Help me with my living room again 😩

Sorry it's me again. So after thinking about doing something with my sofa that's gone out of the window.

But I do want to completely change the living living room. So basically change the walls and the floors, curtains.

My no 's are no dark walls. It has to be light although I will consider a medium sort of colour. Do I just paint or do wallpaper as well? Or maybe some sort of panelling

Floor wise I want to rip the floor up and put something better down. I'm open to the colour and type. I'm also now happy to put a rug down but short pile type.

I'm very against cushions and floor lamp/low light type. As I don't like a room that's dimmed . I like it bright light wise.

I have taken a few pics of the living room so there's a better idea.

I'm hoping to make a start this week.

Of topic sort of. And its going to sound a bit silly. But i have been here for almost 3 years and it still doesn't feel like my home . I mean it's council but I have a life time tenancy. But regardless it should still feel like my home . But it doesn't. I was in temporary accommodation for around 6 years. I did move a few times during that time. But my last temporary I was in for a few years . I don't know if that has any sort of impact.

Also I think where it's a new build there's no character. I swear older house gain their character from the way they are build but also like a feeling from familys that have lived there over time. (I'm probably talking shit) 😅

I think its also the area. I'm still in my original brough but im not in the area that feels like home to me. To be honest I haven't been for over 8 years. I'm not in the position to move/exchange.

I don't know why I wrote that
Think its because I'm hoping decorating will help make it feel like home.

Ah this explains a lot. Why it’s so important to you. Well, go for it, if you like bright colours etc just go for it. Like you have. Make it your home, the way you want it. I’m inspired by you, and I have convinced my DH today to paint our white living room in a dark sage.
I used one of those visualizer apps and he said of course straight away. You actually have given me confidence to do it, so what if we have to paint it over again. If you can, I can.

Vitriolinsanity · 23/02/2025 19:19

It mostly lacks texture, if you had some draping plants in the unit, you could tie in some pistachio cushions/throws on the sofa and a green/cream rug on the floor which would draw everything round the edge more centrally. If you lost a section of sofa you could have an end table with a lamp.

Vitriolinsanity · 23/02/2025 19:24

And I should have read the thread. Ignore me OP.

I’m sorry you feel like that. I’m sure it will feel more like home once you have put your unique stamp on the house. You’ve done an awesome job so far!

Thank you. Its ok. It's not really a bad feeling just a bit blah. And yeah hopefully it will

🤣 never mind . I'm still thinking on the table ends for the sofa if I decide to leave it split. Someone said i should put it back together because it just looks like i bought an incomplete sofa. I can see their point. So I'm having a think on that.

Put canvas prints into Temu and have a look on there for some ideas. You have done brilliantly
You are probably feeling blah as you are knackered!!!

I have decided that I'm going to leave the window/door wall white. But I'm going to try and find bright /bold colour curtains and blinds.

With the tv wall I'm going to put the unit back and stare at it for a bit

I also think you should put the sofa back together now that it will be up against the coloured walls.

Do you think so ? I will try once the room is finished. To be honest practical wise the extra seat is useful

It takes time to build life afresh elsewhere. I've done it a few times and a couple of years is the earliest somewhere felt like home (except for uni, but that's kind of different).

The home feeling happens once you've made the space your own (as you're doing), built up your routines and memories in the new area, shared some laughter. If I remember rightly, you'd been through some tough times when you moved into this house, and decorating is part of your healing?

I think once you've finished decorating, it'll start feeling like home pretty soon 💛

And character will come with that too :)

You have a direct unflappable, way of writing that's quite refreshing on this website 😊

Don't underestimate how much healing can play a part, and in my experience you don't just wake up one day and find that it suddenly feels like home, it's more of a gradual realisation.

Normallynumb · 23/02/2025 23:42

I get what you mean
I moved into a tiny flat post divorce alone( sons now adults) 9 years ago, and it took me a good few years to adjust and " find my style"
I too have been through shit and it felt I could just " be" here.
Still haven't decorated my bedroom!

Never heard the word unflappable 😬

Yeah I think i have heard something about how your home is can sometimes reflect how things are in your personal life. Something like that may have got it wrong .

Hopefully the home feeling will happen with time

It absolutely can (which is why whenever my mental health dips, my place gets messy).

The home feeling will definitely come 😊

Get yourself a bbq this summer and make some memories - or forget the bbq & just eat your dinner or breakfast with kids outside every summer day.

Hope your OK 💐 it's a massive change to live alone. I hope things are better for you . And you are happier than you were. Im sure your bedroom is fine as long as it works for you that's the important thing .

I have been a massive prick with my garden. Wnen I got my new sofas i partly smashed old one up but its still chunky. And i forced it into my shed. Now I'm scared to open it and try to get lt out . To get rid of it properly. And I'm scared of sheds so I don't want to open it. And because of that it means I'm dumping stuff in corners up the end of the garden etc . I would really like to get rid of the shed and buy a big one that has double door that opens widely so it doesn't feel horrible and dark .

I don't have bbq i may get one. I have a new garden table that I haven't taken out of the box . I Need new chairs. I have a massive pool we get out in the summer kids love that .when it's the warm long nights we have some music on in the garden . Play song quize

I'm so sorry / angry for whatever has happened to make you feel so afraid of dark sheds. It seems like you're doing amazingly!

Could you ask your adult son to take the bits of old sofa out of the shed? (I don't know if any of your other children are old enough to help)

KnickerFolder · 24/02/2025 17:22

Do you want plain voiles? If you don’t need them for privacy, they just cut out light. I would go for patterned curtains that can be used to keep in the heat, personally.

I definitely like the idea of some sort of window covering. Having either curtains, or possibly roller blinds, that you can close when it's dark outside makes the room feel much cosier and less exposed in the evenings.

Even if you always keep them open, curtains hanging down the sides of the windows make the room feel softer somehow.
And the thin, gauzy type you have picked out here can be nice to close if we get one of those few summer days which are just too hot! So you still get some daylight shining through them, but less glare.

So yeah, the rainbow curtains could be nice. Or possibly white ones of the same type. Or that type but all one colour. Maybe yellow? Or lime green?
