Peter Kay should he handle hecklers better?

Doloresparton · 11/02/2025 20:55

Apparently Peter Kay had 3 hecklers removed from his show on Saturday night.
One man, who was with his ds, kept shouting garlic bread.
The woman that was removed shouted I love you Peter Kay.

Should a renowned comedian handle hecklers with more wit or should ?drunk hecklers be thrown out.

I’ve Bill Bailey many times I’ve never seen a heckler he couldn’t handle himself.

This isn't exactly what happened. They disrupted the show repeatedly and it wasn't until the second half that he had them thrown out.

If you're ruining a show for others, out you go.

TheHillsIsLonely · 11/02/2025 22:00

Yes, they should have been thrown out. I feel the same about people holding up phone cameras, sitting on shoulders or with big flags and banners. They spoil it for everyone else.

There’s heckling and there’s heckling. It’s OK for someone in the audience to say something, and the comedian should be able to handle it and turn it into a joke. But then the person in the audience needs to shut up. It’s not their show, and no one has paid to see them. If they won’t be quiet then it’s right to throw them out.

I dint like Peter Kay much as an entertainer. I dont find him in the least bit funny. But if folk were being a nuisance in his show he was right to have them removed.

Stopsnowing · 11/02/2025 22:00

I went to a comedy club in New York that had signs on tables saying three drink limit and no heckling. Witty one off heckling is fine but not drunk disruption

Teenybub · 11/02/2025 22:03

I’ve seen Jack Whitehall twice on the same tour, the first time was hilarious, the second time there were hecklers all the way through and he didn’t get through half of the content because he was just battling the hecklers and I left feeling the show was a waste of time. The majority in the audience wouldn’t have seen him twice so will have probably left thinking he’s crap live and that they’ve wasted their money and then not bother again. I think the odd person shouting out can be funny at set times, but one drunk idiot ruining the show thinking they are the comedian should be thrown out.

ForeverSkys · 11/02/2025 22:04

I saw Peter Kay last year and he wasn't that great to be honest but had every right to remove people if being a pain.

I also Jimmy Carr and he's great with hecklers and there even part of the show and the way he jokes with the heckler is good. In fact I'm going to see him again soon

I think it depends on your comedy. I think he did the right thing. Peter Kay is more of a performance, he doesn't engage with the audience much. People have paid ££££ to be there.

I went to see the pub Landlord years ago and it was a very different vibe.

I was just thinking that Al Murray would be great at handling hecklers. But then again, I doubt whether they'd dare to heckle him in the first place!

Doloresparton · 11/02/2025 22:08

I had a great uncle who used to go to the working men’s club weekly.
He was a dapper man in his suit.
One week he was returning from the toilet when the comedian on the stage singled him out and said.
Look at him all dressed up, I bet he’s on the committee.
My uncle replied.
I'm not on the committee, if I was on the committee I would have booked a comedian.

I think some comedians' acts can work fine with (funny) heckling. For comedians like Jimmy Carr or Frankie Boyle who do a series of more or less unconnected gags then heckling doesn't disrupt the overall flow. But for other comedians who do longer-form, story telling comedy like Stewart Lee or Mark Thomas then it messes up the build-up to the punchlines. Plus it's a very rare heckler who's one tenth as funny as they think they are.

MelainesLaugh · 11/02/2025 22:12

Funny thing is the woman DID look like Lisa Riley! She shouldn’t have been obnoxious to get kicked out then get so upset and go to the papers.

Compo claim perhaps

lifeonmars100 · 11/02/2025 22:14

Slightly off topic but still on the subject of audience behaviour, I and a couple of friends went to a live dance and music production at a concert venue. It was very enjoyable apart from the fact that I had the misfortune to be sitting next to a woman and what I think were her two young adult kids. The three of them yapped loudly almost all the way through and when they weren't talking they were scrolling on their phones. Why? I just don't get it. The tickets weren't cheap, the show was good, yet they they were behaving as if they were in their living room.

I think it’s been widely reported so wondered how bad it was.

Jimmy Carr seems to like being heckled.

Jimmy Carr is on another level of being able to respond to hecklers very quickly. Peter is more of an energetic performer and does not have the same level of quick thinking.

I agree , saw Jimmy Carr last year and going to see him again, different show soon. He handles them very well.

We saw Ricky Gervais last month and this stupid woman kept yelling out constantly, you could tell it pissed him off but it pissed the audience off too and she got told to stfu, by audience members not RG 🤣

Aftergloww · 11/02/2025 22:17

My friend was there and said it felt a bit too harsh but that in all fairness it was annoying.

madamweb · 11/02/2025 22:18

I hate hecklers. I've paid to see the comedian not listen to some jumped up idiot who thinks insults are comedic

Aftergloww · 11/02/2025 22:19

@lifeonmars100 I went to a concert at the Albert Hall and was honestly appalled by the people near me. Constantly on their phones, getting up, in and out coming back with drinks… it was a fairly quiet type of music (José González) and it just felt like they were distracting and disturbing the others.

It wasn’t a single group acting like this, but rather different small groups.

He strikes me as having a fragile ego.

I suspect he’s unwell and hasn’t been in the best of health for quite some time now. He seems very different and I believe time will tell as to his health and disappearance from the public eye a while back.

Dita73 · 11/02/2025 22:24

Whenever there’s a thread on mumsnet asking if anyone has met anyone famous and what were they like,Peter Kay’s name has come up a few times and they all said he was rude and a bit of an arsehole

Sapienza · 11/02/2025 22:25

Drunk hecklers should be removed as they ruin it for everyone else.

Yes, they were right that to throw you out, @Doloresparton

MTP312 · 11/02/2025 22:26

These stupid, loud mouth selfish twonks should be banned permanently from PK performances.

We pay blooming hard earned money to see these comedians/shows. And these idiots think we want to hear them yelling their stupidness??

PK handled it well.

Siriusmuggle · 11/02/2025 22:27

I was there. The reporting is way over blown. He was right to get them thrown out though, they were annoying and probably putting him off. Maybe different if they’d said something funny at an appropriate place but they were just drunk and tedious.

It's a show he does rather than stand up.
