with the sage green once that's up - orange perhaps.
I'd hold fire putting any on the walls yet until you've seen what the paint looks like.

Maydaylight · 18/02/2025 18:41

Yes, I was trying to think of a politer way to phrase this to the OP, who seems to have made some decisions in home decor she's not happy with later on...

@Youagain2025 Honestly, while there are no 'rules' about how to display photos of your children in your house, many people keep them in upright frames on table tops or on shelves (as in your TV unit's empty shelves) or clustered in the hall or on the stairs, because photos can look awfully tiny and swamped on big walls and just not look that aesthetically pleasing. If you have a big, bare wall, you either need lots of framed photos, or to print up high-resolution prints quite big, which can be expensive.

If you Google 'gallery wall ideas' or 'gallery wall dos and don'ts', you'll see lots of ideas and photos.

Oh yes definitely. Im not putting anything on walls yet . Just thinking. Its going to take me a while to get the photos/sizes etc sorted . But photos will be obe of the last things to go on the wall

I was kind of thinking this didn't know how to word lt . I can definitely put some in the unit . And the hall way . Part of me is debating weather to keep them off the actual living room wall . But it feels horrible saying that. I don't really have any professional type photos. Only 1 . So they are all of my of phone really. I'm sure I have a few nice ones. But not professional type.

Amazon have 23 frames in black that you can print out your own snaps. I wouldn't worry about them not being professional photos . I don't have any in my house but have loads of my family and friends.

Loads of options if you Google and not too expensive either

None of the photos on our walls are professional- all just lovely memories. Places we’ve been, funny moments caught etc.

How have you got on so far?

I haven't done anything yet. Ds wasn't well yesterday so he was on the sofa with blankets. So i couldn't do anything. Adult ds is coming over later so I could possibly ask him to help me the the white unit thing down..

But also wanted to go for a pub meal to celebrate ds passing his degree. Not sure how younger ds is yet though. So not asure that will happen..

Youagain2025 · 19/02/2025 21:58

Had a constructive afternoon 😅. Adult ds helped take the top units down. And both oldest ds took the sofas apart for me. So now I cam play about with them a bit. Ds was helping me look at rugs to but they were nice had some sage green in them but also light colours. I don't think that would work in my house don't think it would stay cleam for long.

I'm playing about with the sofa a bit. Tried this. Used the console as an arm . But then it looks odd . The other sofa as a 2 only has one arm and no end at all.
