I've never gone line-by-line before in my bank statement before

Just thought you'd all want a nosey 👀

Food: £337.15 (mid week top-ups)

Coffees/cafes: £181.30

Lunches and dinners out: £242.43

DC: £4,550 (this includes school fees broken down to a monthly number, lunches, weekends with DC like Harry Potter world as an example, kids activities like gymnastics etc, paid for by term but broken down to the month)

Beauty: £1301.20 (waxing, Botox, hair colour, etc)

Shopping: £216.39 (new ballet slippers for DC etc)

Misc. £545.27 (things I had no idea what they were on the line item)

Private dental work: £981.63

DH pays rent, bills, running the cars/petrol, insurances, date nights, nights out, holidays, savings, weekly "big shop" and everything else.

I'm probably in the minority and like seeing money diaries and spending habits but from all walks of life and not just high earners/spenders.

DancingNotDrowning · 13/02/2025 12:35

@Lentilweaver I’m going to add my twopence here. I work in a high paying industry, everyone earns well and all of the women “look after” themselves.

we all have Botox, blow drys and manicures. There are regular discussions around PTs, use of fillers and other tweaks.

it’s not that I want to look young, but I do want to look good and the bar is high because everyone is cheating nature in some way or another.

She doesn't intend to buy.

They aren't UK citizens so will return to their home country at some point.

It's not a case of not being able to afford to buy.

Yes but presumably they will need somewhere to live when they do leave the UK. Just the moving to go abroad is an expensive undertaking. Having a pot of money planning for future intentions is only sensible

What's the point of your post?

I don't think you're reading the room

What a boring useless thread

DancingNotDrowning · 13/02/2025 12:36

DH looks like he just rolled out of bed most days ( maybe double standards for women)

and it’s definitely double standards for women - especially for those of us over 40 🤨

More like a boring useless comment from you.
It’s ridiculous the vitriol being directed at the OP.

I say good luck to the OP, why shouldn’t she spend and enjoy the money that she and her DH earn. We live in a capitalist society so there is no need for all this bitterness and jealousy from other posters.
And if it is relevant, I don’t earn a huge amount myself but I don’t begrudge others who do.

£181 on coffees?!

£181 / 30 = £6, that's 1, max 2 coffees a day, esp.if she drinks smth like oatmilk match latte.

How much do you earn

Ok everyone I get it now.

Apparently the wrong forum to post these kind of things but many posters said they enjoy watching similar on TikTok etc so different social media platforms for different things!

MN used to be different. I loved having a nosey of what people got up to.

It’s just a stealth brag though isn’t it?

It’s so irrelevant and tone deaf. People are struggling to get food on the table and heat their homes and you think it’s a bit of fun to show how you can spend nearly £200 a month on coffee.

Obviously it’s not a race to the bottom, but surely it’s not in the best interest of the majority of the UK public to read something like this.

Yeah, MN is a very different platform than TikTok. Your list of what you spent put me in mind of those insane beauty overconsumption videos that seem to be popular over there atm for some reason I can't fathom. So much waste, it's depressing. And regardless of what's being said on here by some pps, I am also going to make the point that you don't mention giving anything to charity, because you can afford to and I honestly think you ought to. Some people are going to disagree with me and that's fine, I stand by it. A post listing what someone spent in a month, by its very nature, throws itself open to judgement on what is spent.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/02/2025 12:42

MeanderingGently · 13/02/2025 09:24

But are you happy and content?

I'm a pensioner. I also rent. I have slightly enhanced state pension which works out to £1060 per month, for everything. I live on less than you spend on beauty!
I'm not in the slightest bit envious as I consider myself to have a lovely life that suits me....but can't imagine being so unhappy with my appearance that I need to spend that much just on beauty enhancing alone!!

@MeanderingGently There was a thread the other day about the state pension and whether it would be sustainable for future generations. Just wondering if you pay your rent out of that £1060 as curious as there can't be much left over after rent?

Throwingpots · 13/02/2025 12:43

What a thoughtless, boring, and totally unnecessary post.

goingdownfighting · 13/02/2025 12:44

I'm not sure why you've posted your spends, but you can obviously afford it so carry on.

You are probably one of the few that's propping up the uk economy and paying taxes. Unfortunately that's frowned upon here by a lot of people.

If you can please try and buy locally and ethically where you can and tip good service well.

It is interesting, I wish I had that sort of money- I'd spend like you if I had it haha.

It can be a bit hard to read if like me you have no money left for the month and are living on pound bits from iceland until child benefit haha but that's not your fault and we all watch celebs with their crazy lifestyles :)

Normallynumb · 13/02/2025 12:52

Well you know the saying Beauty is only skin deep
Your pockets on the other hand
You say you have money, but you have no idea of values... and I'll repeat you work in finances!
I'd rather struggle on my disability benefits.
My DS works in finances

God that sounds hellish. Glad to be working in an industry where no one gives two shits about what I look like after reading this!

Notsuchafattynow · 13/02/2025 12:54

I found it eye opening. I love those magazine articles that would breakdown spending.

Do I earn what the OP earns? No!

Am I jealous? No, because I'm a grown up who realises there are people more wealthy than me on the world.

Christ, someone's got to get the economy going!

Flatulence · 13/02/2025 12:57

£1300 on waxing, botox and hair colouring? My God. I thought I spent a lot on beauty 🤣 .

Just to echo others, humble bragging about your ~£8k take home is very tone deaf. I'm pleased for you that you earn very well but girl, read the room.

Maybe a lot of people are commenting out of surprise and not jealousy. If you don't have a wide circle of people that you know then some people won't have any clue of the kind of income and lifestyle that some people have. It's a different world to them. I personally posted that the beauty spending is nearly my monthly takehome not because I'm jealous but because it's so preposterous and comment-worthy, the wealth divide in this country.

I'm in an unusual situation in that I have a lot of savings (inheritance) and will be able to retire early but currently do a very low-paid job and work very hard for very little money, for something I really believe in for its inherent value to society (public sector, education). So i cut my cloth according to my income and therefore know the value of things, and the kind of income and lifestyle my colleagues' have. Conversely I also have experience of some very wealthy people and so know the wealth that is out there and the kind of lifestyle that brings you.

However, it absolutely blows my mind that people can be so crass as to start a thread like this on a forum which is formed of a whole plethora of people in different income brackets. OP, why didn't you go on Reddit on one of the HENRY threads?

Well done for keeping the economy going !
From an old mumsnetter who is now very good, out of necessity, at making a medium sized chicken cover 8 adult meals and has never had a beauty treatment in her life.
Hope you have a good pension OP.
