Peter Kay should he handle hecklers better?

Doloresparton · 11/02/2025 20:55

Apparently Peter Kay had 3 hecklers removed from his show on Saturday night.
One man, who was with his ds, kept shouting garlic bread.
The woman that was removed shouted I love you Peter Kay.

Should a renowned comedian handle hecklers with more wit or should ?drunk hecklers be thrown out.

I listened to Peter Kay reading his autobiography and he said that in real life he's really shy and the person on stage cracking jokes isn't actually him, but a kind of persona. The real Peter is watching him in wonder from the wings. Its must be overwhelming at times people wanting autographs and stuff when he's not 'on'.
That might be why some people have found in standoffish IRL too.

Edited

Yeah I understand that, but they shouldn’t have said give us privacy and we’ll stay for a minute at the end to say hello to staff. It may have been Peter’s staff rather than him but either way it put me off.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 12/02/2025 10:33

@falkandknife That's totally fair enough and I'm not trying to change your opinion. I think what makes me uncomfortable in this social media age is that some people seem to feel if they like someone famous then they have a right of access to them. They don't always seem to realise that they buy a ticket, someone puts them on a show and that is the extent of it.

Saw him live last July. It was the funniest live comic show I have ever seen, and worth every penny. Mind I’m Northern born and fully understand his humour.

All for drunks being thrown out👍

Locally he isn’t well liked I believe. Stand offish and up himself.

Anyone spoiling the show for others should be removed

Does that include anyone dancing at concerts and blocking views?

Maddy70 · 12/02/2025 12:14

No because that's expected and encouraged by the artists she was disruptive a lot and Interrupting the lines ...

crankytoes · 12/02/2025 12:23

@falkandknife you know what? They may have just forgotten. Or all got a bit tiddly and not even thought about it in that state. Or feeling overwhelmed. Or a bunch of things that really take priority

And you could be absolutely spot on but it’s still tarnished the love from me

FoxtonFoxton · 12/02/2025 13:11

I've seen comments on his instagram statement from people in the audience who had the misfortune of sitting near these hecklers. The lady in question had a prolonged and loud argument with a man in front of her and was annoying for most of the show. She didn't just shout out one thing. The bloke was obviously hammered and incredibly irritating too - it wasn't like he shouted out once. They were ruining the show for other people and I think it's great they were removed and actually told they were twats. Nobody wants to pay for a show and listen to obnoxious drinks screaming unfunny comments throughout. It being a Peter Kay show and if people like him or not really has absolutely nothing to do with it. I'd hope any artist/show/concert would remove pissheads ruining things for others and if they get told off and embarrassed that's on them. Don't act like a twat and it won't be a problem.

SoapySponge · 12/02/2025 13:18

If you read the report (& see the vids on line) this went way beyond "heckling" and I thought he dealt with the situation (& the subsequent press questions) very well indeed.

As he said, the majority of people there had paid good money to see a show without interruptions.

SoapySponge · 12/02/2025 13:19

Doloresparton · 11/02/2025 21:26

Barry Humphries would have made mincemeat of any hecklers.

These weren't hecklers. They were a couple of twats causing a disturbance.

Poppymeldrum · 12/02/2025 13:24

I've just been talking about this with dp and then found this thread

There is a time and a place for this shite-sometimes having a sing along/dance is fine-its expected

This gig,its not-laughing is expected but not yelling all the way through

She was trying to get a chant going-in the middle of the performance-it isn't the right time nor place

Yelling 'garlic bread' all the way through isn't funny either

If I've paid a lot of my hard earned money to go see a gig,I don't want some pissed up twat screaming 'garlic bread' or some silly cow making a show of herself

Whoever said that if the comment about looking like Lisa Riley was aimed at someone else, this lady would have roared with laughter was bang on (I admire the lovely lisa-she seems to give zero fucks)

The fact they got thrown out and went running to the media with sad faces must mean they have zero self awareness about their own behaviour-they couldn't be any more in the wrong

They did the heckling, they take the getting chucked out

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/02/2025 13:35

Guy should have tried that at a Jerry Sadowitz gig - he'd soon be begging to be thrown out.

