Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

The rainbow curtains say "childcare centre". I'd go for something plain. I think you run the risk of too many elements otherwise that are not tying in together.

Nchanged89 · 24/02/2025 17:35

No to rainbow curtains.

Feels like a childcare centre sometimes 😅

If you go for sheer curtains (voiles or muslin) then I'd definitely say go for white, they'll help the colours in the rest of the room pop whereas bright curtains I think will detract and oversaturate.

If the sun comes through the windows in summer though, then I'd definitely consider lined curtains - they're brilliant for temperature control, you can use them to keep the room cool in the height of summer (and we're getting ridiculous heatwaves every year now) and warm in the winter.

It's hard to find lined curtains in white but I'd definitely consider a neutral colour, especially if you're keeping the door wall white (?)

I definitely don't want white with kids and dogs . Lucky if they survive belng put up put up . 😅.

I definitely want some sort of bold /bright colour . Or it's just plain white which doesn't really go with the other walls.

I have a south facing garden so get the sun all day . So i could get lined curtains as well

Plain white has to tie in somehow because you've got the white units.

Sun shines through anything other than black out, so you need to make sure whatever colour is being lit up works with the rest of the room.

For example, I have white light light filtering blinds, but colourful curtains with blackout liners in other rooms

PleaseDontFingerMyPouffe · 24/02/2025 21:45

Fair enough about white with dogs & kids - and I had a feeling you'd say you prefer coloured! 😄

I agree with a pp that you need some white accents somewhere in the room to tie in the units, but they don't need to be big - white picture frames or a white vase would be enough.

I'm confused . The unit wall and the unit itself is white . Plus the window/door wall is white. If I add colour curtains of sone sort surely white is ties in via the unit wall and the window wall at there's quite alot of white 🤔

If I decide to use the voil type curtains I will get lined curtains as well so I can close them when needed in the summer /winter

You said plain white doesn’t go with the other walls. Maybe you meant the plainness, but I meant that the colour white has to go with the other walls.

Found these on Amazon, would give a bit of colour at the window but won't be too much if you have orange curtains too?

I don't know why but in the week on days I don't have overly much to do apart from school runs. I feel like i can't get motivated to carry on with stuff. It feels like I can only do it at weekends. I'm just looking at stuff I need to do and doing nothing about it.

And that's fine. Do it when you feel able to do it.

@Youagain2025, while I absolutely get your urge to put your stamp on your forever home after a lot of moving and feeling temporary, I don't think that the quite stressed headspace you're currently in is a good place to decorate from. You've already made two expensive purchases you aren't happy with but feel compelled to stick with, and I just think that you're likely to compound this by buying curtains, rugs and/or tables in a rush. I also get that you really don't want to experiment with testers because you want it done right now -- but again I think it's worth slowing down for a minute and asking yourself exactly what is going on in your head about this, rather than ending up with a room that stresses you out more because it's unsatisfactory.

Yeah I know . I just annoyed myself because there's no reason for it. I'm basically being lazy.

I'm not stressed. I'm in quite a positive frame of mind at the moment. Have already painted walls now. Everything has started so im not going to stop half way through. If I was stressed I wouldn't be doing it in the first place. Its all about being positive and doing something for me.

What about funky geometric curtains with the orange and blue colours in to pull it all together?

It's a shit hole at the moment because everything is upside down . I will still take one though. Once my kids are not in the living room

She's painted already! She doesn't hang about.

There's also the option of roller blinds, or perhaps a slatted blind which you can adjust to let a little or a lot of light through if you think voiled curtains would get dirty
It's not being lazy to take your time, life happens so don't rush
