Lighthearted - What’s the most (stereotypically) middle class thing you’ve done/said recently?

I’ve just re-waxed my Barbour jacket…

What about you?

I'm in a class of my own... I have no idea what I'm doing

Strawberrysparkle123 · 16/02/2025 08:21

My son’s A-level economics teacher recently did a ‘what is middle-class’ quiz with them. My son was voted the most middle class because we had chia seeds, more than one type of mustard and bonne maman jam! To be fair I think there are more middle class kids in the class than him but it made us chuckle over our homemade beef wellington that weekend 😂

I have to tell the staff in Aldi that the 20 cans of sardines are for my dog and that I'm not a mono-food wierdo

I have to tell the newsagent every time that the Daily Mail I’m buying is for my dad.

To Doctor friend ‘my daughter has burnt her bottom sitting on the aga. Do you think I need to take her to A and E?’

I’ve burnt SO many things on Agas over the years… bedding (using the lids as an iron) and rather spectacularly my ex’s favourite and very expensive coat. And spent many hours sitting on the lids reading. But never managed to burn my bum… too much padding obviously 😂

Whenever I shop at Aldi or Lidl, I always take my M&S and Waitrose bags.

You are not alone; I always take my Abu Dhabi Carrefour and LuLu bags 🤪

Not what I said exactly, but we had guests over a few nights ago which is quite rare for us, and I realised we didn't have enough glasses for everyone.
I could have bought an extra glass, but they wouldn't have matched so I bought a whole new set to accommodate one extra person.

Although I did come out with "Oh no. They've substituted our nice ham with the cheap stuff again" on Monday 😂

Fuck me. The last person who had wine in my house drank it out a jam jar 😁

Ooh that’s defo working class.

boredsolicitor · 16/02/2025 08:59

@NormaNormalPants you can make tartlflette with Brie - it works well. Roblochon is hard to find in my Waitrose too- never seems to be in stock and then I'm secretly relieved because it's about £12!

Got a jar of instant coffee in the back of the cupboard but it's only for workmen/women (decorator/ plumber etc)

Me too. Was most put out last year when one of the scaffolders demanded real coffee on their arrival . Then the same one asked if I had a pain killer and pocketed the entire packet. Though spitting nails, I was secretly crowing that the CF didn't realise that all the coffees he demanded were in fact decaffeinated

ifionlyhadacat · 16/02/2025 09:38

To continue my above post (couldn't edit)
Though, to be honest, I usually give a choice of real or granules to any tradespeople who comes. This one was just a CF

Barney16 · 16/02/2025 09:39

DS asking a waitress for carbonated water. To be fair he was quite small and dyslexic and couldn't find another word.

So you offered him real coffee and he accepted? That's not the same as him "demanding " real coffee, is it?

ifionlyhadacat · 16/02/2025 09:51

I didn't get the chance to offer. As soon as he leapt out of the lorry he demanded a big mug of real coffee

Ah I see, sorry, your 2nd post suggested you gave him a choice and were miffed that he chose the real coffee!

I've just spent the afternoon making handmade tortellini filled with pheasant in a creamy white wine and Parmesan filling. Then I restocked the logs for the burner and took the Gundogs out in my Land Rover, wearing a schoffel gilet and a pair of le chameau wellies.

I shit you not 😂 my life is a complete stereotype!

That tortellini sounds amazing!

OrlandointheWilderness · 16/02/2025 10:10

To be fair @Newtrix it was bloody lovely! 😂 dud it on crispy kale with purple sprouting, with some chilli oil and Parmesan on the top and homemade garlic bread.
Fuck ton of work but yummy!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 16/02/2025 11:09

Wealthy friend to her 17 year old DD who has a gap year job at Couttes:

Darling, you need to be more firm with your father. You'll need the skills when firing people.

Then picked up our conversation where we'd left off as DD went out to meet said DF.

Yes, I've told all my poorer friends and family this, so may be outing 😅.

I'm WC but my neighbours are mostly MC and I laugh at these, and them.

On the local forum a bloke wrote, "Basically anywhere South of Forest Hill (London) are the Badlands" and I nearly peed myself laughing.

Edited

Someone will consider 3 neighbourhoods in to be badlands though, and so on.

To be fair, I considered a certain place to be beyond bothering to even go through, until I met my DH who was from there and turns out it's a lovely place with a good mix WC & MC.

I had an idea of the place through tv shows but it's obviously not the whole picture.

Do you have the recipe, please? I love homemade tortellini and I'm always looking for new recipes. I've struggled with getting the water level of the fillings right.

My daughter recently - ‘you didn’t give me the option of business class or the QM2’ 😂

Maddy70 · 16/02/2025 19:48

I told my friend we turned up at the wrong pony show ..

Someone I met via internet dating asked if I wanted decaff or real coffee. When I said 'real', he got out a jar of instant (but caffeinated) coffee. I didn't see him again.

American here..(so no NHS) ,By the time our 3rd DC came along, we were quite poor, and we couldnt afford medical insurance. My Dsis found a bargain basement deal for me. I was able to deliver him at a teaching hospital that only charged an all inclusive small fee for being a guinea pig for the medical students. As I was being wheeled into the delivery room, I loudly called out to my DH to remind the staff that I had paid extra for a private room.I cringed when I realized how spoiled I sounded, but didnt care one bit! it was the best $30 I've ever spent.

Similar problem: I have family members in Spain, and the problem is that the mother is unwilling to accept any change - she wants her life to go on exactly as she likes it. Her health is deteriorating seriously, and her home is unsuitable now - she just isn't safe there. The problem for her sons, one in the UK and one near her in Spain, is trying to persuade her that she will be better off permanently in the lovely care home she is now in for respite care. She is quite determined to return to her own house, and ignores anyone who disagrees. We don't think it can be done.
How to persuade her to see that things have to change?
