Lighthearted - What’s the most (stereotypically) middle class thing you’ve done/said recently?

I’ve just re-waxed my Barbour jacket…

What about you?

My Labrador’s food is homemade. This week it’s chicken and liver from Ocado, lentils, rice and leftover veg from the farmer’s market. The next three day’s supply is currently cooking in the Aga in a Le Creuset casserole.

I love my dog 🤷‍♀️

Are you me? This was my life between Christmas and New Year. My local Waitrose has only just restocked but it is the one in the ceramic dish not the one that is already halved. It is nowhere near as strong!

I have literally just returned from Waitrose aghast because there were no sweet potatoes. Settled for butternut squash.

Working class. Grew up in a council house.

Ha that was literally me just before NYE! In the thick of the 3rd trimester with our second and became somewhat obsessed with finding it. DH suggested substituting with Camembert but I was having none of it 😂We now have 3 of the sodding large ceramic dishes…hoping their cheese counter gets the usual version back in stock soon.

wholetthefroggiesout · 13/02/2025 20:03

Ah, I was expecting this thread to be “working class” people sharing things that made them feel “middle class” so was excited to share that today I bought Heinz beans instead of own-brand and Lurpak instead of Danpak. I’ll leave now.

That’s not middle class, it’s normal practice. My horsey friends vary from one who is very rich indeed through a couple of middle class people to majority who are very much working class.
Any assumption of class based on having a horse/horses is hugely mistaken.
Maybe it is in London though or other places which are more land poor?
Here in the New Forest pretty much everyone and their dog has horses and we happily snaffle up (pun intended) cut price apples be it from Waitrose, Tesco or even dare I say it Asda for our beloved equines.

So nice to see the New Forest mentioned as someone who was born and bred here ☺️

I also know plenty of people with horses! As you said, one of them is a multi-millionaire and another works a part-time Band 2 admin job at a hospital!

I have special (not very special at all, £2 from Sainsburys on sale) mugs for said workmen. Last time we had builders, I realised all we had to offer was Wedgwood coffee mugs and I’ll be buggered if I let them use those in all their mess and chaos.

Wow! The trades working for us enjoy the best brazillian blend made with the sage coffee machine. They blooming well deserve it!
The wankiest thread indeed

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/02/2025 20:24

Talked about the quality of the monkfish we'd got from Ocado

My cleaner has a horse.

Something about "budget airlines" as I just booked my first easyJet flight

Mumofmarauders · 13/02/2025 14:12

My sister overheard a mum saying to a toddler in Cambridge "I think you'll find that I've been more than accommodating, Barnaby" and though it was years ago, it still makes me laugh every time I think about it.

@Mumofmarauders wins this thread for me. I wonder what Barnaby and his Mother are doing now- perhaps he's busy designing a new form of egg-topper while she scours Cambridge for a really rigorous piano teacher for him. I hope she's been able to return to professional life- those Public Inquiries won't Chair themselves.

EmeraldDreams73 · 13/02/2025 21:17

Bloody hell. I have never felt poorer or lower class after reading all these!

No not those blueberries sweetie they’re not organic (to my 4yr old, I wanted to swallow the words back up)

This could be me, yes

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/02/2025 21:46

Toss up between knowing the location of the four nearest Waitroses, being able to say which one is most likely to have stock of a ridiculously expensive evoo that's my favourite/not hearing myself explaining this to a Consultant that's been coming into work for a couple of months - and referring to the caretakers cleaning equipment as 'Dave's Archimedean Broom'.

Or, seeing as I'm just about dragged up from the gutter these days, I was just being a fucking wanker.

Made my own muesli including freeze-dried strawberries and blueberries, puffed quinoa and chia seeds.

I can top this. I love Alpen no added sugar muesli, but I'm also obsessed with buying organic food so I make my own Alpen copycat, as close to the original as possible, with organic ingredients.

I honestly want to die just reading this back, but also I have no intention of stopping.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 13/02/2025 22:07

Ooh, I'm not sure about some of what I'm reading here though. I may be an organic food crank (pollinators!), but anyone who comes to do work in my house or garden gets the same tea, coffee, mugs and biscuits that we use ourselves!

I have a classics degree too. The ships were tiresome in Greek, let alone English! Fully team your daughter here!

And the sulking in the tent!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/02/2025 22:16

I absolutely hate the idea of having special inferior coffee for tradesmen. Seems really rude.
And it’s 2025 ffs. We can all go on holiday to Italy or go to independent coffee shops or buy an espresso machine. Nice coffee isn’t some special elite thing you have to be a C1 or above to appreciate.

Not using the best Wedgwood or your favourite mug you would hate to get broken for someone who’s working outside or with mucky fingers or lying on the bathroom floor surrounded by tools on the other hand is surely common sense!

TokyoSushi · 13/02/2025 22:19

Bought some lobster bisque in Waitrose

Bought our ski passes for next week

ILiedToJimmyNail · 13/02/2025 22:20

@NormaNormalPants ahhhhhh totally irrelevant to the discussion, but I love tartifliette... Once drove home from France with a full wheel of roublechon in the boot, mid summer and my whole family complained about the smell the whole way home!

That sounds amazing! Alpen is delicious. Do you put powdered milk in? I think that is what I like best about it.

@twistyizzy On this occasion no, I seem to recall a hand knitted olive green cardigan though! There was a family from Hebden that used to come into the library I worked at with their children - Mordecai, Orion and Hepzibah...

My friend had to mention in local village primary school that new pupil Hero would turn out to be a girl...they weren't entirely sure.

Catsfrontbum · 13/02/2025 22:27

Took the kids to Salcombe some years ago and Dd (3) said- mama why are all the children called “daaaarrling”

All you could hear on the beach and streets were Hugo’s and Jocastas calling after their mini me’s.

HaagenYAAS · 13/02/2025 22:30

I said to my husband “We simply cannot expect people to eat a piece of cake without a cake fork, after stroking the horses!”
We then both burst out laughing at how ridiculous I sounded!

Conversation with friends about middle age aches and pains -
"My wrists as so weak now that I can hardly lift my Le Crueset".

This is brilliant! Thank you for making me laugh on this gloomy grey day 😄

Got a jar of instant coffee in the back of the cupboard but it's only for workmen/women (decorator/ plumber etc)

Goodness me, I wouldn't be seen dead buying instant coffee, let alone serve it to the staff! No, that simply Will Not Do.
