Lighthearted - What’s the most (stereotypically) middle class thing you’ve done/said recently?

I’ve just re-waxed my Barbour jacket…

What about you?

Ooh, I'm not sure about some of what I'm reading here though. I may be an organic food crank (pollinators!), but anyone who comes to do work in my house or garden gets the same tea, coffee, mugs and biscuits that we use ourselves!

I have one fave mug, which I don’t like anyone else using. All of the other mugs are free for all though!

This thread puts me in mind of so many lines from Frasier!
I recently heard one of my favourites again. Niles Crane, reflecting on his financial hardship due to divorce proceedings:
It's been so bad, this week when I went to the cheese shop for their "Around the World" platter, they cut me off at Luxembourg.

Craftycorvid · 13/02/2025 22:38

I once observed a mum in the supermarket wine section as she enquired of her baffled-looking child - roughly 8 and in school uniform - ‘which do you think, darling? Pinot or Sauvingnon?’

I’ve been (justly) mocked for discussing the prevention of scratches on my Belfast sink.

I’m grateful for the re-waxing tips! I have a Toast waxed coat that could do with re-proofing. 😂

Craftycorvid · 13/02/2025 22:38

Gah, sauvignon!

Hollyhedge · 13/02/2025 22:41

The new Waterstones is really exciting

Crispynoodle · 13/02/2025 22:42

Not me but my youngest daughter (27) let slip that her boyfriend and her are planning on buying their first property and can get a mortgage of 1/2 a million! (😱😱😱)

Perseimmion · 13/02/2025 22:43

Booked tickets for the opera.

Crispynoodle · 13/02/2025 22:43

Ha! I forgot! My DGS's first words were 'brioche please'

Proseccoagain · 13/02/2025 22:43

Does having a Waitrose delivery today count?

That sounds amazing! Alpen is delicious. Do you put powdered milk in? I think that is what I like best about it.

I do - it's definitely the secret to the taste - and I don't even want to talk about the amount of time I spent searching for an organic brand before accepting that there was no such thing 🙄

The recipe I use, which I found somewhere on the internet posted by someone who loves muesli as much as you and I obviously do, is:

170g oats
170g toasted wheat flakes (got to be toasted, and don't be tempted to use Bran Flakes, they're not the same)
100g dried fruit (raisins are classic but I also like chopped dates)
270g chopped nuts of your choice, toasted and cooled
powdered milk to taste (recipe says 22g but I think that's too much)

I used to make granola, but the cost of the maple syrup threatened to bankrupt us

Not be but my rather lovely and very middle class neighbour. We live in a middle class area but most of our neighbours I would guess have always been middle class, we grew up very working class.

She always brings leftover veg for our 8 guinea pigs which we are very grateful for. Answered the door to her the other day 'ooh hello now then do you know if your guinea pigs like pak Choi??'

I had to fess up and tell her I didn't know what it was......it turns out they loved it though!

My guineas are also treated to oak choi.

We also go to our local farm type shop for out fruit and veg and my DD was sure to stock on the nice carrots for the dog and the guinea pigs 🤣

Is pak choi the same as Chinese leaf? I am never quite sure and am always on the lookout for new food to excite the piggy tastebuds

Discussing a closed down rather grim cafe at a meet up but we both agreed it's good that it's apparently going to be a Gail's

I came to this thread to find out what class I'd be if I lived in a class-y area. I definitely wouldn't be middle class! Does that mean I would be working class? Or is there anything in between them?

If you have to work, you're working class.

I paid for my dog to have acupuncture 😬

Did it work?

Crikeyalmighty · 13/02/2025 22:56

Talking of overhearing conversations many many moons ago when we lived in Crouch End I walked past a mum talking to a toddler around 3 and saying 'we really aren't communicating well mungo' - still makes me laugh when I think about it now

Thanks for the recipe, sounds good. How much powdered milk would you reckon?

My sister overheard a mum saying to a toddler in Cambridge "I think you'll find that I've been more than accommodating, Barnaby" and though it was years ago, it still makes me laugh every time I think about it.

That reminds me of my DS. He came out of school one day and said 'Mummy I've got a new friend called Ben and I'd like to invite him home for tea one day. Could you write his mum a note to arrange it and I'll give it to him, if you think that would be appropriate.'

He was seven. My face was like 😮WTF child?

ParksidePen · 13/02/2025 22:57

"Ooh a Pannetone!" said my three year old daughter at Christmas.

I probably put in 2 flat teaspoons? Basically I want everything to be coated (especially if I'm using dates as otherwise they just clump together) but I noticed the first couple of times I did it that there was loads of milk powder just at the bottom of the bowl no matter how much I stirred it.

Pottingup · 13/02/2025 23:01

Still remind DS who is now 15 and thinks he’s very street that he walked into Gregg’s age 7 and said loudly ‘Do they sell sushi in here?’

I think they are slightly different but still good for the piggies

Also now remembering that my kid quite often asks for "lightly boiled broccoli" if she's given a choice of veg