HobnobsChoice · 12/02/2025 15:41

I don't think Kay was especially nasty to the woman. He did suggest that the fella should be dragged out though. Which wasn't friendly but he wasn't really advocating for the man to be given a kicking.
Richard Herring many years ago dealt with a heckler throughout his show and at one point told him to kill himself. He'd dealt with him quite competently and wittily until that point but this guy was so pissed he was incoherent and then just shouting bollocks like a Sixth former at Reading festival. It was seriously irritating. There's a recording of it here and I don't think anyone would suggest Herring can't handle a heckler or he hasn't paid his dues on the circuit.

I watched the (illicit) video taken of this on YouTube. I agree with this piece in the Guardian, that removing hecklers is not the issue. Off course they shouldn’t be able to remain if they are ruining the show for other audience members. The issue is the unprofessional nasty relish he showed whilst getting it done.

That's shocking.
Peter Kay comes over as pathetic tbh in that clip.
Fair do's throw them out but his monologue over the top was irritating.

Although Peter was right to have him removed, I’ve never found the garlic bread thing funny at all!

murasaki · 11/02/2025 22:55

I've seen Jimmy Carr twice and he's good at hecklers, but then his hecklers were better.

This was basic bitch level, i have one catch phrase.

I'm amused that the woman is offended by being compared to Lisa Riley, and Lisa has no shits to give, well done her. She did look like her and has chosen to focus on the weight which wasn't the point. Well done Lisa Riley, classy.

I know Lisa Riley lost something like 12 stone and to this day articles go on about her tremendous weight loss and surgery for excess skin, but fail to mention she appears to have put most of it back on again, unless she’s wearing a fat suit!

FoxtonFoxton · 12/02/2025 17:06

I think I'd struggle to be overly kind to people who had been a massive pain in the arse since the start of the show. Everyone has their limits. Imagine trying to do your job and someone interrupting you constantly. You lose your train of thought, it ruins your content, your audience is being disturbed and getting pissed off. It wasn't even heckling he could respond to or interact with; it was drunken dickheads shouting out rubbish. If you go to a show and ruin it for everyone else then you deserve to be totally embarrassed and take a bit of shit from the artist. Perhaps it will make them think twice about doing it in the future. They obviously don't feel much shame sadly as they were straight to the papers trying to make a quick buck. I wouldn't think PK gives the remotest shit about his "cuddly" image -he has more than enough money to give up tomorrow and never do a days work ever again. Has he even got a "cuddly" image? He's notoriously private and the rest is acting. I don't even think the clip is that bad, he very clearly isn't expecting or wanting "Keith" to kick anyone's head in. He wasn't going to stand in silence for 5 minutes while they were evicted.

Mh67 · 12/02/2025 17:16

Thrown out you pay to see/hear the show not listen to some idiot shouting out

StillCreatingAName · 12/02/2025 17:23

Come on OP, if you weren’t at the show, why are you bothered? This is literally nothing of concern to anyone who wasn’t there. Switch off the big light and go do something more interesting instead…

garlictwist · 12/02/2025 17:24

I went to see Kevin Bridges years ago. It was a huge treat for us as we went down to London, got a hotel and made a weekend of it and we were not well off. The show was a bit late starting so by the time he came on some people were really drunk. His set was ruined by drunk people heckling what they thought were funny additions. KB just got more and more annoyed and then ended the show early as a result.

So I agree - if people are spoiling a show that other people have paid to see and want to enjoy, they should be removed.

Noodles1234 · 12/02/2025 17:24

I’ve been smto some comedy shows and the hecklers have been really awful, not just the odd shout, it was constant and ruined the performance. If it was just a one off shout they wouldn’t have been removed. They must have been a real nuisance. Yes get rid as the rest want to enjoy the show and those tickets aren’t cheap!

TheresNoPiccalilliInThisJar · 12/02/2025 17:24

I suppose it's not really the same but a few of us went to see Dirty Dancing at The Winter Gardens in Blackpool on a Saturday night so some rowdiness was to be expected but there were 2 women responding to everything the main characters said and screaming the next line ahead of time. Anyway a brawl broke out because people got extremely pissed off and an elderly lady smacked one of them around the back of her head while telling her to STFU. 😆

I agree. DH and I went to a huge arena show last year and a lot of people were absolutely hammered. Not just a bit pissed; drunk to the level of not being able to stand up properly and being an absolute pain to everyone around. Multiple people were up and down to the bar during the performance. What was the point of going?! The shouting out around us was dreadful and boring and not remotely funny. It was just tedious. I just don't get the mentality of going to watch a performance and then totally ruining the performance? Getting so drunk you can't even remember it or making an absolute embarrassment out of yourself. Weird.
