Peter Kay should he handle hecklers better?

Doloresparton · 11/02/2025 20:55

Apparently Peter Kay had 3 hecklers removed from his show on Saturday night.
One man, who was with his ds, kept shouting garlic bread.
The woman that was removed shouted I love you Peter Kay.

Should a renowned comedian handle hecklers with more wit or should ?drunk hecklers be thrown out.

I also read that the show was rather risque for Peter Kay, what did you think?

Yeah I would say more so than his other stuff but overall I think it was a funny show slightly too long IMO

SneakyLilNameChange · 11/02/2025 21:30

Not sure if it’s the same show but we got free tickets to Peter Kay’s new tour a few months ago. It was absolutely bloody terrible and I’m so glad I hadn’t paid! He’s the least funny comedian I’ve ever seen live.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 11/02/2025 21:30

I went to see frank skinner recently and this woman was being a right pain and in the end he told her to shut up or she would have to leave. We thought it was part of the show at first

Heckling is good when it’s a clever riposte to the comedians joke. That might add to the experience.

Just shouting nonsense at the comedian doesn’t add any value, probably distracts him, and spoils it for everyone else.

I can imagine exactly what a boozed up Peter Kay audience might be like, and an audience member shouting ‘garlic bread’ repeatedly isn’t exactly adding to the performance is it.

OverthinkingOlive · 11/02/2025 21:35

They are an absolute nuisance and would do my head right in.

Like those idiots who start singing in the West End audience when everyone wants to hear the performance. Just shut the fuck up man.

Girasole02 · 11/02/2025 21:36

I went last year and was disappointed. He was like a Peter Kay tribute act. Lots of old material/ new material that wasn't very funny. I agree that people being a nuisance should be removed but it sounds like he went over the top with his approach. Were a 5 minute rant and personal insults really necessary?

FrippEnos · 11/02/2025 21:37

As someone upthread said.
Peter Kay is more of a performance than a standard stand up comedian. So hecklers will reduce the quality of the show.
But there are lots of comics that like hecklers and putting them down is part of the show.
Then there are other performances (like bottom) where hecklers are either put down or the whole audience incorporated into the show.

NOTANUM · 11/02/2025 21:38

Peter Kay was a bit weird in London when I saw him. The venue was too big for him (O2), was packed full of out of towners who seemed to have come visit for it and the content was only okay.. Some people started leaving towards the end of the last segment and he made a ton of “jokes” about Londoners not having a sense of humour and running to get the last tube. More likely they were heading for trains out of London given the expense of tickets or to party around London.
I hate to say it as I loved Phoenix Nights but he was nowhere near as funny as we expected and doesn’t work in huge venues.

WaitingRoomBoredom · 11/02/2025 21:39

Absolutely right to get rid of people disrupting the show.

I saw Frankie Boyle handle hackers and he was having none of it - they were ridiculed and removed pretty damn fast. I didn't find it funny but I guess it's one way of covering the gap until they are out.

I don't get why people would pay so much for a ticket and then decide not to bother having a good evening.

Gloriousgardener11 · 11/02/2025 21:40

Constant heckling is annoying, rude and inconsiderate to the audience and the artist on stage so yes, they should be removed.

OpalQuartz · 11/02/2025 21:44

It's good he was thrown out. People don't spend money to listen to someone thinking they are hilarious shouting garlic bread constantly.

Doloresparton · 11/02/2025 21:45

I’ve not seen a live comedian since Ken Dodd years ago.
I think Live at the Apollo is good for showcasing new talent.
I love Troy Hawke.

I saw Peter Kay last year and it was a pretty poor performance, like a struggling comic at a holiday camp. It did involve lots of audience participation and he was asking people to call out their favourite jingles from old adverts so there was a lot of shouting going on.

He looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there.

Drfosters · 11/02/2025 21:47

Doloresparton · 11/02/2025 21:05

I think it’s been widely reported so wondered how bad it was.

Jimmy Carr seems to like being heckled.

To a point.

I was at a JC show and a person kept whistling loudly. At first he joked about it and gave back but the guy literally kept loudly whistling continually and was ruining the show.

eventually the guy was removed and everyone cheered as it was very annoying!

supersonicginandtonic · 11/02/2025 21:49

My parents were there. My dad said it was the funniest thing of the second half 😂

The heckling or throwing them out?
Did he not think Peter Kay was funny in the second half?

Luddite26 · 11/02/2025 21:52

He was right to have them removed for the purpose of other people's enjoyment.
It's like when you go to some Elvis impersonators and there is always one woman insisting he gets her knickers you just think get on with the show FFS.

SecondMrsTanqueray · 11/02/2025 21:52

The garlic bread guy was a complete moron. It was absolutely right he was thrown out. How dare people spoil others’ enjoyment of it.

JackJarvisEsq · 11/02/2025 21:52

Wish the nuisance who whistled through a Kevin Bridges show I went to got thrown out.

this particular show was filmed and when I watch it back all I can hear is that tube whistling 😡

SockFluffInTheBath · 11/02/2025 21:53

No, he was fine. I’ve been to comedy sets where hecklers who think they’re funny just ruin it for everyone else. It’s not a participation sport. I haven’t paid £50 to go and listen to funnee Dave chirping in.

skintt · 11/02/2025 21:55

Thing is MN is very law and rule abiding so there will be pulled faces at the idea of not sitting in revered silence throughout a comedy show. However it sounds to me needlessly dramatic. Get them out sure but why tell security to put the lights on him and whatever? Shouting garlic bread is annoying but it isn’t a criminal offence or anything Hmm

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/02/2025 21:55

Hecklers should fuck off. They're no more wanted than the dickheads who keep bellowing out 'PLAY FREE BIRD' and think that it's any way funny or original at a gig.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 11/02/2025 21:55

CallMeFlo · 11/02/2025 21:22

A lot of people who were there last night seem to agree he did the right thing.

I'd be seriously pissed off if I'd spent money and potentially waited a couple of years to see the show and some idiot was spoiling it

The female was so embarrassed and humiliated she's recounted the story to any media outlet that would listen 🙄
Clearly really embarrassed

Yep that made me 🙄 too. Soooo humiliated but perfectly happy to do sad face with the Daily Mail and bang on about how she'll never go and see Peter again. Bet he's gutted.

ETA. From the photo I saw, she does look uncannily like Lisa Riley (who is stunning) so I don't know why she's taking it as such an insult.

Over40Overdating · 11/02/2025 21:56

Peter Kay isn’t a standup in the traditional sense and is famously thin-skinned, so heckling is going to put him off his stride.

Saying that, pissed up fools shouting garlic bread repeatedly because they think they are hilarious and like the attention is going to be tedious for anyone.

Garlic bread man did a piece with the Mail about how ‘traumatising’ the experience was and he ticks every stereotype box you’d imagine a pissed up fool shouting garlic bread at a Peter Kay gig would. Old enough to not be an attention-seeking pisshead with no self awareness, that’s for sure.

madaboutpurple · 11/02/2025 21:57

I love Peter Kay, he has gone up in my estimation. I can't stand drunks anyway and it sounds like they were disruptive.I am sure his event went much better after the drunks were chucked out. Good one Peter.
